AL QAEDA NO. 2 CALLS OBAMA RACIAL EPITHET: Al-Qaida’s No. 2 leader used a racial epithet to insult Barack Obama in a message posted Wednesday, describing the president-elect in demeaning terms that imply he does the bidding of whites. The message appeared chiefly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies. Ayman al-Zawahri said in the message, which appeared on militant Web sites, that Obama is “the direct opposite of honorable black Americans” like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader. In al-Qaida’s first response to Obama’s victory, al-Zawahri also called the president-elect _ along with secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice _ “house negroes.”

TOP LEGAL JOB: A source close to the process of selecting Barack Obama*’s attorney general says the president-elect has “informally” offered the post to Washington lawyer Eric Holder, who has accepted.The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because no announcement has been made. He said that Holder has “informally” accepted the offer, pending completion of the vetting process.

NATALEE HOLLOWAY: NEW WITNESS EMERGES IN CASE OF MISSING TEEN: A new witness has come forward in the 2005 disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, and prosecutors said Tuesday they are seeking more evidence against the only remaining suspect.A woman told Dutch police this month that Joran van der Sloot confessed to her years ago that he was involved in Holloway’s disappearance, according to Ann Angela, a spokeswoman for the Aruba Prosecutors’ Office.

MOTHER-OF-TWO BECOMES FIRST TRANSPLANT PATIENT TO RECEIVE AN ORGAN GROWN TO ORDER IN A LABORATORY: A 30-year-old Spanish woman has made medical history by becoming the first patient to receive a whole organ transplant grown using her own cells. Experts said the development opened a new era in surgery in which the repair of worn-out body parts would be carried out with personally customized replacements. Claudia Castillo, who lives in Barcelona, underwent the operation to replace her windpipe after tuberculosis had left her with a collapsed lung and unable to breathe. The bioengineered organ was transplanted into her chest last June at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona.

RAUL CASTRO TO VISIT VENEZUELA ON 1ST TRIP CHAVEZ: Cuban President Raul Castro will soon visit Venezuela, the communist-run island’s main trade partner, on his first oversees trip since assuming power from his brother Fidel Castro. Socialist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who supplies Cuba with cheap oil and calls Fidel Castro his mentor, said on Tuesday Raul Castro would visit the OPEC nation in the next few days, symbolizing the nation’s close ties.

SOARING COSTS FOR INAUGURATION COULD BREAK THE BANK FOR D.C.: Soaring costs expected to accompany huge crowds in town for the Jan. 20 inauguration of Barack Obama could stick cash-strapped Washington, D.C., with a record-breaking bill for services. Security and capacity measures recommended by the Districts congressional delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and others will almost certainly surpass the $15 million the federal government gives to the District each year to defray the cost of events, Norton said.

LBN-SPORTS NEWS: ***Red Sox second basemen Dustin Pedroia added to his ever-expanding trophy case Tuesday, becoming the first second baseman to earn the honor in nearly a half-century. Pedroia was the fourth second baseman to win the AL MVP award, along with Fox, Joe Gordon (1942) and Charlie Gehringer (1937). Earlier this month, Pedroia took home the Gold Glove and he was the 2007 AL Rookie of the Year and capped off that season with a World Series ring. ***The Los Angeles Lakers went to their inside game against the smaller Chicago Bulls and the strategy worked to perfection. The Lakers scored 64 points in the paint, with Gasol shooting 14-of-21 and Bynum going 5-of-10, Kobe Bryant was able to contribute 21 points as well. The Lakers ended the night with a 116 to 109 win over the Bulls.

LBN-BUSINESS NEWS: ***According to the Labor Department’s Consumer Price Index, consumer prices plunged by the largest amount in the past 61 years in October as gasoline pump prices dropped by a record amount. While lower prices might be good for the consumer, they can hurt corporate profits. Lower prices also raise the threat of deflation, a prolonged bout of falling prices. Stocks have been trading erratically for several weeks as investors try to gauge the direction of the economy. Analysts expect the volatility to continue for some time while the market recovers from the steep losses logged in October. ***Wall Street turned sharply lower Wednesday, as a bailout of Detroit’s Big Three automakers appeared stalled on Capitol Hill, and another round of downbeat economic news further disheartened investors. The Dow Jones industrials fell more than 200 points. The heads of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC are asking lawmakers for a massive infusion of cash to prevent millions of layoffs, stave off bankruptcy and stabilize the companies. Congressional Democrats have proposed using part of the $700 billion financial bailout package to pump into the ailing auto industry, but Republicans oppose such an approach.

LBN-BOOK NEWS: ***President Elect Barack Obama said that he was actually referring to two books in his first interview on 60 Minutes on Sunday. He mentioned having read a new book out about F .D. R.s first 100 days without specifically naming a title or author. The two books were Jonathan Alters “The Defining Moment” and F D R by Jean Edward Smith, a biography published last year by Random House that cover far more than the first 100 days. But The Defining Moment was published by Simon & Schuster in 2006, and the paperback edition came out last year. Given that Mr. Obama referred to a new book on Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 60 Minutes interview, Mr. Alters work didnt appear to meet that criterion. Mr. Alter said that Mr. Obama was literate enough that hes probably reading more than one book about that period. After learning that his book was, in fact, one of the titles referred to by Mr. Obama, Mr. Alter said: Its just nice that were going to have a president that has a strong sense of history. *** It can reasonably be said that A Dance to the Music of Time, Anthony Powells monumental 12-part novel about English manners, society, politics and power, still begs for an American counterpart. Lush and majestic, the book traces the years from 1921 to 1974 pretty much the period we like to romanticize as the American century. But if no novel over here quite tracks Powells course, the life of George Ames Plimpton, impressively recorded in this glorious new biography, George, Being George, offers a potential substitute. Powell, in his novel, describes four types of men: the artist, the romantic, the man of will and the cynic.

FDA OPENS FIRST OFFICE IN CHINA FOR INSPECTIONS: Workers will pre-certify imports coming into the U.S. from China: U.S. officials opened the first overseas Food and Drug Administration office in Beijing on Wednesday as they gear up for a long battle to ensure the quality of food, drug and feed imports from China. The eight FDA workers in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou will set up a process for pre-certifying and inspecting imports from China, which has hundreds of thousands of food processors and drug manufacturers.

LBN-COMMENTARY By MIKE MEDAVOY: Whos to blame for the current economic recession? I dont think it is helpful to place or find blame or who is to blame for the economic reason. There is plenty of time to do that once we get out of it. My sense is that the problems are systemic; uncontrollable growth to those few who were able to figure out how to make money without the regulations that protect investors, mortgage holders, complex instruments that I dont think anybody understood certainly not laypeople. Moreover, these have occurred alongside intertwining global implications and credit swaps in an era of globalization with repercussions where middle men took few risks and got their money off the top. Its a game where a few got rich and a large group got their safety mats pulled out from underneath them. Now we need to take bolder action to get out of a deep hole. Saving the auto industry is a matter of national security. Its one of the few industries that easily convert to defense. Remember World War Two. Why are Republicans opposing it? I cant figure it out. Im not suggesting a blank check, but bold action is required. It also wouldnt hurt to have a leader who inspired confidence. Lets all pray and hope that is Barack Obama and do our part. We had long years of promise to take care of our educational system, our health care, our energy and environment. Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg first united on the World War II epics “Flags of our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima,” which Eastwood directed and Spielberg’s DreamWorks co-produced. Now, according to Variety, they are possibly joining forces on the supernatural thriller “Hereafter.” The film is penned by the acclaimed screenwriter and playwright Peter Morgan (the upcoming “Frost/Nixon“). *** Longtime friends, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio had been looking to work together again for years, but wavered over finding an appropriate picture to follow up a cultural landmark such as “Titanic.” But Winslet sent DiCaprio the screenplay, and he admits that he immediately fell in love with it, even though he found his philandering character, Frank, “detestable.” DiCaprio explains, saying, “There is this element to him that’s entirely sympathetic, because here he is in this environment trying to make his relationship work. He’s doing the only thing a man should be doing: trying to protect his home nest, his family, and do the right thing.” Revolutionary Road opens in limited release on Dec. 26.

LBN-HEALTH INSIDER: *** The dietary supplement beta-alanine (BA) — widely used by athletes and body builders — improves muscle endurance in the elderly, according to U.S. researchers.The finding “could have importance in the prevention of falls, and the maintenance of health and independent living in elderly men and women,” said study author Jeffrey Stout of the University of Oklahoma.BA is an amino acid that helps form carnosine, which plays a major role in normal muscle function during intense exercise. The more BA, the higher carnosine levels in muscles, the researchers said. They found a 67 percent improvement in the fitness levels of those who took BA, compared to a 21.5 percent improvement in the placebo group. The study was published online this month in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. *** Bickering parents and poor caregiver relationships each increase levels of the stress hormone cortisol in children, new studies say.The two studies, published in the November/December issue of Child Development, show the biological effects stress has on children in these common situations. Long-term or frequent rises in cortisol can have negative health consequences. Research with animals and people suggest that secure relationships help prevent cortisol rises in children confronted with stress. The authors suggested that the study could affect future policy and practice. They said physiological measures like cortisol levels may help determine how well intervention programs are doing as well as the common practice of looking for improvements in how children function psychologically. *** Gleevec, a wonder drug that effectively treats leukemia and other cancers, may also reverse type 1 diabetes, University of California San Francisco, researchers report.In experiments with mice, they found that Gleevec and a similar cancer drug, Sutent, could prevent the onset of type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and is caused by the inability of the body to make insulin.

Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter tells us they believe the prescription medications found in her system “could have impaired her ability to safely drive a motor vehicle.” Locklear was busted September 27.
