HAMAS GUNMEN SEIZE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE: Masked gunmen have been photographed posing at the desk of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as Hamas consolidated power in Gaza after defeating the rival Fatah faction. Hamas overtook the presidential compound in Gaza City on Friday, throwing large framed photos of late president Yasser Arafat and Abbas to the ground. Photographs taken by journalists in the compound showed one gunman with his foot on a photo of Arafat, the founder of Fatah. Another photo showed three masked gunmen at the president’s desk, with their rifles pointed in the air. Reuters reported that one of the fighters picked up the phone and jokingly pretended to be speaking with the U.S. secretary of state saying: “Hello Condoleezza Rice. You have to deal with me now, there is no Abu Mazen anymore.” Abu Mazen is another name for Abbas, also the Fatah leader. Bloodthirsty Hamas terrorists celebrated their conquest of the Gaza Strip by executing Palestinian rivals, drawing up a death list and declaring a new era of “Islamic rule.” Several men loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas were shot point-blank in the streets, in front of their wives and children, after their hideout in the Palestinian security headquarters in Gaza City was stormed, witnesses said.

ARNIE: SPANISH TV A TURNOFF: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told Latino journalists this week that Spanish-speaking immigrants who want to learn English should shun the Spanish-language media. “You’ve got to turn off the Spanish television,” he said Wednesday in a panel discussion at the 25th annual National Association of Hispanic Journalists convention. Schwarzenegger angered Latinos last year by saying Mexicans had problems succeeding here because “they try to stay Mexican.” This time, he said other immigrants learn English faster because they don’t have as many outlets in their native tongues.

LBN-COMMENTARY By CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: Comprehensive immigration reform is in jeopardy because it is a complex compromise with too many moving parts and too many competing interests. Employers want a guest worker program; unions want to kill it. Reformers want to introduce a point system that preferentially admits skilled and educated immigrants; immigrant groups naturally want to keep the existing family preference system. Liberals want legalization now; conservatives insist on enforcement “triggers” first.
