*U.S. Service Member Killed by ISIS

Pentagon officials said Tuesday than a U.S. service member was killed in combat in Iraq as “a result of enemy fire” when ISIS fighters broke through the Kurdish line of defense. The serviceman reportedly died near the city of Irbil. He was two or three miles behind the front line, according to U.S. officials. “It is a combat death,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter said. “Americans are at risk today every single day here.”

*Tonys: ‘Hamilton’ Nets Record 16 Nominations

Among the highlights from Tuesday morning’s announcement of the 2016 Tony Awards nominees: Critical favorite Hamilton made history with 16 total nominations, including Best New Musical. Among the high-profile snubs: Acclaimed leads like Shuffle Along’s Audra McDonald, American Psycho’s Benjamin Walker, and The Color Purple’s Jennifer Hudson were all left off this year’s lineup.

*Sheldon Silver Gets 12 Years in Prison

Disgraced ex-New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in federal prison for corruption charges. Silver was found guilty on all charges in Nov. 2015 after prosecutors proved he took millions of dollars worth of bribes from real-estate and medical interests. Silver’s 12-year sentence falls short of the 14-year sentence handed to former Assemblyman William Boyland.
