*LBN-R.I.P.: ***Merle Haggard, one of the most successful singers in the history of country music, a contrarian populist whose songs about his scuffling early life and his time in prison made him the closest thing that the genre had to a real-life outlaw hero, died at his ranch in Northern California on Wednesday, his 79th birthday. His death was confirmed by his agent, Lance Roberts. Mr. Haggard had recently canceled several concerts, saying he had double pneumonia. ***Seymour M. Lazar, a swashbuckling entertainment lawyer, stock trader and serial litigator whose lifetime of adventures took him from the legal tangle surrounding the estate of Howard Hughes to involvement in a colossal fraud case that threatened to bring down one of the biggest shareholder class-action law firms in the United States, died on March 30 at his home in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 88. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Tara Lazar.

The Los Angeles Police Department has opened a criminal investigation of the actor. LAPD Officer Mike Lopez told Page Six that “on March 31, at about 7:45 a.m.,” officers visited Sheen’s home as part of a criminal investigation in which Sheen was listed as a suspect. Lopez said that the victim’s information is confidential and that it’s “an ongoing investigation.” And there’s been a search warrant issued in the case.
