*Iran May Quit Nuclear Deal in ‘Hours’ If New Sanctions Imposed

Iran is prepared to quit its nuclear deal with world powers “within hours” if new sanctions are imposed by the United States, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Tuesday. “If America wants to go back to the experience (of imposing sanctions), Iran would certainly return in a short time–not a week or a month but within hours–to conditions more advanced than before the start of negotiations,” Rouhani said at live-broadcast session of parliament in Tehran. “The world has clearly seen that under Trump, America has ignored international agreements and, in addition to undermining the (nuclear deal), has broken its word on the Paris agreement and the Cuba accord… and that the United States is not a good partner or a reliable negotiator.”
*North Korea Walks Back Guam Threats

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has dialed back threats to launch missiles at the U.S. territory of Guam, announcing earlyTuesday that Pyongyang will hold off on taking any action for the time being. In remarks published by Pyongyang’s state media, however, Kim warned that he could still carry through with the plans at any moment “if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions,” The Wall Street Journal reports. Though the North Korean leader gave no reason for his sudden change of heart in the latest episode of saber-rattling with Washington, his announcement followed an inspection of a military command post where senior officers reportedly presented him with plans for the potential strike on Guam. U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis had also warned late Mondaythat an attack on Guam would “escalate into war very quickly.”
*MY REVIEW: “My former girlfriend turned me on to LBN about five years ago and I don’t think I have missed reading it even once in that time. It is an exceptional, independent telling of news and information. It makes me smarter and more informed. What I most respect about LBN is that it isn’t conservative or liberal, it is unbiased and fearlessly. I have probably gotten at least five friends and family to sign up.” —–Bradley D., an LBN reader from Portland, Oregon.

*Household Debt Hits Record as Auto Loans and Credit Cards Climb:

U.S. household debt reached a new record of $12.8 trillion in the second quarter, driven by rising mortgage debt, a strong quarter for auto loan originations, and an uptick in credit-card balances, which reached their highest level since 2009. Today’s report marked the 12th consecutive quarterly increase in household debt, as Americans continue to re-embrace credit as the financial crisis recedes into memory. The total volume of debt is now $1.7 trillion higher than it was in 2013, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s quarterly report on household debt and credit. While overall debt has increased, the figures aren’t adjusted for the growth of the population or the economy. Total debt was 67% of the nominal gross domestic product in the second quarter, down from as high as 87% in 2009.

*Why Oprah Never Married Stedman:

After 31 years together, Oprah Winfrey and boyfriendStedman Graham have no intentions of getting married. However, the 63-year-old star wants people to know that they are both perfectly content with that fact. Speaking in the upcoming September issue of Vogue, the former talk show host was asked what being in a long term relationship, but not ever getting married, taught her about women in our society. “Live life on your own terms,” she responded. Winfrey went on to explain that the topic of marriage never really came up between her and Graham. The only time it did was when she asked him what would have happened if they’d ever actually got married. “We wouldn’t be together,” he responded.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Jake Tapper: I listen to a lot of old-school rap. The albums I downloaded most recently: N.W.A’sGreatest Hits, Jay-Z’s Volume 2 … Hard Knock Life, Gold by Erik B. and Rakim, The Chronic by Dr. Dre. I grew up in a kind of working-class section of Philadelphia, with public-housing projects half a block away, and I heard rap blasted a lot. It connects me to my youth, and I think it’s a social expression that people in discriminated communities connect to. In terms of emotional music, probably Johnny Cash. The song I’ve found most moving recently was the Avett Brothers‘ “True Sadness.” It’s one of the most beautiful and moving songs I’ve heard in a long time.
