MURDOCH HITS GOOGLE WITH LEGAL COMPLAINT

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp filed a formal complaint against Google with the European Union, arguing that the tech giant maintains its own dominance in news searches by copying competitors’ Web content. News Corp asserted that Google copies from publishers to display results. If publishers say they don’t want their content copied, Google reportedly just doesn’t show their article in results at all. The European Commission is also independently investigating allegations that Google copies rival Web content, known in the industry as “scraping.”

Defense Secretary in Iraq for ISIS Talks

Defense Secretary Ash Carter traveled to Baghdad on Monday to meet with Iraqi leaders on retaking the city of Mosul from ISIS militants. Carter is expected to meet with Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, the top U.S. military commander in the fight against ISIS, as well Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi. A senior U.S. official told the AP assisting Iraq would likely involve a “small number” of additional American forces in the warzone. Any finalized decision on putting more U.S. forces in Iraq would be worked out with the Iraqi government and require President Barack Obama’s approval. Obama is scheduled to arrive in Saudi Arabia later this week to meet with Gulf leaders about the fight against ISIS.
Amber Heard Pleads Guilty in Dog Trial
The wife of Johnny Depp, actress Amber Heard, pleaded guilty Monday to falsifying quarantine documents after allegations she smuggled her two Yorkshire Terriers, Pistol and Boo, into Australia while visiting last year. Prosecutors dropped two charges of illegally importing an animal. Heard’s lawyer said his client made a “terrible mistake” and thought the dogs’ travel forms had been handled by Depp’s staff, adding that she did not try to deceive authorities. The 29-year-old and her husband, who were present for Monday’s hearing, appeared in a minute-long apology video that was played before the packed courtroom. The couple visited last year while Depp was filming the fifth installation of Pirates of the Caribbean.

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***A survey has found that tens of thousands of voters, including Demi Moore and other celebrities, have mistakenly registered as members of a conservative minor political party in California in a mix-up over its name, a newspaper reported Sunday. The Los Angeles Times said that a telephone survey of 500 members of the American Independent Party found nearly 3 of 4 people did not realize they had enrolled in a political party that opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage and calls for building a fence along the U.S. border.   ***There may be a wedding on “Empire” this season, but two of the show’s stars just said “I do” without the cameras rolling. On Thursday, Trai Byers and Grace Gealey tied the knot in a private ceremony in a mansion on Grand Cayman Island. The couple celebrated with about 50 of their closest family and friends, which didn’t include their “Empire” co-stars.   ***Jason Bateman got an unexpected surprise at a bash for the new film he directed, “The Family Fang,” after its Tribeca premiere on Saturday. “A waitress holding a tray of about 10 drinks walked over to Jason and two other guests to offer them drinks and tripped,” said a spy at an after-party for the film. “The entire tray dumped over on him. She didn’t immediately realize who he was until he started helping her pick everything up. She turned bright red and was so embarrassed.”
