Assad: Sarin Gas Attack Was a ‘Play’

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday denied that his government has ever launched chemical-weapon attacks, and said last week’s attack on civilians—which was deemed to be carried out using deadly sarin gas—was a “play.” More than 80 people died in the attack, including young children. “We gave up our [chemical-weapons] arsenal a few years ago. Even if we have them, we wouldn’t use them, and we have never used our chemical arsenal in our history,” Assad told AFP in an interview. “Our impression that the West—mainly the United States—is hand in glove with the terrorists. They fabricated the whole story.” He added that the images and videos released on social media following the attack amounted to a “play” and “propaganda.”

Roughed Up United Passenger Takes First Legal Action

Lawyers for David Dao, the United Airlines passenger who was forcibly removed from his seat and dragged down the aisle Sunday night, took their first legal action Wednesday. Dao’s attorneys asked Illinois state court to order that all relevant surveillance footage, cockpit voice recordings, and other materials be preserved in order to avoid “serious prejudice” against Dao. The incident took place on a United Airlines flight that originated in Chicago and was bound for Louisville. Legal experts have posited that it is likely United Airlines will settle with the passenger due to the public-relations nightmare that has ensued.

Japan’s Abe: North Korea Could Hit Us With Sarin-Topped Missiles

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday he believes North Korea now has the capability—or will soon—to fire missiles loaded with the lethal nerve agent sarin. Abe was speaking at a parliamentary panel on national security when he voiced the concern. His comments came as satellite images are reported to indicate the Hermit Kingdom’s testing grounds appear to be “primed and ready” for a sixth nuclear test. According to monitoring service 38 North, “the activity during the past six weeks is suggestive of the final preparations.” Analyst Joseph Bermudez, who, with colleagues, has accurately predicted other tests, said indicators that precede the tests include new equipment, excavation, and water pumps, and an uptick in activity. “We watch what changes from image to image,” he said. A new test could coincide with North Korea’s celebration of the birthday of its founder, Kim Il Sung, on Saturday.

German Prosecutor: Man Arrested After Bus Attack Is ISIS

German prosecutors said Thursday that a 26-year-old Iraqi man detained after an attack on a bus carrying a soccer team is a member of the Islamic State terror group. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office was careful to point out that so far no evidence leads it to believe that Abdul Beset A. took part in planting the bombs, which detonated Tuesday in three explosions as the Borussia Dortmund bus traveled to a Champions League match. Prosecutors said Thursday that the suspect, while in Iraq, led a commando unit responsible for smuggling, kidnapping, killings, and extortion, according to a statement. He’ll soon appear before a judge who will ultimately rule on an arrest warrant to decide whether he can be held for longer than 24 hours. Tuesday’s attack injured Spanish defender Marc Bartra. Three letters were found near the scene of the explosions, which reportedly led authorities to believe there was an Islamist motive for the explosions.

Partridge’s album, will be released by Origin Records on April 21st and is a re-imagination of 11 of Ian’s songs. In addition, the duo wrote two originals for the recording and Ian duets with Partridge on one. Janis Ian, who has received a total of 10 Grammy nominations in 8 different categories began her musical career at the age of 12 and has continued to have an illustrious career for the past 5 decades.Ian believes, “we don’t sell music, we sell dreams.” “I chose the Bitter End for the CD Release because it is one of the New York clubs where Janis began her career at the age of 14. This venue has such history, and Fred Weintraub, gave so many talented musicians a chance to perform on his stage. It’s poignant that Weintraub died in March and that the club continues to thrive. This should be a great night of music and hopefully a fitting tribute to Janis who will welcome the audience in a video before the show,” says Partridge.

LBN-SPOTLIGHT: The marketing strategies of Sears of the past century didn’t work against muscular young competitors like Walmart. Sears closed stores; it eliminated products; it sold off Allstate, its most profitable subsidiary; but it wasn’t able to stop the bleeding. A friend took a job at Dean Witter, the brokerage house Sears bought in an effort to stanch the flow. I’d visit her at Sears on our lunch breaks, where the smell of stale popcorn made the store seem dreary and old. —–
