LBN- Special Report- Saturday

*Dallas Shooter Sent Home From Afghanistan After Sexual Harassment Allegation:
Micah Johnson, the man who opened fire on police officers Thursday night in Dallas, was sent home from Afghanistan after an alleged sexual harassment claim. The May 2014 accusation from a female soldier led to an Army recommendation of an “other than honorable discharge,” according to the military lawyer who represented Johnson. The alleged victim said in a court filing that she wished Johnson would “receive mental help.” Johnson, 25, served in the U.S. Army Reserves and sympathized with black militant groups. He killed five police officers and injured seven others at the conclusion of a Black Lives Matter protest.

*Obama’s Delicate Balance on Issue of Race and Policing:
As Air Force One headed for Europe on Thursday afternoon, President Obama holed up in the plane’s office editing a Facebook post meant to express his anguish at two deadly shootings by police officers. Given what had happened, he told his aides, he didn’t think it was enough. Wrestling with what the appropriate thing to do instead was the start of a wrenching 10 hours in which Mr. Obama would find himself whipsawed by grim events back home, forcing him to once again search for the right tone in a moment of national shock and mourning. In that time, Mr. Obama delivered a trans-Atlantic call for racial justice after the gruesome deaths of two black men at the hands of the police, only to face the same television cameras hours later to denounce the killings of five officers by a black sniper.

*North Korea Tests Submarine-Based Ballistic Missile:
North Korea test-fired a submarine-based ballistic missile on Saturday, South Korea said, denouncing the DPRK’s action as “provocative behavior.” U.S. Strategic Command confirmed the launch, which occurred “off the coast of Sinpo,” a city in the country’s east. While the launch itself was deemed a success, South Korea said the early stages were less so. The incident comes just a day after the south and the U.S. agreed to set up a defense mechanism that would intercept North Korea’s missiles. South Korea calls it a “defensive measure.”

*Police Find Weapons, Bomb-Making Materials at Dallas Shooter’s Home:
An investigation of Dallas shooter Micah Johnson’s home revealed a stash of weapons, including “bomb making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics,” Dallas police officials announced Friday. In their public report, detectives noted that Johnson’s associates described him as a loner, and that he had liked the Facebook pages for the Afrocentric writer Professor Griff. Police also confirmed that at least 12 officers fired their weapons during the deadly attack.

*Jill Stein to Bernie: You Can Replace Me as Green Party Candidate:

Jill Stein, the Green Party’s presidential candidate, is reaching out to Bernie Sanders in an unusual way. In an interviewFriday with The Guardian, Stein said the democratic socialist should replace her at the top of the party’s ticket. Claiming an “overwhelming” number of former Sanders voters are finding a new home in the Green Party, Stein says “everything is on the table” for potential collaboration. “If he saw that you can’t have a revolutionary campaign in a counter-revolutionary party, he’d be welcomed to the Green Party,” Stein said. “He could lead the ticket and build a political movement.” After reaching out to Sanders via email at the end of the primary, Stein has not yet received a response. Her push comes as Sanders is rumored to be offering his endorsement of Hillary Clinton next week on the campaign trail.

*LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***On Friday, Facebook said it would also begin testing “secret conversations” inside Messenger, a feature that offers end-to-end encryption on some messages to be read only on the two mobile devices that users are communicating with. While it stops short of the full encryption that other messaging services like WhatsApp have adopted, it gives Messenger a heightened mode of security that Facebook hopes will attract global audiences to download the app.“The fact that we have 1.65 billion people on Facebook already makes Messenger the best live, self-updating address book in the world,” Mr. Marcus said in an interview. “Because of the scale of our network, I feel like we really have a shot at this.”

Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans Exhibition Opens (1962)
One of the most influential artists of the late 20th century, Warhol began painting in the late 1950s and received sudden notoriety in 1962, when he exhibited 32 silkscreened paintings of Campbell’s soup cans in a California art gallery. The blatantly mundane content of the exhibition ran contrary to the abstract expressionist aesthetic of the time and generated much controversy, establishing Warhol as the leading exponent of the pop art movement.

*LBN-SPOTLIGHT: Are You A Brand?

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Tony Medley: LBN claims that “it’s now widely believed Mary Surratt was not a party to the Lincoln Assassination plans.” Believed by whom? It tries common sense to think that all the conspirators could meet at her boarding house with her son so many times without her knowing that something was going on. Further, the entire Surratt family was well known as Confederate sympathizers. Son John was a courier for the Confederate Secret Service, moving messages, cash, and contraband back and forth across enemy lines. The evidence produced at her trial showed that on April 11, just three days before the assassination, Mary Surratt rented a carriage and drove to the Surratt tavern in Surrattsville, Maryland (now known as Clinton). Her tenant, John Lloyd, said Surratt told him to get the “shooting irons” (rifles two of the conspirators had hidden at the Surratt Tavern) ready to be picked up.
