*IN-FIGHTING –  Schumer Rips Hillary: Don’t Blame Comey or Russia, ‘Blame Yourself’

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer ripped his former colleague, Hillary Clinton, over her election loss to PresidentDonald Trump and her subsequent efforts to explain why she lost. “When you lose to somebody who has 40 percent popularity, you don’t blame other things—Comey, Russia—you blame yourself,” Schumer told The Washington Post. “So what did we do wrong? People didn’t know what we stood for, just that we were against Trump. And still believe that.” Schumer’s comments—referring to Clinton blaming Russian meddling and the former FBI director for her loss to Trump—come as Democrats are trying to re-brand ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. Democrats unveiled their new slogan as, “A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future.”

*TEXAS HOLD ’EM – Rookie Wins $8.1 Million in World Series of Poker
Scott Blumstein of New Jersey won this year’s World Series of Poker championship in Las Vegas, defeating Pennsylvania’sDaniel Ott to win $8.1 million. The final table reached 246 hands, and Blumstein and Ott went head-to-head on more than 60 of them. “I’m really happy with the result, really happy with the deuce because I was playing good, but I’m pretty tired of poker at this point honestly, and to have to go back and battle pretty deep again, I wasn’t looking forward to it,” said Blumstein, 25. Ott came away with a $4.7 million award. Both men had never played at the main event before this year.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Lizzie Crocker: In this week’s “Dear Polly” advice column in The Cut, a 27-year-old woman writes about how she feels excluded and rejected by a group of longtime girlfriends–not in person so much as in their online communications.  They don’t “like” her Facebook posts and photos with the same enthusiasm as frequency as they do each other’s. Her phone buzzes constantly with their gushing group WhatsApp chats, yet whenever she chimes in they ignore her contributions.  “It sounds like a high school problem,” she writes, “but I pick up bad vibes and feel like they don’t like me…It seems unhealthy. Especially bad since they are old friends.”  And yes, it does sound like a high school problem–like a scene from a Mean Girls sequel set in our digital times. But the dynamics of female friend groups and odd-girl-out syndrome don’t disappear after high school, and communicating in group texts or through messaging apps has added new layers of complexity to traditional female friendship dynamics.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Maureen Dowd: President Trumphas finally found a courtier who can give him the buttery, boundless respect he craves. A wealthy mini-me Manhattan bro with wolfy smile and slick coif who will say anything and flip any position. A self-promoter extraordinaire and master salesman who doesn’t mind pushing a bad product — and probably sees it as more fun. For ego gratification, Trump has struck gold — or Goldman Sachs — with his appointment of Wall Street hedge fund guy and cable TV diva Anthony Scaramucci as White House communications director. The Mogul and the Mooch is a tender love story with dramatic implications for the imploding White House.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Marc Luzzatto (Santa Monica Business Owner): I read the payroll record for Santa Monica city employees. I didn’t scroll down all the way but I don”t think anyone makes less than $100,000 per year including benefits. And the vast majority make well above that.  It’s telling that the title “Motor Coach Operator” (ahem, bus driver) makes $162,000 per year including benefits. Anyone want to guess why we can’t house and feed our homeless? Or provide good health care to all? Governments have totally lost touch with what is reasonable compensation.  Many firefighters are well into the $200k and $300k salary ranges. Meanwhile I know general practitioners who don’t make anywhere near that amount of money and have to pay expensive malpractice premiums and have invested a LOT more in years of education than “motor coach operators”.  No wonder Santa Monica has an obscenely high sales tax rate–the most regressive tax there is. When you extrapolate this insanity to all state and local governments you start to understand why our infrastructure is failing, why our universities have to charge students so much tuition, why our cable bills are loaded with taxes and surcharges, etc etc.

*LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Jimmy Kimmel‘s happy update on the condition of his son also served as a call to action. “Billy is 3 months old & doing great. Thx for the love & support,” the late night host along wrote Friday along with a picture of the smiling baby. “Please remind your Congresspeople that every kid deserves the care he got.” Billy was born in April with a heart disease which Kimmel revealed in an emotional monologue a few days after the baby recovered from an emergency open-heart surgery.
