Hillary Earned Historic Number of Votes:
In the final, certified presidential-election tally, Hillary Clintonreceived more votes than any other losing candidate in U.S. history. She won about 2.9 million more votes than President-elect Donald Trump, with a total of 65,844,954—or 48.2 percent of the vote. Trump received 62,979,879 votes, or 46.1 percent of the total. However, Clinton’s margin only ranks third among defeated presidential candidates. Andrew Jackson, in 1824, won the popular vote by 10 percent and still lost the presidency to John Quincy Adams. In second place, Samuel Tilden got 3 percent more votes than Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876. Hayes won the Electoral College by just one electoral vote.
Obama to Dismantle 9/11-Era Registry:
will dismantle a 9/11-era national registry program for visitors to the U.S. from countries with active terrorist groups, an action that many have requested before Donald Trump
takes office. Trump has indicated that he hopes to resurrect the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System, which was created in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. It has not been used since 2011, and many see Obama’s move to dismantle the program as largely symbolic. Trump has said repeatedly that he intends to set up a registry for Muslims in the U.S. and ban others from entering the country. When asked about the Berlin attack and whether he still plans to set up such a system, Trump said Wednesday: “You know my plans.”
Cyber Experts: Link Between Aggression Against Ukraine, DNC Hacks:
Technology purportedly used to hack the Democratic National Committee bears a striking resemblance to software used against the Ukrainian military, a top cybersecurity group says. A new report from the firm CrowdStrike said the malwareresponsible for the DNC breach is a “variant” of the one that has been used to locate the position of Ukrainian artillery units in the wake of Russia’s invasion of the Crimean Peninsula two years ago. The findings
bolster evidence that the hackers who attacked the DNC had a connection to the Russian government. CrowdStrike has said that software was developed by a hacker known as Fancy Bear. “This establishes a clear link between Fancy Bear and the Russian military,” said the co-founder of CrowdStrike, Dmitri Alperovitch
. U.S. intelligence agencies, including the FBI and the CIA, have said the hacks on the Democratic Party were likely directed by senior Russian government officials. Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in the hacks.
IKEA to Pay $50 Million in Wrongful Death Settlement:
Furniture giant IKEA will pay $50 million in a wrongful deathsettlement after some of its dressers fell on top of three young boys, killing them. The settlement amount is believed to be one of the largest ever in such a case. The victims included Curren Collas, a toddler at the time of his death in 2014, and two boys who were about to turn two years old, Theodore McGee and Camden Ellis. IKEA argued that the families were at fault for the toppled dressers for not supporting them onto the wall in their homes, but the families said IKEA was at fault because it knew of the potential for the dressers to collapse. The families will be paid $50 million in total, and IKEA said it would donate $150,000 to children’s hospitals.
Trump Taps Kellyanne Conway for Counselor to the President:
, President-elect Donald Trump’s
2016 campaign manager, will serve as counselor to the president in his administration. Trump’s team announced the appointment early Thursday. “Kellyanne Conway has been a trusted adviser and strategist who played a crucial role in my victory,” the real-estate mogul said in a statement. “She is a tireless and tenacious advocate of my agenda and has amazing insights on how to effectively communicate our message. I am pleased that she will be part of my senior team in the West Wing.” Conway previously mentioned in interviews that she was reticent to accept a White House post because of her young children. But on Thursday, she called the announcement an “amazing opportunity.” She continued, “I am humbled and honored to play a role in helping transform the movement he has led into a real agenda of action and results.”
Jewish Museum: Google Profits From Holocaust Denial:
A Jewish museum in Atlanta says Google is profiting from Holocaust denial, because the institution has to pay to be the top result for the search term “did the Holocaust happen” over neo-Nazi websites. The Breman Museum pays $2 a click to guide people to their site over the many others claiming the Holocaust never occurred. David Schendowich
, marketing director of the museum, said it’s “nauseating” to have to shell out the money to AdWords, Google’s ad service, for the result. “They may not take money from people denying the Holocaust, but the point is that museums and other organizations are paying to combat this stuff,” Schendowich said. “They plainly are. We are. We’re paying them up to $2 a click.” He added that search engine optimization, as well as AdWords, is a large part of the museum’s current marketing strategy. In response, a spokesman from Google said, “We never want to make money from searches for Holocaust denial and we don’t allow regular advertising on those terms.”

Spiking Temperatures in the Arctic Startle Scientists:
A spate of extreme warmth in the Arctic over the past two months has startled scientists, who warn that the high temperatures may lead to record-low ice coverage next summer and even more warming in a region that is already among the hardest hit by climate change. In mid-November, parts of the Arctic were more than 35 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than observed averages, scientists said, and at the pole itself, mean temperatures for the month were 23 degrees above normal. Although conditions later cooled somewhat, the extreme warmth is expected to return, with temperatures forecast to be as much as 27 degrees above normal beginning Thursday.
