Iran Threatens to Give U.S. a ‘Strong Slap in the Face’:

A commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard threatened Wednesday to give the U.S. a “strong slap in the face” if it underestimates Iran’s military. After taking office, PresidentTrump warned Iran that he would be tougher than his predecessor on the Islamic Republic and that the country was “on notice” following a ballistic missile test last month. Gen.Mohammad Pakpour, chief of the Guards’ ground forces, said, “The enemy should not be mistaken in its assessments, and it will receive a strong slap in the face if it does make such a mistake.” He added, “The message of these exercises… for world arrogance is not to do anything stupid… Everyone could see today what power we have on the ground.” Pakpour’s comments came as the Revolutionary Guard concluded three days of military exercises.

Report: Ex-Gitmo Detainee Turns Bomber:

Jamal al-Harith, a 50-year-old from Manchester, England, who was born Ronald Fiddler, was identified by his family as the man ISIS claims carried out a suicide bombing near Mosul in Iraq. Al-Harith was formerly a detainee at the prison at Guantanamo Bay and reportedly paid by the U.K. government after his release. He had been taken to Guantanamo after being found in a prison in Afghanistan in early 2002 after being intercepted by Taliban fighters who believed he was a British spy. According to his Guantanamo file, al-Harith was taken to the U.S. military prison because he was “expected to have knowledge of Taliban treatment of prisoners and interrogation tactics.”

New Trump Deportation Rules Allow Far More Expulsions:

President Trump has directed his administration to enforce the nation’s immigration laws more aggressively, unleashing the full force of the federal government to find, arrest and deport thosein the country illegally, regardless of whether they have committed serious crimes. Documents released on Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security revealed the broad scope of the president’s ambitions: to publicize crimes by undocumented immigrants; strip such immigrants of privacy protections; enlist local police officers as enforcers; erect new detention facilities; discourage asylum seekers; and, ultimately, speed up deportations. The new enforcement policies put into practice language that Mr. Trump used on the campaign trail, vastly expanding the definition of “criminal aliens” and warning that such unauthorized immigrants “routinely victimize Americans,” disregard the “rule of law and pose a threat” to people in communities across the United States.

U.S. Falling Behind in Life Expectancy:

A new study says South Korean women will have an average life expectancy above 90 years by 2030, while the U.S. is projected to have one of the lowest lifespans among rich nations. The study, conducted by Imperial College London and the World Health Organization, examined life expectancy in 35 developed nations. South Korea leads the ranking, with South Korean women expected to live beyond the age of 90 thanks to the nation’s low obesity rates and overall good health care. The study’s U.S. findings weren’t as optimistic, with the average lifespan of men expected to be 80 and that of women to be 83 by 2030. Majid Ezzati, the study’s lead researcher, said the trend in the U.S. was basically the opposite of that in South Korea. Society in the U.S. is “very unequal to an extent the whole national performance is affected—it is the only country without universal health insurance,” Ezzati told the BBC. “And it is the first country that has stopped growing taller, which shows something about early-life nutrition,” he was cited as saying. The study, published in The Lancet, also showed the gap between men and women narrowing, and life expectancy increasing in most developed countries. Macedonia and Serbia were at the bottom of the list, with women’s life expectancy at 78 in the former and men’s at 73 in the latter. The study calculated the average lifespan for a baby born in 2030.

U.S. Shutting Dakota Access Pipeline Protest Camp:

The Army Corps of Engineers has told those who remain at acamp protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline that they must clear out by 2 p.m. Wednesday. The protest site is on federal land between the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and the pipeline route, and has been the location of several clashes between law enforcement and, at times, thousands of demonstrators. Morton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswomanMaxine Herr said authorities hope to make Wednesday’s evacuation “diplomatic,” but said there could be large-scale arrests at the site if they don’t receive cooperation. Native American activist Chase Iron Eyes said many “will engage in peaceful, civil resistance… holding hands, standing in prayer.

Bill Maher Takes Credit for Milo Yiannopoulos’s Fall:

After taking flak for inviting incendiary alt-right personality Milo Yiannopoulos onto his show Real Time, Bill Maher is now claiming credit for the pundit’s downfall. “What I think people saw was an emotionally needy Ann Coulter wannabe, trying to make a buck off of the left’s propensity for outrage,” Maher said. “And by the end of the weekend, by dinnertime Monday, he’s dropped as a speaker at CPAC. Then he’s dropped by Breitbart, and his book deal falls through. As I say, sunlight is the best disinfectant. You’re welcome.” Maher still distanced himself from the idea that Yiannopoulos’s ideas could do any real harm. “Can he do damage? I suppose he can. To a degree. Not a great degree, I don’t think,” Maher said. “It just rubs me the wrong way when somebody says, ‘I don’t like what this person is saying—he should go away.’” Most of the criticism faced by Maher in the wake of the program centered on the fact that he didn’t correct Yiannopoulos when he misspoke or said something offensive. He responded, “It’s not my job to hold him accountable to everything he’s ever said or done. I had eight minutes with him, on the show itself.” He added, “You know what he is? He’s the little impish, bratty kid brother. And the liberals are his older teenager sisters who are having a sleepover and he puts a spider in their sleeping bag so he can watch them scream.”

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***McDonald’s Corp., reeling from an industrywide restaurant slump and slowing growth from its all-day breakfast push, is looking to beverages to help perk up the business. The world’s biggest food-service company, which last year focused its advertising on cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches, plans to offer $1 sodas and $2 McCafe specialty drinks across the U.S. It’s turning to higher-margin beverages at a time when cheap grocery prices are prodding more Americans to eat at home. The drink promotion may also help McDonald’s cope with the eventual rebound in food costs.

LBN-INVESTIGATES: An illegal immigrant gang member from El Salvador was allowed to walk free from Rikers Island under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “Sanctuary City” law — in defiance of a federal petition to hold him for deportation, officials said Tuesday. “This man is by his own admission a member of a violent street gang and he was released back into the community,” said Thomas Decker, field office director for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement unit in New York. “Honoring a detainer request is not about politics, it is about keeping New York citizens safe.”

LBN-COMMENTARY by Thomas L. Friedman: It should be clear by now that there are five different Trump administrations swirling before our eyes — Trump Entertainment, Trump Cleanup, Trump Crazy, Trump G.O.P. and the Essential Trump — and no one can predict which will define this presidency, let alone make a success of it. Trump Entertainment shows up every day now in the form of an outrageous “alternative fact,” a pugnacious press conference, a tweet denouncing the news media as “the enemy of the American people” — or as a pep rally in Florida, unconnected to any particular legislative agenda and organized entirely for the purpose of giving the president an ego sugar high. The country, though, is getting addicted to Trump Entertainment. It is hard to avert your gaze from a president who will say anything about anything. It’s so unusual, like a flying elephant or a horse that can talk, that you can’t help but stare. But it’s such a waste of energy. I wonder if the Chinese are spending their days this way. I suspect they’ve added another high-speed rail line just since Trump’s election. Trump Cleanup comprises the adults on his team who follow in the wake of Trump Entertainment and “clarify” what the president meant. It’s Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis assuring the South Koreans that — despite what Trump said — we’ll honor our security commitments to them, or assuring the Iraqis that we’re actually not going to steal their oil. It’s the U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, clarifying that — despite what Trump said — we’re still committed to two states for Israelis and Palestinians.

LBN-COMMENTARY by Dennis Prager: After the election of Donald Trump as president, a professor at Orange Coast College in California, Olga Perez Stable Cox, went into an extended hate-rant against the president-elect. Among other things, she described the Trump election as an “act of terrorism,” labelled him a “white supremacist” and called Vice-President-Elect Mike Pence “one of the most anti-gay humans in this country.” And this wasn’t even a political science class in which one might expect political talk, no matter how irresponsible. Stable Cox is a professor of human sexuality.

LBN-COMMENTARY by Michael Levine (Media expert and author – ) : A little charm and grace can take you many places mere hustle never will.

LBN COMMENTARY by Adam Heller: Living begins when you crawl out of the skinny branches.

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***As one of the world’s most famous ex-porn stars, a XXX icon who’s appeared in close to 200 adult films, it is pretty surprising that Jenna Jameson has rebranded herself as an alt-right firebrand. Then again, the 42-year-old formerly known as Jenna Marie Massoli has, in recent years, become a major proponent of far-right thought, tweeting and retweeting provocative messages criticizing Muslims and immigrants to her 693,000 followers (some of whom, we assume, may have thought they were going to receive more than regurgitated Breitbart headlines).  Jameson, a vocal supporter of Trump—who claims to have converted to Judaism in order to wed her fraudster fiancé, and once cameoed on The Celebrity Apprentice—has spent much of the last 48 hours engaged in an anti-Muslim Twitter tirade, which began after she leapt to the defense of President Trump’s spurious implication at a Florida rally that Sweden had suffered some sort of terrorist attack when it had not, prompting the former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt to question on Twitter what Trump had “been smoking.”
