LBN – Special Report – Wednesday

*Hillary Clinton Wins California, Bolstering Claim to Nomination

Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday night after decisive victories in the California, New Jersey and New Mexico primaries, and she quickly appealed to supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont to unite with her against Donald J. Trump. The Associated Press reported early Wednesday that Mrs. Clinton had won California, but Mr. Sanders gave no indication that he would yield, insisting earlier that he would continue his campaign and barely acknowledging her achievement. With the 14-month Democratic race nearing a close, Mrs. Clinton savored the biggest night of her extraordinary journey from lawyer, wife and first lady to senator, secretary of state and, now, the first woman to win a major party’s nomination. At a rally in Brooklyn, she took the stage with her hands clasped over her heart in gratitude, then threw open her arms in joy and savored a long moment as a jubilant crowd waved American flags and chanted “Hillary.”

*Microsoft Finds Cancer Clues in Search Queries

Microsoft scientists have demonstrated that by analyzing large samples of search engine queries they may in some cases be able to identify internet users who are suffering from pancreatic cancer, even before they have received a diagnosis of the disease. The scientists said they hoped their work could lead to early detection of cancer. Their study was published on Tuesday in The Journal of Oncology Practice by Dr. Eric Horvitz and Dr. Ryen White, the Microsoft researchers, and John Paparrizos, a Columbia University graduate student. We asked ourselves, ‘If we heard the whispers of people online, would it provide strong evidence or a clue that something’s going on?’” Dr. Horvitz said. The researchers focused on searches conducted on Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, that indicated someone had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. From there, they worked backward, looking for earlier queries that could have shown that the Bing user was experiencing symptoms before the diagnosis. Those early searches, they believe, can be warning flags.

*F.B.I. Steps Up Use of Stings in ISIS Cases

The F.B.I. has significantly increased its use of stings in terrorism cases, employing agents and informants to pose as jihadists, bomb makers, gun dealers or online “friends” in hundreds of investigations into Americans suspected of supporting the Islamic State, records and interviews show. Undercover operations, once seen as a last resort, are now used in about two of every three prosecutions involving people suspected of supporting the Islamic State, a sharp rise in the span of just two years, according to a New York Times analysis. Charges have been brought against nearly 90 Americans believed to be linked to the group.

*LBN-INVESTIGATES: Hillary Clinton took a lot of flak on Monday after a report surfaced that the presidential candidate wore a Giorgio Armani jacket worth more than $12,000 during a speech in April about inequality.

*LBN-INVESTIGATES: Bullying

1. Research shows that half of all children are bullied at some time during their school years. More than 10% are bullied regularly.

2. More parents are allowing their young children to undergo plastic surgery to combat bullying. For example, Samantha Shaw, a 1st grader, underwent surgery to get her ears pinned back to prevent her from being bullied.

3. The word “bully” was first used in 1530 and originally applied to both genders and meant “sweetheart.” It is from the Dutch boel, meaning “lover” or “brother.” Around the seventeenth century, the term began to mean “fine fellow,” “blusterer,” and then “harasser of the weak.”

4. Over 30% of children who suffer a food allergy report having been bullied at school. While verbal abuse was the most common form of bullying, 40% reported having been physically threatened, such as having the allergen thrown or waved at them or being touched by the allergen. Food allergies affect an estimated three million children.

5. Though girls tend to use more indirect, emotional forms of bullying, research indicates that girls are becoming more physical than they have in the past.

6. Boys tend to bully according to group, such as “athlete” versus “non-athlete.” Girls tend to bully according to social status, such as “popular” vs. “non-popular.”

7. When boys bully, they tend to use more threats and physical intimidation on both boys and girls. Girls are usually more verbal and tend to target other girls.

8. Bullying happens not just in the United States but also all over the world. International researchers have demonstrated that bullying in schools is universal.

9. Several factors increase the risk of a child being bullied, including parental over-control, illness or disability, passivity, social phobia, agoraphobia, and higher levels and expression of general anxiety.

*LBN-LEGAL INSIDER:   ***A drug trafficking case has been dismissed against a truck driver from Arbuckle, California, after his attorney Larry Vandersnick, with criminal defense law firm Imhoff & Associates, demonstrated their client was an alleged victim of illegal search and seizure during a vehicle search by the police on Interstate 80, as the truck was driving across Illinois. This is according to court records from the circuit court of the fourteenth judicial circuit, Henry County, Illinois. Case No. 15CF65. Imhoff & Associates demonstrated that the police allegedly searched the defendant’s vehicle without probable cause and did not exercise proper police procedure when they took control of their client’s equipment. Imhoff & Associates were successful in having the case against their client dismissed, according to court records. According to the police, the truck contained 35 pounds of cocaine and 10 pounds of methamphetamine with a value of 2 million dollars. Imhoff’s client was charged with five Class X felonies which could have resulted in 6 – 15 years in prison. Vandersnick successfully presented evidence of improper search and seizure that lead to the dismissal of the case according to court records.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Thomas L. Friedman: If a party could declare moral bankruptcy, today’s Republican Party would be in Chapter 11. This party needs to just shut itself down and start over — now. Seriously, someone please start a New Republican Party! America needs a healthy two-party system. America needs a healthy center-right party to ensure that the Democrats remain a healthy center-left party. America needs a center-right party ready to offer market-based solutions to issues like climate change. America needs a center-right party that will support common-sense gun laws. America needs a center-right party that will support common-sense fiscal policy. America needs a center-right party to support both free trade and aid to workers impacted by it. America needs a center-right party that appreciates how much more complicated foreign policy is today, when you have to manage weak and collapsing nations, not just muscle strong ones. But this Republican Party is none of those things. Today’s G.O.P. is to governing what Trump University is to education — an ethically challenged enterprise that enriches and perpetuates itself by shedding all pretense of standing for real principles, or a truly relevant value proposition, and instead plays on the ignorance and fears of the public.

*LBN-A DIFFERENT VIEW:…

*LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Lisa Ling welcomed her second child, a daughter named Ray, with husband Dr. Paul Song on Monday.   ***Richard Simmons’ publicist has denied claims the fitness guru is living as a woman after undergoing a secret sex change. The tabloid reported that the 67-year-old recluse has undergone breast implant surgery and hormone therapy over the course of two years. They also reported that he had been to seen a medical consultant about castration during his self-imposed exile inside his Hollywood mansion.
