LBN-INVESTIGATES: The oldest living things on Earth are believed to be single-cell prokaryotes, more commonly known as bacteria. Scientists have discovered fossils of such prokaryotes from roughly 3.5 billion years ago.

SLOW PROGRESS: In an interview on “This Week,” CIA Director Leon Panetta said that making progress in Afghanistan is both “harder” and going more slowly than anticipated. “There are some serious problems” in Afghanistan, Panetta said. “We’re dealing with tribal societies. We’re dealing with a country that has problems with governance, problems with corruption, problems with narcotics trafficking, problems with a Taliban insurgency,” he said.

TROPICAL STORM SET TO MISS GULF COAST: For the time being at least, it looks like Tropical Storm Alex will not be getting in the way of the Gulf Coast cleanup. It is expected to weaken early on Sunday over Central America before regaining strength during the evening over the Gulf of Mexico—where it could turn into a hurricane—but will pass far south and west of the blown-out oil well and the shores where oil has been washing up for several weeks. Meteorologists believe Alex will make landfall somewhere on the Mexican Gulf coast in the middle of the week, but warn that its path could yet change.

ADM. MULLEN MEETS WITH KARZAI: During a 45-minute meeting with President Karzai, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen assured the Afghan leader that newly installed Gen. David Petraeus will stick to the game plan established by ousted Gen. Stanley McChrystal. Mullen emphasized Petraeus’ early involvement in Afghan military issues and policies. McChrystal’s restrictions on fighting, imposed on NATO troops a year ago, have been credited with saving civilian lives, but some troops believe the rules cost American lives. All rules will remain in effect for now, but the spokesman pointed out that it remains to be seen what Petraeus will do. “Gen. Petraeus, as any new commander, has the right when he comes in to review those rules of engagement and may recommend changes to them as he sees fit. But we have no indication right now that he has any intention of changing anything.”

N. KOREA POWER TRANSFER IMMINENT?: North Korea’s state news media announced that in September a rare meeting will be held to determine government leadership. The transfer of power has been a source of speculation since current leader Kim Jong Il, 68, reportedly suffered a stroke two years ago. It’s expected that Pyongyang will name Kim Jong Il’s third son, Kim Jong Un, as successor. Not much is known about him; even his age is uncertain, although he’s thought to be 27 years old. As North Korea struggles with a failing economy, a famine, and the international upset caused by their sinking of a South Korean warship, in addition to Jong Un’s lack of credentials, some are concerned for the region’s stability.

BABY KILLED BY FALLING TREE BRANCH: A 6-month-old child was killed today at New York City’s Central Park Zoo, the victim of a falling tree branch. The baby’s mother was also severely injured in the accident, and is currently in serious condition at Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Upper East Side. This is the second death from a falling tree branch at the zoo this year. A snow-laden branch in the park fell on a man in February, and last July another man was hit and critically injured by a branch.

LBN-SPORTS INSIDER:   ***Few teams hate each other quite as much as the English and German national sides. Then again, few teams have two world wars to bring up every time they meet. For the past several days, ever since the pair realized they were going to play each other in the second round of the World Cup, the countries’ respective tabloids have taken shots across the North Sea, bringing up everything from previous meetings to the outcome of World War II—always with a wry sense of humor.     ***Germany played a masterful second half to dismantle England’s shoddy defense. England, outclassed and outplayed, will now go home, while the Germans now await the winner of this afternoon’s Argentina-Mexico game in the quarterfinal.

LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***Tom Cruise’s latest film, Knight & Day with Cameron Diaz, is drawing weak reviews and low ticket sales at the box office this weekend, leading many in Hollywood to wonder if the film signals the definitive end of the former superstar’s bankability. But while it’s true that Cruise has certainly lost much of the wattage that previously carried him through hit after hit, he’s still one of the best stars we’ve got, according to a spirited defense by The Chicago Tribune’s Christopher Borrelli.       ***Pernille Fischer Christensen’s “A Family” (En Familie), about a Danish family facing the death of its patriarch, was awarded the narrative award at the Los Angeles Film Festival, which handed out its jury prizes Saturday at a brunch at Chaya Downtown.     ***Judy Greer has joined the cast of “Mad Love,” finalizing CBS’ pickup of the midseason comedy.

LBN-THIS DAY IN HISTORY:   Latter-Day Saints Founder Joseph Smith Murdered (1844) Smith was the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints. He established his first church in New York but was forced to move his headquarters to Ohio, Missouri, and then Illinois. In 1844, he announced his candidacy for the presidency of the US, but he was imprisoned for treason after his efforts to silence Mormon dissenters led to mob violence.

MORE PROTEST IN TORONTO: Despite already making 180 arrests, Toronto police are preparing for even more protests Sunday outside the G-20 summit talks. The city’s chief of police noted that much of the violence—including four burned police cars—is coming from a small group of disruptors infiltrating a largely peaceful crowd. Still, the police dispatched pepper spray, tear gas, and bean bag pellets in attempts to diffuse the protesters. Meanwhile, inside the meetings, leaders plan to address the competing needs to nurse recovering economies and reduce large budget gaps.

PORN SITES COULD SOON GET THEIR “.XXX”: Porn sites could soon be swapping their .com for the sexier .xxx. On Friday, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers board of directors approved the new top-level domain — that’s the technical name for the .com, .xxx or .net part of a URL — and sent it on to the next committee. Porn sites could soon get their “.xxx”.  The final approval is still months away, the board approved the movement forward on .xxx. and now the ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee, an organization of 100 governments, must take up the issue and offer public policy advice on .xxx. The committee predicts this could become a reality by 2011.

LBN-COMMENTARY By MAUREEN DOWD: The great cosmic joke would be to find out definitively that the advances we thought were blessings — from the hormones women pump into their bodies all their lives to the fancy phones people wait in line for all night — are really time bombs.  Just as parents now tell their kids that, believe it or not, there was a time when nobody knew that cigarettes and tanning were bad for you, those kids may grow up to tell their kids that, believe it or not, there was a time when nobody knew how dangerous it was to hold your phone right next to your head and chat away for hours.

LBN-COMMENTARY By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN: Throughout most of their conflict, Arab and Israeli leaders have tended to oscillate between two, and only two, worldviews: I am weak; how can I compromise? I am strong; why should I compromise? Israel today is very much in the second mode.  For Israel, these are the best of times and the worst of times. Globally, the campaign to de-legitimize Israel has never been more virulent, while locally the beaches and restaurants of Tel Aviv have never been more crowded — as suicide-bombing and rockets from Gaza and Lebanon seem like a distant memory.

LBN-COMMENTARY By CAMILLE PAGLIA: Will women soon have a Viagra of their own? Although a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recently rejected an application to market the drug flibanserin in the United States for women with low libido, it endorsed the potential benefits and urged further research. Several pharmaceutical companies are reported to be well along in the search for such a drug.  The implication is that a new pill, despite its unforeseen side effects, is necessary to cure the sexual malaise that appears to have sunk over the country. But to what extent do these complaints about sexual apathy reflect a medical reality, and how much do they actually emanate from the anxious, overachieving, white upper middle class?

LBN-COMMENTARY By DOUG GILES: Obama fired General Stanley McChrystal for committing the unpardonable sin: He told the ugly truth about Obama.

LBN-COMMENTARY By KHOSHAL SADAT: I serve my country, Afghanistan, in uniform, as did my father and his father before him. I have known many military officers, but not one who better represents what soldiers stand for — honor, sacrifice and courage — than Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who until last week was the commander of American and NATO forces here. During my time as the general’s aide-de-camp, what struck me was how much he cared about what others thought and what they felt, even the most junior person in the room — which was, more often than not, me. We were frequently visited by some of the most important American and international leaders, and whenever they questioned the general about Afghanistan, he would always turn to me and say, “Let’s ask an Afghan.” I was so proud, as an Afghan, to serve under this General McChrystal.

LBN-COMMENTARY By SUSAN ESTRICH: Not long ago, a close friend called me with an unusual request. She and her husband were looking for a new doctor to take care of them. What made it unusual was that they’d had the same doctor for years — decades, actually. What happened to “J,” I asked. Did I miss something in my otherwise careful reading of the obits? Had he hung up his stethoscope? None of the above. Her husband had turned 65 and was now eligible for Medicare. Good news — except “J” is one of the increasing number of doctors who aren’t taking “n w” Medicare patients, or even old ones.

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart continued to play coy to the public about their relationship at the after-party for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” at the Thompson Beverly Hills Hotel. 2.  What Makes You Unique?  I am one of the few radio talk show hosts who is not a right-winger, or worse, a fake right-winger.

3.  If you could sleep with one celebrity, who would it be? Selma Hayek, of course.

4.  If you could have dinner with one dead person, who?  The author of “Brave New World” Aldous Huxley. Here was a man who was fearless. He understood the future and he was also a lover of Los Angeles, as I am.

5.  If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where and why? France, for two reasons: because I completely love France and, secondarily, because it pisses off so many people.

6.  Occupation: Radio talk show host and entrepreneur.

7.  What’s the best thing about your job? I break all the rules of my profession.

8.  Who would you want to be in another life? No one else. I have had and I continue to have such a great life.

9. Do you know anyone who’s had sex for money? Believe it or not, I did. When I was leaving New York for my first radio job, my father objected, so he refused to lend me $150 for five weeks until I got set up so, days before I was scheduled to leave, I got with a previous lover who had never wanted it to end and told her of my plight. She gave it to me in small bills in a motel room in Rego Park, Queens, New York. And then I spent the night with her. I really did NOT want to be there, but I needed the 150. My mom, who never knew this, said before she died that her biggest regret in life was not giving me the money. Only I knew the full story.

SATURDAY • JUNE 26, 2010
G-8 TO TAKE ON IRAN, NORTH KOREA: The G-8 will discuss what to do about North Korea and Iran in meetings this weekend in Toronto. Canada is seeking condemnation of North Korea for torpedoing a South Korean ship, killing 46 sailors. American officials will meet with leaders from South Korea Saturday, then Japan and China the following day, to talk about security in the region. Meanwhile, the G-20 met to discuss financial reform and the global economy. Leaders discussed the potentially conflicting goals of stimulating the economy and reducing debt. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said common ground could be found between sustainable growth and smart austerity measures. On Friday, the G-8 pledged $5 billion to improve maternal and child health in developing countries.

OBAMA PRAISES WALL STREET BILL: President Obama touted the new Wall Street reform bill as the “the toughest financial reforms since the Great Depression” in his weekly radio address Saturday. The address, promising new consumer protections that would guard against a crisis like the one that rocked the global economy in 2008, was recorded just hours after the House and Senate crafted the final version of the legislation. But ahead of the final vote on the bill, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky , said the reforms could stifle growth and does not address problems with “government-sponsored enterprises that were the root cause of the problem.” The House and Senate are due to vote next week and administration officials are hoping it will reach Obama’s desk by July 4. Will the president’s bill save us from another Wall Street meltdown? Unlikely, says The Daily Beast’s Charlie Gasparino—there are still plenty of loopholes in it for bankers to exploit.

379 KILLED IN CHINA: Floods in China have killed 379 people this year as of Saturday, and left 141 missing, the flood control authority said Saturday and the downpour is expected to continue for at least two more days. Officials are bracing for landslides as the heaviest rain is expected in provinces including Zhejiang , Jiangxi , Fujian , Guangdong , and Guangxi. The Chinese government is estimating the disaster will cost it $12.1 billion and force 4.5 million people out of their homes. This year, floods have affected 68.7 million people and soaked 11.9 million acres of fields growing crops.

DICK CHENEY ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL: Former Vice President Dick Cheney has been admitted to George Washington University Hospital due to unspecified discomfort. The 69-year-old conservative has a history of heart disease and surgery, including a bypass 22 years ago, which didn’t end the problem; Cheney suffered his fifth heart attack six months ago. Nine years ago, doctors installed a pacemaker, and just two years ago, he received an electric shock treatment to restore a normal rhythm to his heart. This time, Cheney simply reported some discomfort and has been admitted for the weekend to undergo testing.

ARIZONA’S IMMIGRATION LAW SPREADS: The sweeping and controversial policy  has already inspired lawmakers and candidates in at least 18 other states to push similar bills. Gubernatorial candidates in Florida and Minnesota and some lawmakers in Idaho and Nebraska are especially keen on it, with plans to draft similar policies when legislative sessions resume next year. “If the feds won’t do it, states are saying, ‘We’re going to have to do it,’” said Idaho state Sen. Monty Pearce, whose second cousin, Sen. Russell Pearce, is the author of the Arizona law. Similar bills have been introduced in Pennsylvania , Rhode Island , Minnesota , South Carolina , and Michigan.

TROPICAL STORM THREATENS CLEANUP: Just when things were looking promising for the oil-spill cleanup, weather forecasters warn that the summer’s first tropical storm—which will be named Alex and could hit as early as Monday—may rip through the Deepwater Horizon site. Concern for the safety of the flotilla working at the site is a priority, BP spokesman David Nicholas said. Ships pumping oil from the now-capped well will be forced to evacuate, leaving the well to spew oil once again. “Of course we are watching that very closely right now,” said Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the point man for the response to the oil spill, saying that spill responders will act “out of an abundance of caution.” The storm’s size, strength, and path are still uncertain, and, to be sure, may avoid the rescue efforts entirely. To weather summer storms, BP is expecting it’s much more rugged containment vessel, the Helix Producer, to arrive at the scene from the Gulf’s Green Canyon area on Tuesday.

GITMO UNLIKELY TO CLOSE BY 2013: President Obama made several big promises on the campaign trail—foremost among them, to close Guantanamo Bay. After missing his initial deadline of January 2010, amid political opposition and shifting priorities, it’s now looking increasingly unlikely that the White House will successfully shut it down by 2013. Earlier this year, the administration vowed to move detainees to a prison in Illinois, but obstacles to that plan have arisen in Congress, and Obama’s done little to vanquish them. “There is a lot of inertia” against closing Gitmo, “and the administration is not putting a lot of energy behind their position that I can see,” Senator Carl Levin, who supports the Illinois plan, told The New York Times. Senator Lindsey Graham, who also supports closing it, said the effort is “on life support and it’s unlikely to close any time soon.”

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***The effect of American success in South Africa is rippling through sporting goods stores over 4,000 miles away, as sales of World Cup merchandise in the U.S. have skyrocketed.    ***Kellogg recalled 28million boxes of cereal, after roughly 20 complaints of foul flavors and odors coming from Kellogg products, the manufacturer voluntarily recalled 28 million boxes of breakfast cereals on Friday. Kellogg admitted there was “an uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell” caused by the box liners of Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops, and Honey Smacks products. Though it is unlikely to cause serious illness, the company took the measure because the tainted products could lead to nausea and diarrhea among sensitive customers. The affected boxes are those with the letters “KN” following the “better if used before.” Many products geared toward children have come under intense scrutiny in recent months after a slew of them were recalled, including 40 non-prescription products manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.

LBN-COMMENTARY By JIM PETERIK: An anthem is a song that touches something deep in the heart of the listener.  It’s not a thought-out response- it’s an emotional, unrehearsed feeling.  There is generally a “rise to action” type of message that invites people to join hands and voices.  It’s the universal feeling that we are all in this crazy world together.  Whether it is John Lennon’s Give Peace a Chance, Queen’s We Will Rock You-or my own bid at immortality- Eye of The Tiger, which I co-wrote for a huge boxing movie, it holds significance for anyone who needs to overcome an obstacle in life.

LBN-HISTORICAL COMMENTARY By DENNIS HOPPER: There are moments that I’ve had some real brilliance, you know. But I think they are moments. And sometimes, in a career, moments are enough. I never felt I played the great part. I never felt that I directed the great movie.

TOP TALIBAN COMMANDER CHEERS MCCHRYSTAL SACKING: The Afghan Taliban has a saying: “Americans may own the watches. But we’ve got the time.” As President Obama sacked Gen. Stanley McChrystal this week, replacing him with Gen. David Petraeus, Taliban commanders watched events unfold from afar, and then declared this was yet another victory. The change of leadership, was said to give them even more time in their fight against U.S. forces. Ahmadullah Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, said that sending Gen. McChrystal home in the middle of the war, in such a inglorious way, was good news as it proved how troubled and divided the U.S. political and military leadership had become. “Before Gen. McChrystal, many strong military generals suffered defeat,” in Afghanistan, Ahmadi said. “The Americans know that Afghanistan is the ‘graveyard of empires.’ But even so, they invaded this country.”

HOUSE AND SENATE REACH DEAL ON FINANCIAL SYSTEM REFORM: Nearly two years after the American financial system teetered on the verge of collapse, congressional negotiators reached agreement early Friday morning to reconcile competing versions of the biggest overhaul of fiscal regulations since the Great Depression. A 20-hour marathon by members of a House-Senate conference committee culminated at 5:39 a.m. Friday with the approval of proposals to restrict trading by banks for their own benefit. Moreover, requiring banks and their parent companies to segregate much of their derivatives activities.

BP BILL TOPS $2.35 BILLION: BP said Friday that it had already spent $2.35 billion dealing with the fallout from the oil spill, from cleanup operations, to containment of the well, and paying out many of the early claims. And the company’s spending is far from over. A spokesman added that it was still “too early to quantify other potential costs and liabilities associated with the incident.” In the short term, however, BP is hoping to spend its money much more efficiently. Alhough, it collected 16,830 barrels of oil on Wednesday, it says that it may be able to capture up to 53,000 barrels a day by next week, thanks to the successful reinstallation of a cap on the well. But in the meantime, oil continues to wash up on the Gulf Coast. On Thursday, Florida officials closed a beach for the first time due to the spill—a quarter-mile stretch of Pensacola Beach near Alabama—as thick pools of brown oil formed on the shore.

PETRAEUS VS. THE AFGHAN MAFIA: After General McChrystal’s hasty departure this week, President Obama was pressed about the anticipated July 2011 pullout date from Afghanistan. “We didn’t say we’d be switching off the lights and closing the door behind us,” he said. “What we said is we’d begin a transition phase in which the Afghan government is taking on more and more responsibility.” What had generally been referred to as a “pullout” is now being carefully characterized as a “draw down” by Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Meanwhile, General David Petraeus has stated that he backs Obama’s plan to begin pulling out of Afghanistan by 2011. “I support the president’s policy, and I will also provide the best professional military advice as we conduct assessments,” he said on CNN, in his first public comments since taking over from McChrystal.

IRAN WON’T SEND AID SHIP TO GAZA: Three weeks after Israeli troops killed nine activists on a ship bound for Gaza, Iran has decided not to send its own aid ship. Hossein Sheikholeslam, secretary-general of the International Conference for the Support of the Palestinian Intifada, explained that Iran would use other means to deliver goods. “The Zionist regime has made helping the people of Gaza, who are under siege, a political issue and we do not wish to politicize this kind of humanitarian aid because first and foremost we want the siege of Gaza to be broken,” he said.

HOW A DRUG LORD ELUDED 2,000 COPS: As 2,000 police officers sparked deadly riots in Kingston, Jamaica last month looking for the drug lord Christopher Coke, theories about his whereabouts abounded. Authorities began to think he was hiding out on the other side of the island, then that he had left the island altogether. In the end, it turned out that Coke, who is wanted in the U.S. on gun and drug charges, was running all over Jamaica in a bushy black wig and a baseball cap. A pink wig and women’s sunglasses were also found in his car when he was finally arrested Tuesday afternoon. It had taken police over a month to track him down, but when they finally did, he went peacefully and was taken to the U.S. Embassy to surrender.

WHALEWATCHING REAPS $2.1 BILLION: Maybe money will convince people the whales are worth saving. According to a new study, the whalewatching industry took in over two billion dollars in 2009—and that number has expected to grow by ten percent annually. The study, published in the Marine Policy journal, says in 2009 a whopping 13 million wildlife enthusiasts paid to stare at bodies of water in the hopes of catching the mammals in their natural habitats, generating $2.1 billion in revenue. Whale tourism could contribute 5,700 jobs to the global economy each year. “There is a tremendous economic future—a sustainable future—in whale watching, not whale killing,” said Peter Garett, Australia’s minister for environment.

My family was there last week and we saw very few Americans. We should be flocking to the world’s most magnificent display of architecture, design, urban planning, and über-cool techno-gadgetry. LBN-COMMENTARY BY PEGGY NOONAN: Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s greatest contribution to the war in Afghanistan may turn out to be forcing everyone to focus on it. The real news there this week was not Gen. McChrystal’s epic faux pas and dismissal but that 12 soldiers were killed on June 7-8, including five Americans by a roadside bomb, making that “the deadliest 24 hour period this year,” as The Economist noted. Insurgency-related violence was up by 87% in the six months prior to March. Agence France-Presse reported Thursday that NATO forces are experiencing their deadliest month ever.

OBAMA’S ‘STERN’ WARNING TO NATIONAL SECURITY TEAM: GEN. DAVID PETRAEUS HAS BEEN HERE BEFORE: Petraeus steps up in Afghanistan where his counterinsurgency strategy is already in place. Iraq required a strategic turn-around. But while Petraeus’ approach to Iraq has been exported to Afghanistan, the two countries face very different sets of challenges. Afghanistan’s society has been shattered; its insurgency isn’t concentrated in cities but spread throughout the country. One more difference? Petraeus must try to heal the wounds of an American foreign policy team turn asunder by the comments of Gen. Stanley McChrystal and his staff. Sources close to Wednesday’s meeting tell The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove about Obama’s “stern” warning to his bickering national security and foreign policy team after accepting McChrystal’s resignation. His message? Cut the crap. Plus, Retired Gen. Ken Allard on what the military can learn from McChrystal, Iraq Vet Anthony Woods on what it means for the troops, Reihan Salam on whether Obama’s “team of rivals” can survive, and more Daily Beast contributors weigh in on Obama’s selection of Petraeus.

BP IS PURSUING ALASKA DRILLING SOME CALL RISKY: BP is moving ahead with a controversial and potentially record-setting project to drill two miles under the sea and then six to eight miles horizontally to reach what is believed to be a 100-million-barrel reservoir of oil under federal waters. All other new projects in the Arctic have been halted by the Obama administration’s moratorium on offshore drilling, including more traditional projects like Shell Oil’s plans to drill three wells in the Chukchi Sea and two in the Beaufort. But BP’s project, called Liberty, has been exempted as regulators have granted it status as an “onshore” project even though it is about three miles off the coast in the Beaufort Sea. The reason: it sits on an artificial island — a 31-acre pile of gravel in about 22 feet of water — built by BP.

HIGH COURT SIDES WITH EX-ENRON CEO SKILLING; RULING DOESN’T NECESSARILY OVERTURN CONVICTION:  The Supreme Court has sided with Jeffrey Skilling, the former Enron chief executive, in limiting the use of a federal fraud law that has been a favorite of white-collar crime prosecutors.  The court said Thursday that the “honest services” law could not be used in convicting Mr. Skilling for his role in the collapse of Enron. But Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said in her majority opinion that the ruling does not necessarily require Mr. Skilling’s conviction to be overturned.  The court in this ruling also sided with the former newspaper magnate Conrad Black, setting aside a federal appeals court decision that had upheld Mr. Black’s honest services fraud conviction. But as in Mr. Skilling’s case, the justices left the ultimate resolution of the case to the appeals court.

CIA HIRES BLACKWATER: The CIA has hired Xe, the scandal-plagued private contractor formerly known as Blackwater, to guard its facilities in Afghanistan and other locations in a $100 million contract, The Washington Post reports. The company, which has changed its name to Xe to ease bad PR in the wake of various controversies, beat out two other contractors, Triple Canopy and DynCorp International. Only one day earlier, a federal commission sharply criticized the State Department for its new $120 million contract with Xe to guard consulates in Afghanistan. An anonymous U.S. official insisted the former Blackwater has reformed itself. The company is still battling investigations into a 2007 incident when its guards fired into a Baghdad square, killing 17 civilians. Its owner, Erik Prince, has put the firm up for sale.

GOOGLE’S YOUTUBE WINS BITTER VIACOM BATTLE: Google triumphed in a nasty, three-year war with Viacom on Wednesday as a federal court ruled that Google’s YouTube subsidiary is not liable for its users’ copyright infringements. A U.S. district court in New York ruled YouTube is covered by a “safe harbor” clause in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that protects service providers from penalties for their users’ copyright violations, as long as they address those violations once they’re made aware of them.

JACKO ESTATE KEEPS BEATLES TUNES: Michael Jackson’s estate will hold onto the King of Pop’s stake in 250 songs written by the Beatles, Bloomberg reports. Previously, it had been expected that executors might unload Jackson’s share of the archive, valued at least $750 million. Currently, the late pop singer’s estate faces $500 million in debt. Keeping the Beatles songs will allow the Jackson executors to refinance a $300 million loan due later this year. Death has been good to the pop star’s wallet. CHINA FLOOD DEATH TOLL RISES TO 211: The death toll has risen to 211 as a result of flooding in China, state-run news outlets reported Wednesday. About 100,000 people had already fled earlier flooding from the Fu River in Jiangxi province this week, the state-run China Daily newspaper reported a new breach on the river intensified the flooding, state news reports said.

Van der Sloot said he has been detained without a judicial order.

AUSTRALIA WELCOMES FIRST FEMALE PM:  Julia Gillard became the first female Australian Prime Minister Thursday after former Labor leader Kevin Rudd stepped down. Rudd, faced with rising unpopularity after he abandoned a carbon-reduction plan and imposed a new mining tax, has now become the shortest-serving Australian Prime Minister since 1972. Gillard is considered more left-wing than Rudd, but lawmakers believe she has a better chance of gaining more voters for the embattled Labor Party since she has a warmer personality than her predecessor. Gillard will have a tough challenge in the next general election, however: Several mining companies are expected to pump money and energy into the Conservative Party to have the mining tax repealed.

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***Sales of newly built homes plunged in May to their lowest level in more than four decades after a lucrative tax credit expired, draining demand for home purchases in all four regions of the country. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that sales of new single-family homes dropped 32.7 percent in May from the previous month, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 300,000. The percentage drop was the largest monthly decline since the government started tracking the numbers in 1963.   ***More than 1,200 prison inmates, including 241 serving life sentences, defrauded the government of $9.1 million in tax credits reserved for first-time homebuyers, according to a Treasury Department report released Wednesday. Treasury’s inspector general also found that thousands of people filed multiple claims or made claims outside the allotted time period. In all, more than $28 million was improperly doled out. The Internal Revenue Service program at issue is meant to stimulate the housing market by giving tax credits of as much as $8,000 to qualifying first-time home buyers.

PASSENGERS ROAST ON GROUNDED PLANE:  Passengers were trapped in a scorching hot airplane when the London-to-Newark flight was diverted in Connecticut because of bad weather, and regulations grounded it there. The plane’s generator cut out, leaving the 300 people on board without air conditioning on a 100 degree summer day. Some people on the Virgin Atlantic flight fainted. Eventually, “people were yelling and screaming,” one passenger said. After a two hour delay in London thanks to generator problems and then New York City-area thunderstorms forcing a diversion, once the plane reached Connecticut’s Bradley Airport, the pilots had exceeded their maximum flight time and couldn’t take the passengers home. Bradley Airport is unequipped for international arrivals, so passengers had to wait for Immigration and Customs officials to arrive—two more hours of waiting. Worse, local hotels were booked because of a golf tournament. Passengers boarded a bus to Newark at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, almost 12 hours after they had been scheduled to arrive there.

Recently a California county became the first in the nation to enforce such a ban. “McDonald’s is the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children,” said a representative for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “McDonald’s use of toys undercuts parental authority and exploits young children’s developmental immaturity.” McDonald’s officials say the toys are “just one part of a fun, family experience” and that Happy Meals are the appropriate size for children.

OBAMA RELIEVES MCCHRYSTAL OF COMMAND; PETRAEUS TO SUCCEED: President Obama has relieved Gen. Stanley McChrystal of his duties as the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, after McChrystal was quoted criticizing top White House officials in a Rolling Stone article, according to a White House official. Obama will name Gen. David Petraeus to succeed McChrystal as top war commander in Afghanistan.

OBAMA ASKS FOR $600M FOR BORDER SECURITY: No mention of comprehensive immigration reform here: President Obama has requested an emergency $600 million from Congress to boost border security. The cash would pay for a big personnel increase—1,000 more Border Patrol agents, 160 Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, 1,200 National Guard troops, and more FBI task forces and Drug Enforcement administration agents — as well as other security measures, like more Border Patrol canine teams, two drones, and DNA and ballistic analysis technology for Mexican authorities desperately trying to control the drug violence there. Another $100 million would go toward strengthening fences and infrastructure along the border. As the drug war heats up in Mexico, so does illegal immigration anxiety in the Southwest, and Obama’s request is perhaps a reaction to Arizona’s controversial new immigration law.

NEW REMAINS FOUND AT GROUND ZERO: The construction project at Ground Zero may finally have gotten off the ground, but not without constant reminders of the terror that came before it. Construction work has uncovered 72 human remains at the site of the September 11 attack, according to the Telegraph. The remains were discovered after workers sifted through more than 800 cubic yards of debris. Most of the remains, 37 to be exact, were uncovered under West Street.

BAD FALL: New home sales plunged almost 33 percent in May, the federal government says.

DRILLING MORATORIUM TO RETURN: If at first you don’t succeed, try again: Hours after a New Orleans judge struck down the Obama administration’s moratorium on off-shore drilling, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that he will issue a new order reinstating the temporary ban. Salazar said in a statement that the new order will make clear why a six-month moratorium is essential and include additional evidence that safety conditions are inadequate in deepwater wells.

LBN-THE “INSIDE” STORY: Voters in a US city are deciding whether illegal immigrants should be banned from renting property. Mounting anger over an influx of Hispanic workers attracted by jobs at meat packing factories in Fremont, in eastern Nebraska (one of the mildly fascist wall displays there pictured above), has sparked the vote. Across America campaigners have demanded action against the poor enforcement of federal laws aimed at preventing illegal immigration.

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***The first reviews for the fourth generation iPhone are rolling out, and surprise, surprise, they are full of praise: The iPhone 4 delivers “a big, well-designed update that, in my view, keeps it in the lead in the smartphone wars,” writes Walt Mossberg at The Wall Street Journal. The iPhone 4 has a new look: a sharper screen, larger battery, rear camera with a flash, and is thinner than its predecessors. The phone also has a front-facing camera with video capabilities, and the video software, FaceTime, reinvents calling. But there is a downside: the iPhone 4 is still on the overwhelmed AT&T network, which has poor network reception in many cities.

The Walt Disney Co. is expected to unveil plans today for a pricey vacation-home development in Florida’s Walt Disney World. Disney will offer homes priced between $1.5 million and $8 million in a state where the foreclosure rate remains among the nation’s highest.

JERSEY SHORE BOYS APPEAR ON GAY COVER: Ronnie, Vinnie, and the Situation from MTV’s Jersey Shore were more than happy to take their shirts off for the Village Voice; but would they have been if they had known the photo shoot was for the newspaper’s annual “Queer Issue”? “They didn’t know,” a source tells Page Six. The cover shows the muscled trio above the headline “The Guido Ideal,” an article about “Jersey’s Shore on the down low.”

JEB BUSH SLAMS OBAMA: Someone must have put something in Jeb Bush’s coffee: The former governor of Florida and brother of George W. Bush gets feisty in an interview with The New York Times. He accuses President Obama of “liking” to blame George’s administration for everything.” “It’s childish,” Jeb says. “This is what children do until they mature. They don’t accept responsibility.” He also says Obama “seems like he’s getting caught up in what people are writing about him” and advises the president to take a break by reading a book or watching ESPN. His final assessment? “By and large, I think the president, instead of being a 21st-century leader, is Hubert Humphrey on steroids. I don’t think there’s much newness in spending more money as the solution to every problem.”

LBN-COMMENTARY By MAUREEN DOWD: So this general with the background in intelligence who is supposed to conquer Afghanistan can’t even figure out what Rolling Stone is? We’re not talking Guns & Ammo here; we’re talking the antiwar hippie magazine.  Military guys are rarely as smart as they think they are, and they’ve never gotten over the fact that civilians run the military.  Gen. Stanley McChrystal and his hard-bitten, smart-aleck aides nuked the president, vice president and other top advisers as wimps, losers and clowns in a Rolling Stone profile meant to polish the general’s image.  It was a product of the warrior-god culture, four-star generals with their own public-relations teams that came from Gen. David Petraeus. And the towel-snapping was intensified by the fact that McChrystal used to be a tough special-ops, under-cover-of-the-night, rules-don’t-apply-to-us military guy.

LBN-COMMENTARY By MAX BOOT: Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s ill-advised remarks shouldn’t overshadow the credit he deserves for putting in place the right strategy to turn around a failing war effort.

LBN-COMMENTARY By DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN: If Abraham Lincoln’s experience is any guide, Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s fate will be determined by how his firing would affect the war in Afghanistan.

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Just like real teenagers, it appears that the actors on Glee won’t stop sleeping with each other. “I have a rule: don’t do it in your trailer,” says Ryan Murphy, one of the show’s creators, in an interview with Heat magazine. “They’ve broken that rule on many occasions. I’m like, ‘I know you guys are young and hormonal, but don’t do it in your trailer’.” Murphy hastens to add, “when you work on a set for 18 hours a day I think it’s natural.” Recently Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale, who play the couple of Tina and Artie on the show, were seen together in London and Monaco.   ***Katy Perry needed 17 stitches after a mysterious injury in Toronto over the weekend. On Sunday, she performed at the MuchMusic Awards, but somehow got hurt dancing at a local club. She posted yesterday on Twitter, “17 stitches later Don’t make fun of my dance moves tomorrow. That’s what got me here in the 1st place! Thanks for the souvenir, Canada)!” Perry didn’t say where or how she got hurt. Her rep didn’t respond by press time.

JUDGE BLOCKS OBAMA’S MORATORIUM ON DEEP-WATER OIL DRILLING: A federal judge in New Orleans issued an injunction against a six-month moratorium on new deep-water oil and gas drilling projects that was imposed by the Obama administration after an explosion on a drilling rig led to a vast oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Associated Press reported.  The White House said the administration would appeal the ruling.  Ruling in favor of oilfield services companies whose business suffered under the moratorium, District Judge Martin Feldman said that the Interior Department failed to provide adequate reasoning for the moratorium, and instead merely seemed to assume that one rig failure meant all deep-water drilling posed an imminent danger.

WIKILEAKS TO RELEASE AIRSTRIKE: After surfacing for a speech in Brussels on Monday, the WikiLeaks founder told The Washington Post that this week his website will release documents related to a U.S. airstrike that killed Afghan civilians. Assange says the documents are related to the airstrike on Garani in May 2009. Assange also said that his most controversial rumored possession—combat footage from this airstrike—will be released later this summer.

GROWING CONCERN IN BRAZIL AS NUMBER OF FLOOD VICTIMS INCREASE: Officials in Brazil fear the death toll may rise as a result of persistent rain and flooding that has punished the northeastern states of Pernambuco and Alagoas, killing 33 people and leaving thousands homeless, officials said. More than 1,000 people are missing in the state of Alagoas; 500 people are unaccounted for in the town of Uniao dos Palmares in Alagoas alone, a state spokesman said.

3 U.N. PEACEKEEPERS KILLED IN DARFUR: Three U.N. peacekeepers were killed and another was seriously wounded in a shoot-out on Monday by unknown attackers in the West Darfur region of Sudan, the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur said. The soldiers from a UNAMID Protection Force Battalion were providing security to civilian engineers working at a site near the village of Nertiti, in the Jebel Marra area, around 11:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. ET), when more than 20 attackers in camouflage battle dress began firing on them, UNAMID said in a news release.

HELEN MIRREN GOES TOPLESS:  Helen Mirren was “a bit notorious” in her early years acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and she’d like to remind fans of that with her steamy portrayal of a cancer-stricken Las Vegas madam with a younger lover in the upcoming film Love Ranch—as well as with a few topless pics in New York magazine. The 65-year-old actress was dubbed a “sex queen” early on, but unlike so many sexy young starlets, she’s also nabbed an Oscar. “I’m still the good girl who wants to be a bad girl,” Mirren told the magazine. “But I’ll never make it as a bad girl… I’m not a prude or a moralist and I never have been, but I’m too fearful, too much of a wimp, really.” On the other hand, she was willing to spend a night in a brothel to prepare for her new role: “It’s amazing how quickly you get into dildos everywhere and pink-feather handcuffs. Within an hour, you’re completely used to it.”

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***Russell Frackman, a partner in the Los Angeles office of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP (MS&K), was honored in New York as one of the most influential lawyers of the past decade.  Frackman, an experienced trial and appellate litigator specializing in intellectual property, entertainment and technology matters, was recognized by the National Law Journal, the leading national legal newspaper in the U.S.  He was feted for his historic work that “has defined how copyright laws apply to the explosion of file-sharing technology in the past decade.”   ***Amazon and Barnes & Noble have cut the prices of their e-readers in response to the wildly successful iPad from Apple, which sold 2 million of the gadgets in its first 60 days on the market. Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook are modest, but the devices are key to attracting book lovers. Both had cost $259, but the Nook has been discounted to $199 and the Kindle to $189.   ***LCO–Levine Communications Office has been awarded the prestigious 2010 Bulldog Award for Excellence in Media Relations and Publicity, the Oscar of the public relations industry, for ‘Best Arts and Entertainment Campaign of the Year’ on behalf of the iconic rock band KISS. The award-winning LCO team included Executive Vice President Liam Collopy and Account Manager Lee Runchey. LCO has won a national award in each of the last four decades.

LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***Kristen Bell is in negotiations to join Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski in “Everybody Loves Whales,” a Working Title project for Universal.   ***“Glee” co-creator Ian Brennan is to receive the Comedy Writer of the Year award at the upcoming Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal.

WHY MCCHRYSTAL WILL STAY: It sure looks like President Obama is going to fire General Stanley McChrystal—and with good cause, as many argue—but is there a chance the man in charge of Afghanistan could survive the disastrous interview he gave to Rolling Stone? His best bet seems to be in hoping that Obama deems it too risky to change the commander in Afghanistan this late in the game. “It’s perilous for Obama to fire McChrystal now, with only a year remaining before the July 2011 date for beginning to transition to Afghan security responsibilities and consequently beginning troop reductions,” writes Spencer Ackerman. Similarly, Marc Ambinder writes, “[R]eally, for Mr. Obama, the most important thing, at the end of the day, is winning the war. That’s why McChrystal probably won’t be fired. That’s probably why McChrystal won’t resign. And that’s why all of the actors in this drama are going to have to at least pretend to get along: there are lives at stake.”

LBN-MUSIC INSIDER:    ***KISS (http://www.kissonline.com/), the iconic rock band that has sold more than 80 million albums, played in front of millions and become an integral part of the American fabric over a 37-year career, can now add the KISS Scratcher Game to their staggering list of accomplishments. KISS and the New Mexico Lottery today announced that they have signed a licensing agreement that will introduce the band to the $225 billion-a-year global lottery industry.  As part of this historic agreement, the New Mexico Lottery will unveil the first-ever KISS Scratcher today.   ***“American Idol” producers on Monday lowered the age limit for contestants to 15, but there was still no word on a new judge to replace Simon Cowell as auditions were announced for next month.   ***Last week, rapper Lil Wayne pled guilty to a drug possession charge to a Yuma County, Arizona court, changing his original “not guilty” plea.  As a result of his new plea, Lil Wayne, who appeared via video feed from his jail cell in New York, may not have to serve a prison sentence for drug and weapons charges in Arizona.   ***Paul Grey, the bassist for the Grammy-winning metal band Slipknot, died of an “accidental” overdose of morphine and fentanyl, a synthetic morphine substitute, police in Iowa said on Monday as autopsy results were released.

PETER ORSZAG STEPPING DOWN: Administration officials have confirmed that budget director Peter Orszag will leave his post in July, making him the first member to leave Obama’s Cabinet. Presidential advisers have named two likely successors: Laura D’Andrea Tyson of UCLA, a member of the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board, and Gene Sperling, a counselor to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. Sources report that Orszag had been debating leaving this summer or early next year: “He went back and forth and couldn’t quite commit,” a colleague of Orszag’s told Politico. Reportedly, Orszag is itching to move on after guiding the White House and Congress through such massive expenditure laws as the stimulus bill and the health-care overhaul. Orszag led the Congressional Budget Office for two years before heading to the Office of Management and Budget in 2009.

LBN-HEALTH NEWS:  ***In the last ten years, rheumatoid arthritis has seen a 50 percent increase in women, jumping from 36.4 per 100,000 in 1995 to 54 per 100,000 in 2005. This translates to an ever-increasing number of women looking for treatment and ways to keep what can be a debilitating condition at bay. Results from a recent U.S study out of Georgetown University indicated that drinking tea raised the risk of RA in post-menopausal women. Researchers studied more than 76,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79 and concluded that consuming tea, in any amount, increased the chances of developing RA by 40 percent, while women who drank more than four cups a day ran an increased risk of 78 percent. Interestingly enough, coffee seemed to have no effect on the development of RA in the study group.

LBN-SPORTS INSIDER:   ***For the first time in World Cup history, the host nation will not advance to the knockout round. But at least South Africa ended its tournament on a high note: They upset France 2-1 on Tuesday. Both goals came in the first half of the game, during most of which France played a man down after Yoan Gourcuff was red carded in the 25th minute. France was also eliminated from the tournament. In Group A’s other matchup, Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0. Both teams will move on to the knockout round.   ***Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0 in this morning’s World Cup game but both teams will still go to the knockout stage.  South Africa beat France 2-1 this morning, as well. Greece will be playing Argentina at 2:30 PM ET as will Nigeria against South Korea.   ***Serena Williams wins her Wimbledon opener on Tuesday against 17-year-old Michelle Larcher de Brito.  She was last years singles and doubles winner (with sister Venus Williams).

LBN-COMMENTARY By JACOB HEILBRUNN: Is the Obama White House filled with wimps like Joe Biden and Richard Holbrooke? That’s apparently what Gen. Stanley McChrystal told Rolling Stone magazine, only to apologize today. It sounds as though McChrystal is doing more than simply venting. He’s trying to dodge responsibility for the war and pin it on President Obama. His remarks thus crystallize the administration’s problem: Its Afghan surge appears to have failed before it even began.

LBN-COMMENTARY By RICHARD TRUMKA: Blaming immigrant workers for our economic catastrophe is like blaming shrimpers for the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

LBN-COMMENTARY By LYNN PARRAMORE: It’s time for a new Steinbeck. And we had better find her quickly, because what’s coming if we don’t find a new way of relating to ourselves and the world that we are all part of will make the Dust Bowl look like a tempest in a teapot.

LBN-COMMENTARY By LAWRENCE WITTNER: The offshore oil drilling catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico brought to us by BP has overshadowed its central role over the past century in fostering some other disastrous events.

LBN-HISTORICAL COMMENTARY By C.S.LEWIS: Don’t use words too big for the subject. Don’t say “infinitely” when you mean “very”; otherwise you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.

AL-QAIDA WARNS OF NEW ATTACKS DEADLIER THAN BEFORE: Al-Qaida’s U.S.born spokesman warned President Barack Obama, Sunday, that the militant group may launch new attacks that would kill more Americans than previous ones. In a taunting, 24 minute message that dwelled on Obama’s setbacks, including the loss of Massachusetts Senate seat to the Republicans, Adam Gadahn set out al-Qaida’s conditions for peace with the U.S., including cutting support for Israel and withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS LAW BANNING SUPPORT OF TERROR-LINKED GROUPS: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a federal law that bars “material support” to foreign terrorist organizations, rejecting a free speech challenge from humanitarian aid groups. The 6-3 ruling said that the government may prohibit all forms of aid to designated terrorist groups, even if the support consists of training and advice about entirely peaceful and legal activities.

OBAMA, NETANYAHU TO MEET JULY 6: A reward for good behavior? The White House praised Israel’s decision to lift the Gaza blockade and said President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet on July 6. Robert Gibbs said Israel’s decision should “improve life for the people of Gaza,” though the move has not satisfied all of Israel’s critics: the country will only allow goods in over land and will maintain the sea blockade. Gibbs said, “There is more to be done, and the president looks forward to discussing this new policy, and additional steps.”

VAN DER SLOOT TAKES BACK CONFESSION: Rule number one from the “How Not to Seem Innocent” playbook, change your story repeatedly. That seems to be the strategy for Joran van der Sloot, who has reportedly retracted his confession to the murder of Stephany Flores, citing intimidation during the interrogation process and a broken promise that he would be moved to his native Netherlands after a confession. Van der Sloot is also the primary suspect in the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in 2005, and has often given conflicting statements on his involvement with the case.

SANDY PUTS DIVORCE ON HOLD AFTER SHE FORGIVES JESSE: Despite the public humiliation she suffered after her husband cheated on her with tattooed strippers and biker groupies, America’s sweetheart Sandra Bullock has put her $250 million divorce from Jesse James on hold - and she’s thinking about taking him back! Sources close to the 45-year-old Oscar-winner actress say her dramatic change of heart stems from the joy she’s experienced from spending time in New Orleans with her newly adopted baby, Louis.

MADOFF’S $9 BILLION STASH?: Did Bernie Madoff manage to get away with more than we think? The New York Post reports that the ex-Ponzi schemer’s fellow inmates at a North Carolina prison have been told by Madoff himself that he managed to hide $9 billion of his ill-gotten money with three friends before heading to prison. While the source says that Madoff’s former partner Frank DiPascali has knowledge of the scheme, he adds, “I think it was personal friends” who agreed to take care of the money for Madoff. Other revelations from the inmates: Madoff has struck up a friendship with mob boss Carmine Persico (”They play bocce,” says the source), and injuries that caused rumors of a prison scuffle several months ago were actually the result of a bad mix of anti-depressants, which were prescribed to Madoff by the prison psychiatrist.

LBN-HEALTH WATCH:   ***Previous studies have shown that children treated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with medication may eat less and grow slower than their peers; however, the results of a recent study, which tracked participants for 10 years, suggest that this is not the case. According to researchers, though there may be some growth delay in the first year of treatment, but by the end of the study, there was no difference in the height or weight of those with ADHD and those without. Furthermore, there was found to be no relationship between height and weight and the period of time participants had been on medication.

LBN-RECOMMENDS By LLOYD GROVE (Editor at Large for The Daily Beast): If you thought the BP oil spill was bad, HBO’s latest documentary “Gasland,” premiering tonight at 9 p.m., will make you mad. It offers a disturbing look at a potentially even greater environmental catastrophe: natural gas drilling. With a darkly comic sensibility—punctuated by some mean banjo riffs—filmmaker Josh Fox conducts a nationwide tour of the drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing, a popular method that pours toxic chemicals into the ground and apparently causes drinking water to light on fire while making people sick. The response of Big Gas? Deny, deny, deny!

Several years after the fact, New Mexicans are still smarting from Kilmer’s comments describing his area as “the homicide capital of the Southwest,” and later adding that “80 percent of the people in my county are drunk.” Locals are now demanding an apology before Kilmer’s permits can go through, and one said, “That’s all he has to do, come and apologize. 27 KILLED IN TWIN CAR BOMBS: A pair of car bombs has ripped through crowded Nisoor Square in Baghdad, killing 27 people and wounding 50. The targeted building contained an interior ministry office that issues ID cards and many people were lined up outside when the cars exploded. Police and the Trade Bank of Iraq were also in the offices. The blasts were coordinated, with the vehicles parked a few hundred yards apart. Violence has increased in Iraq since the March elections, when a close result prevented politicians from easily forming a government. Three months later, a coalition still has not been formed.

DOCTOR INVENTS FEMALE CONDOMS WITH ‘TEETH’ TO FIGHT RAPE: South African Dr. Sonnet Ehlers is distributing Rape-aXe a new anti-rape protective female condom.  Ehlers is distributing the condoms in the various South African cities where the World Cup soccer games are taking place. The woman inserts the latex condom like a tampon. Jagged rows of teeth-like hooks line its inside and attach on a man’s penis during penetration, Ehlers said.  Once it lodges, only a doctor can remove it — a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest. “It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it’s on,” she said. “If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter however, it doesn’t break the skin, and there’s no danger of fluid exposure.” Ehlers said she sold her house and car to launch the project, and she planned to distribute 30,000 free devices under supervision during the World Cup period.

MAYOR OF GUADALUPE KILLED BY GUNMEN: A Gunmen shot and killed the mayor of the Mexican town of Guadalupe as his wife and child watched. Mexican federal police confirmed the shooting death of Guadalupe Mayor Jesus Manuel Lara Rodriguez.  The Mayor who maintained what was apparently a second home in Juarez, was killed outside that house as he walked to his car.  Lara, who became the mayor of Guadalupe in 2007, had apparently taken up residence in Juarez to protect his family.  This is a big loss for the city.

LOUISIANA TURNS TO PRAYER:  It has been exactly two months after the Deepwater Horizon oil well exploded in the Gulf of Mexico and the people of Louisiana can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. So Louisiana lawmakers want to call on a higher power than BP for help. The state Senate has unanimously voted on a day of prayer. “Thus far efforts made by mortals to try to solve the crisis have been to no avail,” state Sen. Robert Adley said. “It is clearly time for a miracle for us.”

CHINA WALKS BACK CURRENCY PLEDGE:  A day after China said it would begin to allow their currency, the yuan, to have a more flexible exchange rate, Chinese officials walked back the pledge, saying the yuan would remain stable. Since mid-2008, the yuan has remained at an essentially stagnant rate pegged to the U.S. dollar, a move that helped China stabilize its economy during the economic crisis but has since drawn international criticism. Analysts say that pegging the yuan undervalues the currency, giving Chinese-made goods a competitive advantage in the international marketplace. The promise to allow more flexibility was seen as an attempt to defuse criticism ahead of the G-20 summit next weekend. Calling the yuan “the people’s money,” the People’s Bank of China said it would stay at a “reasonable, balanced level” to maintain economic stability.

POLAND VOTES FOR NEW PRESIDENT: Citizens of Poland were casting ballots Sunday for a new president to replace Lech Kaczynski, who was killed in a plane crash in April. Frontrunner Bronislaw Komorowski is a moderate, favors adopting the Euro, and ending his country’s participation in the Afghanistan war. Trailing him is the late president’s identical twin, Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Kaczynski is a social conservative who wants to scale back market reforms and is opposed to adopting the Euro any time soon. It was by far the best debut for a film from Disney’s Pixar Animation, topping “The Incredibles” at $70.5 million.   ***Feature film directing has never offered job security. Still, in the past, budget-adhering helmers with a couple of studio credits under their belts could pretty much count on working every 18 months. HOW BP CUT CORNERS ON WELL DESIGN: Of the two major deepwater well designs available, BP routinely used the cheapest, which had fewer safety checks, employing the riskier well in 35 percent of its offshore rigs, a Wall Street Journal investigation shows. Competitors used that well type, called long string, far less often: Royal Dutch Shell only 8 percent of the time, Chevron 15 percent of the time, and BHP Billiton on only 4 percent of its wells. BP’s rivals have blasted the company for its breezy approach to safety. Meanwhile, BP CEO Tony Hayward was pulled from managing daily operations in the oil spill Friday due to his gaffe-prone handling of the crisis. Still, some tiny bit of good news came out of the Gulf Friday, as BP collected 25,000 barrels of oil, the most in a day so far. But questions persist about the rate of the spill, with latest estimates hovering between 35,000 and 60,000 barrels a day.

FEDERAL PANEL VOTES AGAINST ‘FEMALE VIAGRA’: A federal advisory panel unanimously voted not to recommend approving a new drug to treat low libido in women—suggesting further research by manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim, a German pharmaceutical company. The panel, the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee, serves as an adviser to the FDA, and it echoed the recommendation of an FDA staff report on the drug earlier this week. The panel concluded that the drug’s positive effects were “not robust enough to justify the risks,” which include dizziness, nausea, and fatigue, The New York Times reports. LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***As if Glee wasn’t a big enough hit on the small screen, Fox’s beloved musical television series could get even bigger with the news that there is potential for three films based on the show. HollywoodLife.com exclusively learned that Glee’s series regulars signed contracts that commit them to up to three Glee movies with 20th Century Fox Television. The studio included the “option” in the contracts to have its actors, including Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, and Dianna Agron, and Mark Salling, star in a potential trifecta of film versions. The language reads, “[The actor] hereby grants Fox three exclusive, irrevocable options to engage [the actor] in up to, respectively, three feature-length motion pictures.” Gleeks should be breaking into joyous song right about now.     ***A romance laced with psychological poison, “Cyrus” is a well-performed but superficial drama of emotional co-dependency.   ***Ronald Neame, a British filmmaker whose career dates to serving as assistant cameraman on the first feature film made with sound in Great Britain, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Blackmail” (1929), has died. He was 99.   ***“Life on Mars” star Jason O’Mara is taking another time travel trip — this time to Fox’s “Terra Nova.” 20th Century Fox TV confirmed late Friday that O’Mara is set to star as Jim Shannon, who guides his family as part of a group of settlers who travel back in time to a colony built in prehistoric Earth.

LBN-TODAY’S BIRTHDAY: Lou Gehrig (1903) As the New York Yankees’ first baseman for 15 seasons, Gehrig broke numerous major-league records. He retired from baseball in 1939, after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, now commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. During an emotional farewell speech at Yankee Stadium, he proclaimed himself the “luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Known as the “Iron Horse,” Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive league games, setting a record that stood until 1995.

BEATLES LYRICS SELL FOR $1.2M: Handwritten by John Lennon, the lyrics to the Beatles song “A Day in the Life” have sold at auction for $1.2 million. The song is written in felt marker and blue ink on both sides of a single sheet of paper. (Corrections and notes are added, of course, in red ink.) The song, which Lennon co-wrote with Paul McCartney, is the final track on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the group’s iconic 1967 album. An anonymous American bought the lyrics by telephone, Sotheby’s said. The sale price is a record for Beatles lyrics sheets, one previously held by “All You Need Is Love,” which went for $1 million five years ago.

LBN-SPORTS INSIDER:   ***Though he initially refused to explain why he disallowed the USA’s third goal in Friday’s 2-2 draw with Slovenia, World Cup referee Koman Coulibaly might be forced to explain his decision before FIFA’s refereeing committee. The U.S. had fought back from 2-0 down and seemed to have completed the comeback in the 86th minute when Maurice Edu poked the ball home. But Coulibaly blew his whistle for a reason that is still unclear after hundreds of replays. The result could yet cost the United States a place in the second round. “If [Coulibaly] is found to have made a serious mistake, especially one that affected the outcome, then he would be highly unlikely to play any further part in the tournament,” a FIFA source said. Coulibaly is widely considered one of Africa’s most experienced officials.   ***The Tiger Woods sex scandal, which chased a handful of corporate sponsors away from the sullied superstar, has cost the golfer about one-quarter of his annual $100 million take in endorsement cash so far. The lost revenue is tied to the loss of several lucrative corporate sponsorship deals — as Accenture, AT&T, Gillette, watchmaker Tag Heuer and Gatorade have all quit Team Tiger.

LBN-HEALTH WATCH:   ***The American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood, plasma, and other blood products in the US, yet it was recently fined $16 million by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for violating blood safety laws and other regulations. The Red Cross has been cited numerous times in the past and been fined over $21 million since 2003. This latest penalty was assessed because of the mislabeling of blood, failure to record complete donor information, and potential air contamination. Despite these problems, the FDA says the US blood supply appears to be safe.

LBN-COMMENTARY By MEHMET OZ, M.D (Vice-Chair and Professor of Surgery at Columbia University, author, radio and TV show host): While men do a lot of things well, one thing we don’t do is talk about our health enough or seek out care when we need it — let alone before we need it. Men have delusions of adequacy when it comes to monitoring our bodies and need to be more conscious of healthy living and knowing our numbers. So in honor of all the fellow fathers out there and the women and children who love them, let’s talk man to man for a moment: nothing is more manly than taking control of your own health.

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Groucho Marx did his best to stop legendary doctor Henry Heimlich’s impending marriage — by writing a letter to the parents of the bride branding him an “obscure quack.”  The comedian and movie star, then divorced, wrote to ballroom great Arthur Murray in 1951 after it was announced his daughter, Jane Murray, was to marry the man who later invented the Heimlich maneuver. Jane’s new book, “Out of Step,” reveals Groucho’s letter to her parents: “Your announcement that your daughter Jane is marrying an obscure quack named Heimlich saddened me considerably. I’ve had my eyes on Jane for a long time and always hoped some day you would wind up as my in-laws.   ***Legendary ladies’ man Warren Beatty is devastated over his 18-year-old daughter’s decision to turn herself into a man, according to sources. TIMES SQUARE CAR BOMB SUSPECT INDICTED ON 10 COUNTS: A federal grand jury in New York on Thursday indicted a suspect in the Times Square bombing attempt on 10 counts, some of which carry a mandatory life sentence. Faisal Shahzad, 30, faces charges of conspiracy and attempt to use a weapon of mass destruction, conspiracy and attempt to commit international terrorism and other counts, according to a Department of Justice statement. Six of the charges carry a maximum life sentence if convicted, including two that bring a mandatory life sentence, the Justice Department said.

BP’S U.S. EMPIRE ON THE BRINK: It could get a lot worse for BP. The company’s Gulf-spill liabilities could reach $40 billion, Bloomberg News said. The oil giant has already spent about $1.6 billion toward cleaning up the spill and set aside another $20 billion. Meanwhile, BP’s poor safety record could justify banning the oil giant from doing business in the U.S., Representative Bart Stupak said Thursday, citing a five-year string of accidents and deadly disasters at BP-operated facilities. At the opposite end of the corporate ladder, there seems to be no reprieve for some people on the Gulf Coast. Due to the moratorium on deepwater drilling, more than 50,000 oil rig workers’ jobs are at risk—especially if the ban goes into 2011.

GARDNER EXECUTED BY FIRING SQUAD: After 25 years on death row, Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed in Utah by a firing squad at 12:20 Friday morning, making him the first man put to death by firing squad in the United States in 14 years. The Salt Lake City native fell to four bullets, bringing closure for both his family and the families of his victims. “I’m so relieved it’s all over,” said Barb Webb, the daughter of one of Gardner’s victims, upon hearing the news. Gardner’s family cheered “I love you, Ron!” after learning of his death. “I’m just glad it’s over. I’m glad he’s free,” said his brother. Gardner was sentenced to death for killing attorney Michael Burdell in the spring of 1985.

PIRATES GET 5 YEARS IN PRISON: Five Somali men were convicted of plotting a hijack at sea and sentenced to five years in prison in the Netherlands, the first trial ever for pirates in Europe, a prosecution spokesman said on Thursday. The court rejected their claim that they were innocent fishermen, said Wim de Bruin, a spokesman for Netherlands National Prosecutor’s Office, noting that no fishing gear was found in their boat. The five were captured by the Danish navy in January 2009 in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia, after a cargo ship with Dutch Antilles flag was attacked.

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***The spill in the Gulf of Mexico will inflict billions of dollars worth of damage on the economies of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida by destroying fisheries, halting oil drilling, and scaring off tourists. But for scores of businesses—from small fry like Prestige to big operators like construction giant Fluor (FLR)—there’s money to be made in the aftermath of the worst oil spill in U.S. history.   ***Anna’s Italian Restaurant, a main stay of West Los Angeles for 41 years, will close on Sunday, June 27th.   ***Concerns have been propelling the value of gold to record highs over the past 18 months. In fact, gold posted a new intra-day high Friday, when it reached $1,260.90 an ounce. A day earlier, it reached a fresh record high closing price of $1,248.70 an ounce. Foreign central banks were net buyers of gold for the first time since 1997. India, China and Russia have been the biggest buyers. More recently, the Philippines and Kazakhstan jumped into the fray with big purchases of the precious metal during the first quarter, according to data released by the World Gold Council Thursday.   ***President Obama has called for greater market transparency and oversight to help propel the global economic recovery in a letter to leaders of the Group of 20 Nations ahead of their June 26 summit in Toronto.

LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***Film buyers were mystified/intrigued by Joaquin Phoenix’s “I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix” when they screened it last month. In the film, the actor, rapper was seen cavorting around the screen, trying to get the music industry bigwigs to pay attention to his singing, while also engaging in some pretty horrible behavior. Now it looks like audiences will have the opportunity to be mystified/intrigued, too. Sources say that Magnolia Pictures is in final negotiations to acquire the Casey Affleck-directed documentary from seller WME Entertainment, aiming for a release in the fall.   ***As the first half of 2010 draws to a close, “Toy Story 3″ is the only serious contender so far in the Oscar race.    ***Leonard Goldberg created — with the late Aaron Spelling — such hit TV series as “Charlie’s Angels,” “Starsky & Hutch” and “Fantasy Island,” but the last time he personally produced a TV series, there weren’t any DVDs or DVRs. On the show, Hilton asserted that he would post the photo again “if the photo agency let me, I would, because it’s not showing anything wrong or inappropriate.” He asserts that he did not Photoshop or pixelate the photo, and says that he shared the picture simply because it shows her “getting out of the car in an unladylike fashion” and that she was “very well aware that there were paparazzi present.” When Behar asked if Hilton was scared, he responded: “No, I’m not scared at all.” Hilton claims that “It’s not actually doing anything worse than Miley herself has been doing recently, from grinding up on her forty-something year old director to pole dancing to all the over-sexualized things that she has been doing and turning herself into this creature.” Behar challenged him: “That doesn’t make it right.”

FACEBOOK YEARLY REVENUE DOUBLES TO $800M: Further fueling hopes for a public share float and exceeding projections, Facebook’s revenue was as high as $800 million last year thanks to further growth in users and advertisers. The number more is more than double 2008 revenue. But the company insists it is not considering an IPO any time soon. Last year was the first time that the six-year-old social network with nearly half a billion users became what is known as free cash flow positive, meaning it was generating enough cash to cover its operating expenses and its capital spending.

LOVE CHILD OK’D TO DIG UP DAD CHESS KING BOBBY FISCHER:

The corpse of chess master Bobby Fishcher can be exhumed for DNA evidence in a love child case, a court in Iceland ruled.

Iceland’s Supreme Court ordered that the body of Bobby Fischer, the former wunderkind of chess championships, be disinterred to determine if he is the father of Jinky Young, a 9-year-old Philippines girl.

The American born Fischer died in January 2008 and was buried in the Laugardaelir Church cemetery.

Fischer’s estate, estimated worth $2 million, is the battleground for a legal war between Marilyn Young, Jinky’s mother, Miyoko Watai, head of the Japanese Chess Association, who said she legally married Fischer in 2004 AND two Fischer nephews, Alexander and Nicholas Targ.

DEFYING SANCTIONS, IRAN PLANS MORE ATOMIC REACTORS: Defying week-old U.N. sanctions over its nuclear program, Iran promised to expand its atomic research Wednesday as its president vowed to punish the West and force it to “sit at the negotiating table like a polite child” before agreeing to further talks.

ISRAEL TO EASE GAZA BLOCKADE: Israel says it will relax the blockade against Gaza that has been in place for three years, since Hamas took control of the government there. Details have not been ironed out, but one specific was offered: construction materials for civilian buildings will be let in under international supervision. The ban of cement and steel, which Israel said could be used to make weapons, has prevented Gazans from rebuilding after war last year. The statement, which came from the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, did not elaborate further—whether exports would be allowed, for example, was not explained.

The two got started in May 2009 with a top-secret dinner in New York City which featured David Rockefeller, Michael Bloomberg, George Soros, Oprah Winfrey, and Ted Turner. Melinda Gates told the magazine that getting both husbands and wives on board will be key to their success. “Even if he’s the one that made the money, she’s going to be a real gatekeeper,” Melinda Gates said. “And she’s got to go along with any philanthropic plan, because it affects her and it affects their kids.”

Not that Hayward won’t be spreading the blame around for the spill’s cause. “This is a complex accident, caused by an unprecedented combination of failures,” Hayward says. “A number of companies are involved, including BP, and it is simply too early to understand the cause.” Hayward, who has led BP since 2007, has taken heat for saying that he wants the spill to end because “I’d like my life back.”

HOLLYWOOD ACTOR JEREMY LONDON KIDNAPPED; HELD AT GUN POINT, ROBBED & FORCED TO SMOKE DRUGS: Armed bandits abducted and robbed Party of Five star Jeremy London and forced him to smoke drugs during a harrowing five hour ordeal in Palm Springs, California, police have revealed to RadarOnline.com. London, 37, was attempting to change a flat tire on his vehicle when two men stopped to help him, outside the Bahama Hotel & Apartments on North Palm Canyon Drive, late on the evening of Thursday, June 10. Sergeant Steve Douglas, from Palm Springs Police Department, told RadarOnline.com the kidnappers forcibly took London — who played Griffin Holbrook on the hit FOX series Party of Five and Chandler Hampton on 7th Heaven — and drove him around in his own vehicle, while terrorizing him at gun point. The suspects had a small hand gun, police said.

600 Penguins Die in Cold Snap: A sudden cold snap has killed about 600 endangered penguins on Bird Island, in Algoa Bay, South Africa. The rain and wind over the last two days was too much for many of the birds, especially little chicks, who have only down feathers for protection. African penguins were added to the endangered-species list this month; about 150,000 pairs were alive in 1956, but last year there were just 26,000 pairs. There are just 700 breeding pairs on Bird Island, so losing half the chicks could be devastating to the penguin population there.

US ADDICTS GETTING OLDER: America’s addicts are getting older. According to a US government study, the proportion of substance abuse treatment admissions involving people who were at least 50 years old nearly doubled between 1992 and 2008. While some of these people first started experimenting with drugs later in life, the study found that three-quarters of older Americans admitted for treatment were using drugs before the age of 25.

HEIR FIGHTS DOGGY FOR TRUST FUND: Moms are so embarrassing, especially the ones who leave their pet Chihuahua named Conchita a $3 million trust fund and the run of a Miami Beach mansion when they die. Bret Carr, however, the son of the recently deceased Gail Posner, is fighting his mom’s last wishes challenging the legality of a will which left Conchita living, well, a dog’s life. In a lawsuit, Carr is claiming household aides drugged his mother and forced her into giving them—and the dog—millions. According to Carr, the aides even convinced Posner to hire a doggy publicist to promote Conchita as “one of the world’s most spoiled dogs.” Carr, a filmmaker, is not without his own troubles, including an arrest for passing bad checks. The case, profiled in Thursday’s Wall Street Journal, recalls the late Leona Hemsley who left $12 million to her pet Maltese named Trouble.

BILL GIVES PUBLIC WORKERS CLOUT: The Senate is moving closer to passing legislation that would require states to grant public-safety employees, including police, firefighters and emergency medical workers, the right to collectively bargain over hours and wages. The bill, known as the Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act, would mainly affect about 20 states that don’t grant collective-bargaining rights statewide for public-safety workers or that prohibit such bargaining. State and municipal associations, as well as business groups, oppose it, saying it will lead to higher labor costs and taxes, at a time of budget deficits.

LBN-COMMENTARY By Sanford R. VAN DER SLOOT CONFESSION RELEASED: How did Joran van der Sloot kill Stephany Flores? Peruvian authorities have released the transcripts of Van der Sloot’s confession. Van der Sloot says that Flores punched him in the face after reading his private emails. “At that moment impulsively, with my right elbow I hit her in the face exactly on top of the nose,” Van der Sloot says in the confession. “I think she started to faint. It affected me so that I grabbed her from the neck and strangled her for a minute.” “There was blood everywhere,” he continues. “What am I going to do now. I had blood on my shirt. There was also blood on the bed. So, I took my shirt and put it on her face, pressing hard, until I killed Stephany.”

U.S. FINDS VAST MINERAL DEPOSITS IN AFGHANISTAN: Has Afghanistan hit the natural-resources jackpot? A Pentagon study says it may have found untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan worth $1 trillion—far more than has ever been found in any previously known reserves. More importantly, according to senior U.S. government officials, the reserves could fundamentally change the Afghan economy, as well as the Afghan war itself. The deposits—which are full of iron, copper, cobalt, gold, and metals like lithium—are so enormous, in fact, that Afghanistan could become a mining capital of the world. “There is stunning potential here,” Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command, told The New York Times. “There are a lot of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant.” The newfound reserves will be critical in reshaping the country, which has a gross domestic product of only about $12 billion. Maybe the new discovery will make Americans care about the war in Afghanistan again.

OBAMA TO GIVE FIRST OVAL OFFICE SPEECH: President Obama will give his first Oval Office speech on Tuesday. His goal? Any decisions, however, won’t be announced until Tony Hayward, BP’s chairman and chief executive, has a midweek meeting with Obama—their first face-to-face contact since the spill. “We are considering all these issues and look forward to constructive conversations on Wednesday in the White House,” Andrew Gowers, a senior BP spokesman, told The New York Times.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The New York Post yesterday that he’s broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, “Adventures in Sunderland,” about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.  Laurence Sunderland, a sailing instructor who lives in the middle-class Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks with his pregnant wife and seven kids, opened their home to film crews four months ago.  “The show might be about family, it might be about Abigail’s trip. It’s something that was shopped around,” he said.

As a result, Britain’s first “forced marriage roadshow” will be unable to visit Birmingham, an area that is known to have some of the highest rates of forced marriages in the country.

The blockade was first imposed in 2007 after the militant group Hamas seized control of Gaza. It is designed to stop the smuggling of arms into the territory, the Israeli government says. Humanitarian aid is allowed into Gaza despite the blockade, but the ICRC says it is not enough.

LBN-COMMENTARY By PEGGY NOONAN: The most important overlooked story of the past few weeks was overlooked because it was not surprising. Also, because no one really wants to notice it. The weight of 9/11 and all its implications is so much on our minds that it’s never on our mind. I speak of the report from the inspector general of the Justice Department, issued in late May, saying the department is not prepared to ensure public safety in the days or weeks after a terrorist attack in which nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons are used. The Department of Homeland Security is designated as first federal responder, in the event of a WMD attack. However, every agency in government has a formal, assigned role. The most crucial job of Justice is to manage and coordinate law enforcement and step in if state and local authorities are too overwhelmed.

LBN TURNS 8 YEARS OLD; CALLED WEB NEWS PIONEER: The LBN E-Lert has turned 8 years old this June and with a daily readership of approximately 317,000 “influencers” per day, it ranks as one of the largest and most powerful daily news blogs in the world. Founded in 2002 with a paltry 500 readers, the LBN E-Lert has grown radically to its current place of prestige and prominence. “Getting readers is one thing but keeping them is yet another. Our reader growth has been phenomenal,” said LBN Editor Natgeda Remy. Many LBN readers said “the fact that the LBN is so fiercely independent brings great credibility to LBN.” The LBN E-Lert is now sent to all 50 of the United States and 24 foreign countries including China, India, Brazil, England, Mexico, Iran, France, Israel, among others.

OBAMA ASKS FOR $50B IN LOCAL AID: A year after passing a gigantic economic stimulus package, President Obama has requested a $50 billion injection of funds to help state and local governments. If Congress does not act quickly, he said in an open letter, there will have to be “massive layoffs of teachers, police, and firefighters.” But Congress may not be so quick to cooperate. Obama knows that even Democrats on Capitol Hill will prove difficult to convince in an election year in which government spending is a particularly divisive issue.

Brian Lee said in a statement.

STARS TO TURN OUT FOR TONYS: When theater’s biggest awards show airs tonight, get ready to rock. This year’s telecast is set to heavily feature rock ‘n’ roll, as all four nominees for Best Musical place it front and center. The top award for musicals is favored to go to Memphis, the most traditional of the bunch and the only one of the four nominees to have an original score written for the theater. Its competition includes Fela!, the critically praised biography of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti; American Idiot; the stage adaptation of a 2004 Green Day album; and the ‘50s-themed Million Dollar Quarter. The telecast, airing at 8 p.m. EST tonight on CBS and hosted by former Will & Grace star Sean Hayes, will also feature a slew of Hollywood celebrities nominated for their Broadway turns, among them Jude Law, Laura Linney, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Scarlett Johansson.

U.S. SETS DEADLINE FOR NEW BP PLAN: As oil continues to wash up on the Gulf Coast, the U.S. is baring its teeth at BP, telling the oil giant it has two days to come up with a more aggressive strategy for containing the leak—though it is not clear what will happen if BP does not find a suitable answer. “I am concerned that your current plans do not provide for maximum mobilization of resources to provide the needed collection capacity consistent with the revised flow estimates,” U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral James Watson wrote in a letter.

AROUND 200 ARRESTED IN ANNIVERSARY PROTESTS: Iranians marked the one-year anniversary of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s controversial reelection with little violence, as large numbers of riot police and security officials roamed the streets. There were only scattered reports of clashes between protesters and police forces around Tehran, the capital—the deputy police chief estimated the number of arrests to be “only a small number,” while the Human Rights Activist News Agency cited the number as closer to 200.

Now that he’s pared Time Warner to its essential parts — film and TV production and distribution, cable networks and magazine publishing — Bewkes has the Time Warner troops focused on attacking the challenges vexing traditional media and entertainment while he faces a pivotal decision in the coming months about leadership at Warner Bros.    ***“God of Love,” a picture by Luke Matheny of New York University, earned the top honor for narrative feature at the 37th annual Student Academy Awards, held Saturday at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

LBN-INVESTIGATES: In 1890, the United States Board on Geographic Names declared that all city names ending in ‘burgh’ should drop the final ‘h.’ but in 1911, after protests from citizens, the board said Pittsburgh, Pa., could keep the extra letter.

LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***Lorne Michaels, the king of “Saturday Night Live” for the past four decades, is getting a tarnished crown. While Michaels is widely revered as a genius — he discovered Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell and Tracy Morgan — critics say the show peaked in the last century. And Michaels — whose NBC deal gives his company control of the “Late Night” hour after “The Tonight Show” — is also responsible for the rise of Conan O’Brien, who was an “SNL” writer, and Jimmy Fallon, who was an “SNL” cast member. O’Brien bombed as the “Tonight” host, and Fallon’s ratings are down 20 percent from a year ago. Plus, while Michaels produced “Three Amigos” and “Wayne’s World,” he was also responsible for such turkeys as “Stuart Saves His Family” and “MacGruber,” which grossed just $8.5 million in three weeks, even less than its paltry $10 million production budget.   ***Ten day after signing with WME, Justin Long has left and he has signed with CAA.   ***The 56th edition of the Taormina Film Festival got underway Saturday in three dimensions, with Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 3″ becoming the first major 3D film to premiere in an outdoor venue, the festival’s famous Teatro Antico.   ***Eleven-year-old Jaden Smith, with an assist from Jackie Chan, overpowered a reconstituted A-Team at the North American box office on Friday as Sony’s “The Karate Kid” took a commanding lead with an estimated $18.8 million.   ***Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox” topped the 50th Annecy Intl. Animated Film Festival taking its best-feature Crystal - the toon world’s equivalent of winning Cannes’ Palme d’Or. “Fox” also nabbed Annecy’s Audience Award - a prestigious plaudit at a fest which is swamped by animation school students from France and beyond.

VIOLENCE SPREADS IN KYRGYZSTAN: Despite curfews and a state of emergency, ethnic violence continued to rock Kyrgyzstan over the weekend, leaving dozens of people dead and more than 1,000 injured. The fighting is centered on the city of Osh, where clashes between Uzbek and Kyrgyz youths sparked riots on Thursday night. Losing control of the situation, the Kyrgyz interim government—which came to power after a violent uprising this spring—has given police permission to shoot protesters in the street. Now, the riots are also threatening to spread to the city of Jalal-Abad, where more than 5,000 young people gathered to demand transportation to Osh. Uzbekistan has now closed its border with Kyrgyzstan, while Russia has said it saw no reason to get involved yet.

SEARCH FOR ARK. FLOOD SURVIVORS: A flash flood in Arkansas has on Friday has left 18 people dead.  The search continues for 3 people who are still missing. Authorities had initially feared that up to 23 people went missing at a campground, but they now say that at most 3 are missing. The water level of the Little Missouri River has receded from its height of 20 feet yesterday to 6 feet Saturday, allowing rescuers to increase their search efforts by canoe, kayak, on foot, and on horseback. Governor Mike Beebe held a news conference, announcing that President Obama has pledged federal assistance and offered his condolences. “There’s not much you can say, you try to be whatever comfort you can, they’re virtually in a state of shock,” the governor said.

LBN-SPORTS INSIDER:   ***Goal! Both England and the U.S. scored one goal each in their highly anticipated World Cup faceoff Saturday, the first in 60 years. In a group full of leaders (nine of the 23 players on the English team have been team captains at some point); England’s captain Steven Gerrard led his team to an early fourth-minute advance by scoring the first goal. The ball barely slipped from U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard’s gloves. The U.S. came back in the 40th minute of the game when Clint Dempsey scored in another close call, just bouncing of England’s Robert Green’s hand. Dempsey now holds the distinction of being only the second American to score in two World Cups, alongside Brian McBride.   ***That sound you’ve been hearing during every World Cup game, the high-pitched buzzing coming from plastic horns in the stands, could be on its way out. South Africa’s organizing committee is considering a ban on the three-foot plastic horns, known as vuvuzelas, after several broadcasters complained that they are drowning out the natural atmosphere of a soccer game—and because they are annoying. Even players, like France captain Patrice Evra, have argued they are having a negative impact on the tournament.

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***It’s pretty shocking, Joe Jackson is blaming the inaction of his wife, Katherine, for Michael Jackson’s demise.  Allegedly because Katherine didn’t want to penetrate MJ’s zone of privacy. Joe sat down with News of the World to explain his theory — that he was concerned that Michael was “looking kinda funnad and frail”  So Joe says he asked Katherine to see Michael “keep him cheered up.”  But Joe says Katherine refused because she didn’t want to invade his privacy. Joe says he and Katherine argued about it before Michael’s death, but Katherine was firm.   ***Hold the wedding bells!
