RED-HANDED – U.S. Has ‘Conclusive’ Russia Leak Evidence:

U.S. intelligence agencies have found conclusive evidence that Russia provided hacked documents from the Democratic National Committee to WikiLeaks via a third party, Reuters reports. The news agency reportedly interviewed three U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation, who contend that intelligence agencies obtained the evidence of the Kremlin’s role in the wake of the November election–not before. Months earlier, authorities had concluded that Russia had directed the hacking, but it had not been clear if it had played a bigger role in the release of the leaked information. The report comes as top U.S. intelligence officials head to Capitol Hill on Thursday to testify before a special Senate hearing about the alleged hacking. Despite public statements released by both the CIA and the FBI, President-elect Donald Trump has voiced continued skepticism about the Kremlin’s role in the breach. Party leaders on both sides of the aisle have since called for a probe on the Russian role in the hack, and President Obama has taken heat from within the Democratic Party over failing to respond to the breach before the election. An intelligence report on the issue will be presented to Obama on Thursday and to Trump on Friday.

Charges Expected in Chicago Torture Video:

Chicago police say charges are expected Thursday for four people in custody for a Facebook Live video that appears to depict a group holding a young man hostage. The young man is kicked and hit, while his mouth is taped shut. The suspects in the video also shout “Fuck Donald Trump! Fuck white people!” and at one point the young man’s scalp is cut. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the victim, who has “mental health challenges,” is recovering from his injuries after hospital treatment. Johnson called the video “sickening.” Police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin said authorities are still investigating the attack to “determine whether or not this is sincere or just stupid ranting and raving.” He said he believes it’s too soon to tell if it was genuinely racially motivated. The video has since been removed from Facebook. A spokesman told the Associated Press that the social-media platform does “not allow people to celebrate or glorify crimes on Facebook.”

Trump to Face Sworn Deposition in Trump Tower:

President-elect Donald Trump may be forced to sit down for a sworn deposition as early as Thursday morning, stemming from a case he filed over a prominent chef’s decision to back out of plans to open a restaurant in his new Washington, D.C. hotel. Lawyers for Jose Andres will have as much as seven hours to grill Trump over the lawsuit, initiated after the restaurateur ditched the idea to start a Spanish-themed eatery after the then-candidate’s remarks about Mexican immigrants. A judge declined Trump’s request to cap the session at two hours, despite arguments that he’s working to finalize his Cabinet in the leadup to the Jan. 20 inauguration. The deposition will be videotaped. President Bill Clinton was the last commander in chief to be deposed—in Paula Jones’ sexual harassment suit in 1998. Prior to that, only Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, andUlysses Grant faced deposition while in office. Trump is likely to face a string of other legal battles while in office, with several high-profile lawsuits still pending.

Dylann Roof, Addressing Court, Offers No Apology or Explanation for Massacre:

Seeming to abdicate one of his last chances to save his own life, the convicted killer Dylann S. Roof stood on Wednesday before the jurors who will decide his fate and offered no apology, no explanation and no remorse for massacring nine black churchgoers during a Bible study session in June 2015. Instead, in a strikingly brief opening statement in the sentencing phase of his federal death penalty trial, Mr. Roof repeatedly assured the jury that he was not mentally ill — undercutting one of the few mitigating factors that could work in his favor — and left it at that. “Other than the fact that I trust people that I shouldn’t and the fact that I’m probably better at constantly embarrassing myself than anyone who’s ever existed, there’s nothing wrong with me psychologically,” Mr. Roof, who is representing himself, told the jury, which found him guilty last month of the killings at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

During his decades in prison, Charles Manson has repeatedly broken rules, caused trouble:

During his more than four decades behind bars, convicted murderer Charles Manson — the mastermind behind a gory 1969 Los Angeles killing rampage — has been an unrepentant and incorrigible inmate, repeatedly cited for behavioral problems including hiding cellphones and a hacksaw in his cell.  State corrections officials say Manson, now 82, has incurred more than 100 rules violations since 1971, when he and other members of his so-called family were convicted of killing pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people during a bloody rampage in the Los Angeles area during two August nights in 1969.  Over the years, he has been cited for assault, repeated possession of a weapon, threatening staff, and possessing a cellphone, Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said in an email Wednesday. “Suffice it to say that he cannot be described as a model prisoner,” she said.

NIH to Parents: Give Your Babies Peanuts to Prevent Allergies:

New federal guidelines issued Thursday recommend exposing babies to peanuts early on to prevent the development of adangerous allergy to the food. In a turnaround, the National Institutes of Health says landmark research has found that allowing babies to eat peanut-containing items before their first birthday dramatically lowers their chances of becoming allergic to the nut later on. The guidelines specify that various risk factors determine whether exposures at different ages may be more effective at preventing the allergy. Officials are also quick to point out that these guidelines require a checkup before anything is tried at home. “We’re on the cusp of hopefully being able to prevent a large number of cases of peanut allergy,” saidMatthew Greenhawt, a member of the NIH panel that penned the new guidelines.

Obama Encourages Trump to Continue Criminal-Justice Reform:

President Obama has penned a lengthy essay that urges hissuccessor to continue the current administration’s criminal-justice reforms. “Those privileged to serve as president and in senior roles in the Executive Branch have an obligation to use that influence to enhance the fairness and effectiveness of the justice system at all phases,” Obama wrote in a Harvard Law Review piece published Thursday. The 56-page article marks the first time a sitting U.S. president has published such an extensive piece of “legal scholarship,” the editor of the journal said. “I continue to believe that a historic moment exists to embrace the bipartisan momentum on this issue,” he wrote. “That kind of reform is good politics as well as good policy.”

Tommy Mottola says ex-wife Mariah Carey needs help:

Mariah Carey’s ex-husband Tommy Mottola urges the singer to seek “more seasoned and respected professionals” to guide her career after her disastrous New Year’s Eve performance. He also blasts the singer’s decision to do a reality show in a letter exclusively given to Page Six. “MC is arguably the greatest pop voice to come along in the last three decades. She has had more number one hits than any pop artist in history!!! She is a global icon and a treasure with incredible talent not only as a singer but as a great songwriter. What happened on NYE could’ve happened to anyone! Yes, her technical people should’ve helped pay more attention to all of it so that there was no chance of that happening.”

Omarosa: ‘Huge Movement’ of Black Voters Moving to GOP:

Omarosa Manigault, aide to Donald Trump and former Apprentice and Survivor star, said there is a “huge movement” of black voters ditching the Democrats and shifting to the Republican Party. “Traditionally, African-Americans have been Democrat, and I think the Democrats have taken advantage and taken for granted the African-American vote,” she told Fox News. “You are seeing a huge movement of African-Americans moving to the Republican Party,” she said. She didn’t offer any statistics or evidence for the “huge movement,” but New York Times exit polls did show an increase in black voters since 2012—a 2-percentage-point increase. While Mitt Romney had 6 percent support among black voters in 2012, Trump got a whole 8 percent in 2016, according to the Times data. Manigault’s remarks came after reports she led a meeting between Trump’s transition team and leaders of various black organizations in Washington on Wednesday.

Comedy Sensation Kevin Hart Rocks New Year at the Laugh Factory:

Kevin Hart stopped by the Laugh Factory unannounced on New Year’s Day to perform two 30-minute sets of new stand-up material where he received a standing ovation. Pookey Wigington, producer of the Sunday show said, “In my lifetime I have only seen one other comedian trying new material and a great story teller. Kevin telling a story about taking his kids skiing and how hilarious it was. The only other person who got such a wonderful reaction in this club was the legendary Richard Pryor, in my book Kevin Hart is the best comedian alive now.” Hart’s the man who sees the humor in life experiences and makes fans take a cold hard look at the things everyone thinks but is too afraid to say. He’s irreverent, bold, and somewhat brass; yet there’s an innocent sensitivity that pulls at the heart strings which make fans want to take hold and go along for the ride.
