LBN- Special Report- Friday

*France’s High Court Suspends Burkini Ban:
The highest administrative court in France has suspended a controversial ban on “burkinis” in a test case brought by human-rights organizations. The halt—applicable only in the southern town of Villeneuve-Loubet, near Nice—is still pending a definitive ruling, but temporary judgments in France’s legal system are often handed down if a court elects to take more time to prepare a final ruling. The ban on the full-body swimwear for strictly observing Muslim women has received international criticism. Lawyers for human-rights groups argued the ban not only infringes on the freedom of those wearing them, they also feed fear in French communities. Officials say the suspension will likely set the precedent for other areas seeking to prohibit burkinis via mayoral decrees. The bans were popularized following multiple attacks in France, including the Bastille Day truck attack in Nice.

*U.S. Navy Ship Fires Warning Shots at Iranian Vessel:
In the most serious yet of a recent string of run-ins, a U.S. Navy patrol ship is reported to have fired warning shots Wednesday at an Iranian “fast-attack” vessel that approached two American crafts in the Persian Gulf. A Pentagon official said the USS Squall fired three warning shots from a .50 caliber gun after the Iranian vessel came within 200 yards of the U.S. ship—and ignored a series of warning flares. “They did feel compelled ultimately to fire three warning shots,” said Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook. “They had taken steps already to try and de-escalate this situation.” Earlier this week, the Pentagon accused Iranian vessels of harassing a U.S. warship near the Strait of Hormuz. The Squall incident came a day before Iran’s defense minister warned of increased confrontations with American ships entering Iran’s maritime region.

*Maine Governor Calls Dem ‘C**ksucker’:

Paul LePage, the Republican governor of Maine, called a Democratic lawmaker a “cocksucker” in a profane voicemail he left Thursday. Rep. Drew Gattine criticized LePage’s previous comments that laid all the blame for illegal drugs on black people, but denied calling him a racist. LePage didn’t buy it. “Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage,” the voicemail obtained by the Portland Press Herald began. “I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you cocksucker. I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I’m a racist. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist cocksucker. You… I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.”

*CNN Cancels ‘Dr. Drew’ After Hil Claims:
CNN has canceled Drew Pinsky’s HLN show, Dr. Drew On Call, just eight days after Pinsky made comments on a radio show questioning the health of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Pinsky’s show, which is six years old, will air for the last time Sept. 22. Mirroring concerns voiced by Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani, Pinsky said on a program aired Aug. 17 that he was “gravely concerned not just about her health, but her health care.” A July 2015 letter from Dr. Lisa Bardack—who has treated Clinton—concluded that she “is in excellent physical condition and fit to serve as president of the United States.” But Pinsky’s reading of the Bardack letter disagreed with that assessment, and he shared his own on the radio show. CNN Executive Vice President Ken Jautz said in a statement that he and Pinsky “mutually agreed” on the cancellation, but Jautz gave no reason for it. In January, Pinsky previously incorrectly reported, based on a “strong source,” that Clinton had a “flareup of problems from” a “brain injury.” In reality, the former secretary of State had only actually visited a restroom. Pinsky cited a Breitbart News story in his telling of the event. He later apologized for violating “HLN and CNN’s editorial standards.” He added, “I regret the error and will make sure, in the future, to apply the rigorous editorial standards we have in place here. I apologize to our viewers and Secretary Clinton for falling short tonight.”

*LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***Janet L. Yellen, the Federal Reserve chairwoman, said on Friday that she saw a stronger case for raising the Fed’s benchmark interest rate, suggesting the central bank was likely to act in the coming months. “In light of the continued solid performance of the labor market and our outlook for economic activity and inflation, I believe the case for an increase in the federal funds rate has strengthened in recent months,” Ms. Yellen said.

*LBN-MUSIC INSIDER:   ***Hans Zimmer has received more than just a win in a copyright infringement case — he also received an apology from a fellow composer who now says he mistakenly sued the Oscar-winner over the music to “12 Years a Slave.” Richard Friedman sued Zimmer for copyright infringement in January 2015 over the film’s music, but he now says he never should have brought the case. Friedman wrote a letter to Zimmer saying he deeply regrets filing the lawsuit.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by David Brooks: Lately I’ve been thinking about experience. Donald Trump lacks political experience, and the ineptitude caused by his inexperience is evident every day. On the other hand, Hillary Clinton is nothing if not experienced. Her ship is running smoothly, and yet as her reaction to the email scandal shows once again, there’s often a whiff of inhumanity about her campaign that inspires distrust. So I’ve been thinking that it’s not enough to be experienced. The people in public life we really admire turn experience into graciousness. Those people, I think, see their years as humbling agents. They see that, more often than not, the events in our lives are perfectly designed to lay bare our chronic weaknesses and expose some great whopping new ones. Sooner or later life teaches you that you’re not the center of the universe, nor quite as talented or good as you thought. It teaches you to care less about what others think and, less self-conscious, to get out of your own way.

*LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Jennifer Lopez and boy-toy Casper Smart have broken up — putting an actual end to the relationship with an 18-year age difference! J.Lo had moved right on to Casper after her split from husband Marc Anthony, with the couple hooking up as early as 2011. That included a humiliating stint where Casper had to stay off to the side whileJennifer “dated” actor Ryan Guzman to promote their 2015 thriller “The Boy Next Door.”   ***Cue the sad violin: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has split with his violinist girlfriend Gabi Holzwarth, sources say. The 40-year-old tech billionaire was dating the beautiful, talented street violinist, 26, for nearly two years, but sources say they recently broke up due to mounting pressures of his work. Losses are continuing to grow at ride-hailing juggernaut Uber, which reportedly lost $1.2 billion in the first half of 2016 alone, mainly due to losses in China.
