*GROSS – The deadly reason why you shouldn’t let dogs lick your face

Affectionate dog owners are at risk of catching a potentially deadly disease. While the man’s best friend are great at cheering their owners up when they’re down, they may be responsible for threatening the life of their keeper. An expert completely dismissed the myth that a dog’s mouth is much cleaner than a human’s. Dog expert Marty Becker said: “All you have to do is look, watch, smell and you’ll realize that is not true. “They raid the garbage can. You know, we give each other a peck on the cheek when we say hello, they give each other a peck on the rear end.” The friendly animals who love to lick faces can and do carry a long list of bacteria which can severely impact human health. John Oxford, professor of virology and bacteriology at the Queen Mary University in London, explained how the beautiful creatures get bacteria in the first place. He said: “It is not just what is carried in saliva. “Dogs spend half their life with their noses in nasty corners or hovering over dog droppings so their muzzles are full of bacteria, viruses and germs of all sorts.” The strong bacteria have the power to cause a range of dangerous diseases, some deadly. Capnocytophaga Canimorsus is a bacteria that lives in a dog’s saliva.

*Putin’s Bet on a Trump Presidency Backfires Spectacularly

A little more than a year after the Russian effort to interfere in the American presidential election came to light, the diplomatic fallout — an unraveling of the relationship between Moscow and Washington on a scale not seen in decades — is taking its toll. President Vladimir V. Putin bet that Donald J. Trump, who had spoken fondly of Russia and its authoritarian leader for years, would treat his nation as Mr. Putin has longed to have it treated by the West. That is, as the superpower it once was, or at least a major force to be reckoned with, from Syria to Europe, and boasting a military revived after two decades of neglect. That bet has now backfired, spectacularly. If the sanctions overwhelmingly passed by Congress last week sent any message to Moscow, it was that Mr. Trump’s hands are now tied in dealing with Moscow, probably for years to come.

*Apple Removes VPN Apps in China

Apple removed multiple virtual private network services from its App Store in China over the weekend, a move that some say illustrates Beijing doubling down on its internet censorship. VPNs are often used in countries like China and Russia to circumvent government firewalls and surveillance. “China’s (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) announced that all developers offering VPNs must obtain a license from the government,” said an Apple spokesperson. “We have been required to remove some VPN apps in China that do not meet the new regulations.” Multiple service providers expressed concerns about the decision. Star VPN said the move is a “dangerous precedent.” Another, ExpressVPN, said it “represents the most drastic measure the Chinese government has taken to block the use of VPNs to date, and we are troubled to see Apple aiding China’s censorship efforts.” American whistleblower Edward Snowden also tweeted about the decision. “Apple has done much good for privacy and security in recent years, but actively assisting censorship crosses the red line of human rights,” he wrote.

*THE HUNT – Raids Across Sydney After ‘Advanced’ Plot Foiled to Down Plane

Australian investigators raided multiple Sydney properties on Sunday and Monday after they reportedly foiled a complex terrorist plot to bring down an airplane. Four men were arrested in the case, and at least five locations have been searched. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said the plot was an attempt to put a device onto an aircraft. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called the plan “advanced,” but declined to comment further.

**LBN-INVESTIGATES: A slew of reports finds a fresh reason for the chronic inability of American companies to fill skilled jobs: not a lack of skills, and hence a training-and-education crisis, but a surfeit of drug abuse. Simply put, prime-working age Americans without a college diploma are often too drugged-out to get the best jobs. Opioids remain at high levels, but the surge in drug use is now heroin and the powerful contaminant fentanyl.

*Ravens Owner: Protests Are a Factor in Considering Signing Colin Kaepernick

Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said Sunday he is considering non-football factors when deciding whether to add controversial quarterback Colin Kaepernick to the team. Kaepernick famously kneeled last year during the playing of the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial injustice and declared free agency after the season ended. Though Kaepernick committed to standing during the anthem in 2017, Bisciotti admitted his past actions and their effect on the Ravens’ “brand” will factor into his decision. NFL CommissionerRoger Goodell, who was present at the forum, has previously insisted player decisions are made only on game performance.

*BLINDSIDED – Ivanka Trump Learned of Transgender Military Ban on Twitter

White House aides on Sunday said that Ivanka Trump andJared Kushner were shocked by President Donald Trump’stweet announcing his plans to ban transgender individuals from serving in the military, and had been unaware of the president’s decision beforehand, Politico reports. The couple—both New Yorkers and longtime Democratic donors, as is the president—had been viewed by progressives as potential bulwarks against Vice President Mike Pence’s social conservatism, but six months into the administration have yet to stymie most items on his agenda.

*Sage Advice From the ‘Gold Standard’ of White House Chiefs of Staff

When a new White House chief of staff takes over, the smart ones check in with James A. Baker III, the only man to have occupied the office two different times for two different presidents and who is widely considered to be the gold standard. Mr. Baker has plenty of advice from running the White House during Ronald Reagan’s first term and again at the end of George Bush’s presidency, but it usually boils down to this: “You can focus on the ‘chief,’ or you can focus on the ‘of staff.’ Those who have focused on the ‘of staff’ have done pretty well.”

*O.J. Simpson’s children went on a real estate spending spree

O.J. Simpson’s children have gone on a real-estate spending spree over the past two years — and the families of murder victims Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman want to know where they got all the dough. Sydney Simpson, 31, and her brother Justin, 28, have built a mini-real estate empire in St. Petersburg, Fla., scooping up 13 properties since 2015, according to documents reviewed by sources. The homes and apartments are in low-income areas and total about $500,000. All but two appear to have been bought with cash. Where the kids got the money for the properties could lead to a legal battle between O.J. Simpson and the families of Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson, who was the former football great’s ex-wife and is the children’s mother.

*LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:  ***Discovery Communications announced on Monday an $11.9 billion deal to buy Scripps Networks Interactive, the owner of Food Network and HGTV. The combined company would control about 20 percent of the advertising-supported pay-television audience in the United States, and it could create a force in television popular with female viewers, bringing together the Scripps channels and Discovery offerings including Investigation Discovery, OWN and TLC.   ***A federal judge has ordered the Federal Aviation Administration to review seat sizes and legroom on commercial airlines. It’s a victory for Flyers’ Rights, an advocacy group that has pushed for new rules regulating seat sizes. Flyers’ Rights says small airlines seats can put people’s health at risk with conditions like blood clots in legs.

*WEIRDO – Teen accepts dare to put a hammer in mouth – and it gets stuck

The mom of a teenage girl who got a hammer stuck in her mouth has had to “hide the toolbox” after her daughter’s dare went viral on Twitter. Kaley, 14, from Louisiana, USA, was challenged by a pal to put the hammer head in her mouth and uploaded pictures to social media after it got stuck. The teen had been fangirling over members of Korean boy band BTS when she described one of them as “so beautiful I could shove a hammer in my mouth.” After her friend egged her on to do it, the tool became lodged behind her lips and she posted a hilarious image online with the caption: “how do u tell ur mom that u got a hammer stuck in ur mouth.” “It was a little too big to fit in my mouth in the first place, but getting it out was even more of a problem,” Kayley told Buzzfeed News. Luckily, after 10 minutes of yanking, the hammer came free.

*LBN-OVERHEARD:   **Michael Moore made his Broadway debut to a sold-out crowd at the first preview of his new one-man show, “The Terms of My Surrender” over the weekend. According to a spy, “he actually sings [well!] and dances [not so well]” in the performance, which ran two hours. There were guest flybys from comedian Judah Friedlander, who agreed to be Moore’s running mate if he chooses to run in 2020, and documentarian Morgan Spurlock. There was also plenty of Trumpbashing, but Moore saved his most scathing words for Rick Snyder, the Michigan governor whom Moore blames for the ongoing water crisis in his hometown of Flint.
