Trump Named Time’s Person of the Year:
President-elect Donald Trump
has been named Time
magazine’s Person of the Year for 2016. The cover reads “Donald Trump: President of the Divided States of America,” and Trump marked the announcement with an appearance on NBC’sToday Show
. “To be on the cover of Time
as Person of the Year is a tremendous honor,” Trump told Matt Lauer
on Wednesday morning, complaining, however—in typical Trump fashion—that he found the word “divided” to be a “snarky” choice for the magazine’s headline. Since 1932, every U.S. president has been named Person of the Year at least one time. President Obama
was given the award in both 2008 and 2012, after he won those respective elections. President George W. Bush
received the same honor in 2000 and 2004.
Pope Francis: ‘Sin’ to Spread Fake News:
declared in an interview published Wednesday that spreading fake news in order to discredit others is a “sin.” The pontiff also delivered a strong rebuke of the news media and its motivation to cover and give attention to scandals. “I think the media have to be very clear, very transparent, and not fall into—no offense intended—the sickness of coprophilia, that is, always wanting to cover scandals, covering nasty things, even if they are true,” he said, adding that it is a “sin” and “hurtful” to slander politicians based on false information.
Bob Dole Worked Behind the Scenes on Trump-Taiwan Call:
Former Senator Bob Dole
, acting as a foreign agent for the government of Taiwan, worked behind the scenes over the past six months to establish high-level contact between Taiwanese officials and President-elect Donald J. Trump
’s staff, an outreach effort that culminated last week in an unorthodox telephone call between Mr. Trump and Taiwan’s president. Mr. Dole, a lobbyist with the Washington law firm Alston & Bird, coordinated with Mr. Trump’s campaign and the transition team to set up a series of meetings between Mr. Trump’s advisers and officials in Taiwan, according to disclosure documents filed last week with the Justice Department. Mr. Dole also assisted in successful efforts by Taiwan to include language favorable to it in the Republican Party platform, according to the documents. Mr. Dole’s firm received $140,000 from May to October for the work, the forms said.
Italian PM Matteo Renzi to Officially Resign:
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi
will officially resign later Wednesday after the Italian Senate approved the country’s 2017 budget. Renzi wrote on Twitter that he would formally step down at 7:00 p.m. local time. The premier visited the Quirinale Palace on Monday to meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella
, just one day after he suffered a stinging defeat in a referendum on changes to the country’s constitution. Mattarella had asked that Renzi stay on as prime minister until the budget was approved. Mattarella will now be tasked with choosing a new premier, who will serve in a caretaker role until elections, which are slated for early 2018, take place. Some, including opposition parties like the Five-Star Movement and Northern League, have called for elections to be held in 2017, in an attempt to build momentum from their efforts to topple Renzi’s constitutional reforms which were voted down by a margin of 60 percent to 40 percent.
Trump Softens on DREAMers: ‘We’re Going to Work Something Out’:
President-elect Donald Trump
indicated in a new interview that the will soften his hardline position on undocumented immigrants in favor of the so-called DREAMers—those who were brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents at a young age. In an interview with Time
, Trump did not waver on his promise to roll back President Obama
’s executive orders with regard to immigration, but he softened his often harsh tone when it comes to immigration reform. “We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud,” Trump told the magazine for its Person of the Year feature. “They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in Never-Never Land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Sofia Vergara Sued by Her Own Embryos:
Actress Sofia Vergara
is facing a right-to-live lawsuit filed on behalf of her embryos—named “Emma” and “Isabella” in Louisiana court papers. The lawsuit is just the latest bizarre twist in the legal battle between Vergara and former fiancé Nick Loeb
, who has fought for custody of the embryos that were made by the couple while still together in 2013. The lawsuit against Vergara lists James Carbonnet
as a plaintiff and the “trustee” to Vergara’s female embryos, according to Page Six. The plaintiff claims that since they were never born, the two embryos were deprived of an inheritance from a trust created for them in Louisiana, the report said. He asks that the embryos be given to Loeb so that they can be born and live off of the trust money. Vergara and Loeb split up in May 2014 after two rounds of in vitro fertilization treatment failed, and Loeb has sought to get control of the embryos since shortly after the two parted ways.
Trump picks trade advocate to be ambassador to China: For all his talk of punishing China, President-elect Trump has chosen a conciliator with a personal relationship with China’s president to be his ambassador in Beijing. An Iowa governor might seem an unlikely choice for one of the more sensitive diplomatic posts, but Gov. Terry Branstad has ties with China that go back decades.
Homeland Security: 900 percent surge in asylum demands, only half of illegals caught:
A damning new report on the Obama administration’s immigration policies and actions shows that about half of illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border are actually caught, and demands for asylum have exploded 900 percent. The report done for the Department of Homeland Security said that asylum demands since President Obama
came into office and loosened immigration requirements surged from 17,000 to 170,000. What’s more, despite claims that up to 81 percent of all illegals are apprehended crossing the border, just 54 percent actually are, according to the report from Institute for Defense Analyses. The report, done for DHS, is titled “Assessing Southern Border Security.”

|*Trump picks retired Marine Gen. John F. Kelly, an outspoken critic of the Obama administration, to head Department of Homeland Security:
|President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine Gen. John F. Kelly to run the Department of Homeland Security, turning to a blunt-spoken border security hawk who clashed with the Obama administration over women in combat and plans to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, according to people familiar with the decision. Kelly, who retired in February as chief of U.S. Southern Command, would inherit a massive and often troubled department responsible for overseeing perhaps the most controversial part of Trump’s agenda: his proposed crackdown on illegal immigration.
Ohio Passes ‘Heartbeat’ Abortion Bill:
Ohio lawmakers on Tuesday passed the strictest abortion law in the nation. The “heartbeat bill” would outlaw the procedure once a fetal heartbeat can be detected—at about six weeks. “This bill—which was tacked on as a last-minute amendment to a child-abuse prevention bill—makes no exceptions for rape or incest victims,” Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Kathy DiCristofaro
said. “It is cruel and plainly unconstitutional—but it seems like Ohio Republicans don’t care about the Constitution. Trump’s vision for America is already alive and well in the Buckeye State.” Similar laws in other states have failed over fear of being ruled unconstitutional in federal courts. “A new president, new Supreme Court appointees change the dynamic, and there was consensus in our caucus to move forward,” said Republican Senate President Keith Faber
. “I think it has a better chance than it did before.” Ohio Gov. John Kasich
has said on more than one occasion that he opposes the legislation.
Study: Weak Gun Checks Linked to More School Shootings:
A new study has found that states with mandatory background checks on gun purchases are about half as likely to have a school shooting than those with no background checks. Further, researchers said that states in which people must submit to a check before buying ammunition were even less likely to experience a school shooting. The study, published in Injury Prevention
, examined 154 such incidents in the U.S.between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2015. A school shooting was defined as “an incident when a firearm was discharged inside a school building or on a school campus or grounds.” More than half of those incidents happened on a K-12 campus. Among the findings: Sixty-six percent were intentional, and 99 percent were perpetrated by boys; 36 percent of the assailants were students. Those school shootings were spread among 39 states. Between 2013 and 2015, Georgia had 15 school shootings, while Texas and Florida each had 14. North Carolina had 12 school shootings, and Tennessee had 10. But there were 11 states with no school shootings in that time period, including Alaska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, Hawaii, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
