Late Breaking News

PETRAEUS CONDEMNS U.S. CHURCH’S PLAN TO BURN QURANS: The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a small Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

“It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort,” Gen. Petraeus said in an interview. “It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community.”

OBAMA TO RAISE INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING: President Obama will call for $50 billion in spending on roads, rail, and airports when he announces a new package to boost the flagging economy Monday. More money will be spent over six years on infrastructure, and the total cost hasn’t been determined, but the $50 billion is a large chunk. The president wants to see 4,000 miles of railways maintained and built for coast-to-coast travel, plus rebuilding 150,000 of roads and bettering 150 miles of runway at airports. This plan focuses on long-term growth instead of short-term job gains, and is aimed at boosting the economy—or voters’ attitudes about the economy—for the midterm elections.

LBN-INVESTIGATES: In May 2010, there were 154.6 million people 16 and older in the nation’s labor force.

NETANYAHU SEES HOPE IN PEACE TALKS: Making their first public statements since peace talks began in Washington this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and lead Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat spoke in optimistic tones about the prospect of an agreement. Netanyahu referenced “a sense of readiness that exists in the Arab world.” Erekat struck a similar tone, saying, “This is the time for decisions.” Despite the optimism, the talks must reckon with a history of failure, and the upcoming end to Israel’s moratorium on West Bank settlements on September 26 could stop the talks entirely if Israel does not extend it. So far, the leaders have organized a framework for the negotiations, with Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas agreeing to meet every two weeks for a year. Also in their favor, American diplomats have committed to staying involved for the entire process.

LBN-THE “INSIDE” STORY:  A senior Iranian cleric has dismissed the Nazi Holocaust during World War II as a “superstition created by the West”. Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi (pictured) proclaimed over the weekend: “The Holocaust is nothing but superstition, but Zionists say that people of the world should be forced to accept this. Americans and Westerners are affected by superstitions such as the Holocaust.”

COMPANIES FUND LAWMAKERS’ CHARITIES: New rules, passed in 2007, were supposed to limit the amount of influence corporations could have on Congress, but, according to a New York Times investigation, companies have found another way to make their presence felt: giving money to lawmakers’ charities. Companies like AT&T and Chevron give generously, sometimes up to $5 million, to foundations created by congressmen or their families. Last fall, Altria, a cigarette maker, sent thousands of dollars to charities of House members, while legislation concerning the sale of cigarettes over the Internet was being considered. “We are not apologetic about it at all: it is part of our overall effort to work with policy makers,” a spokesman for Duke Energy, which gives money to these charities, said. “Social settings are always a good way to get to know people.”

BRITAIN MAY REOPEN PHONE HACKING CASE: The U.K. could reopen its investigation into a tabloid that managed to eavesdrop on famous people’s private phone calls, seeking new evidence from The New York Times, which interviewed a former reporter for the tabloid. Sean Hoare told the newspaper that the former editor of New of the World, Andy Coulson, personally asked Hoare to listen in. Coulson is now the head of communications for the prime minister, and has said he had no knowledge that the tabloid was tapping into celebrities’ and politicians’ calls. British police want a transcript of the interview with Hoare. News of the World is accusing the Times of making up stuff to hurt a competitor.

U.S. HELPS FIGHT IN IRAQI ATTACK: U.S. combat operations in Iraq may be over, but the violence is not. In broad daylight Sunday, suicide bombers and armed insurgents stormed the Baghdad headquarters of Iraq’s army, claiming at least 18 lives and injuring 39 others. American troops joined the battle, providing “suppressive fire while [Iraqi] soldiers located the two terrorists that entered the compound,” according to a military spokesman, though no U.S. troops were among the casualties. The U.S. also contributed helicopters, aerial drones, and other aides to the Iraqis, a sign that the country’s military is still heavily reliant on U.S. guidance and supplies.

SUMMER’S BLEAK BOX OFFICE: Movie attendance this summer was the worst in 13 years, as 552 million people left the house to watch one of the season’s films. In total, the industry made $4.35 billion, an uptick of two percent from last year. With some 3-D movies bombing, Hollywood may take more care with choosing which films to present in the format in the future. Inception, the moody Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle, proved the summer’s winner, taking in $660 million. “The summer isn’t just for dopes,” a Warner executive cheered. But top honors go to Toy Story 3, which made more than $1 billion at the box office globally.

ARE RESTAURANT KITCHENS CLEANER THAN YOURS?: New research suggests that at least one in seven home kitchens would fail the sort of health inspection restaurants commonly undergo. The study, carried out in Los Angeles County, California, concluded that just 61 percent of home kitchens would receive an A or B grade on such a screening and that at least 14 percent would fail. In contrast, 98 percent of restaurants in that area receive a B or higher. The results were based on an online survey asking respondents about things like fridge temperature and food preparation and storage practices. Experts believe the results are not representative of all households and that the percentage of home kitchens that would pass such an inspection is actually lower than estimated.

HOUSING WOES BRING NEW CRY: Let Market Fall: The unexpectedly deep plunge in home sales this summer is likely to force the Obama administration to choose between future homeowners and current ones, a predicament officials had been eager to avoid.  Over the last 18 months, the administration has rolled out just about every program it could think of to prop up the ailing housing market, using tax credits, mortgage modification programs, low interest rates, government-backed loans and other assistance intended to keep values up and delinquent borrowers out of foreclosure. The goal was to stabilize the market until a resurgent economy created new households that demanded places to live.

LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***The Paramount Chairman and CEO, Brad Grey, who recently bought a home in Bel-Air has sold his six-bedroom, 11-bathroom Pacific Palisades house, and the WSJ reports. Buyer is Jordan Kaplan, CEO of Douglas Emmett, the locally based real estate investment trust. Purchase price: $21.5 million (down from the initial listing of just under $30 million). It’s the kind of place you wouldn’t mind hanging out at during the holiday weekend: outdoor kitchen with a wood-burning oven, sunken tennis court and a trout-stocked pond. Inside there’s, well, pretty much everything. Also from the Journal: An oceanfront Malibu estate that was listed for $49.95 million has been reduced by $10 million. The estate is owned by Jonathan Frank, a real-estate investor.

LBN-SPORTS INSIDER:   ***Only two Americans are left in the U.S. Open’s men’s bracket after John Isner was defeated by Mikhail Youzhny, the 12th seed. In a sluggish performance, Isner made several mistakes: he had 61 unforced errors and his serve was broken four times. Isner lost 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (5), 6-4 in 3 hours and 18 minutes—a match far shorter than the record-breaking marathon contest at Wimbledon earlier this year. Mardy Fish and Sam Querry have advanced to the fourth round.

LBN-COMMENTARY By CARLA COLLINS (Comedian & Author of Angels, Vampires and Douche Bags):  Angel: Modern Family-This show made sitcoms funny again and won a fist full of Emmys. ‘Nuff said. Vampire: Jesse James and Kat Von D-Sure they’re a perfect match considering both sport more ink than Obama’s health care bill but do we really need these two bloodsuckers making headlines? I just don’t want to picture them together. It would be like two Ed Hardy hoodies going at it.  Douche Bag: Baby Showers-I don’t want to be anywhere 30 white women are gathered without alcohol being present. These are heinous events where I’m obliged to take part in stupid crafts, drink tea and eat scones. Scones are like the soccer of the pastry world: kinda gay and no one cares about them in North America. Plus these showers now force the poor mom-to-be (who already looks like a puffy Val Kilmer in drag) to eat melted chocolate out of a disposable diaper. What kind of poor man’s “2 Girls, 1 Cup” am I witnessing? If I get invited to another one of these hellish occasions I’m bringing Nuvaring and a pit bull.

LBN-COMMENTARY By PAUL KRUGMAN: The inadequacy of the Obama administration’s initial economic stimulus has landed it — and the nation — in a political trap.

LBN-COMMENTARY By ROSS DOUTHAT: Obsessing about extremists and conspiracy theories, on the right and on the left, is often a way for the elites to gloss over their own failures.

LBN-COMMENTARY By ROBERT REICH (Former Secretary of Labor, Professor at Berkeley): The rich are better off with a smaller percentage of a fast-growing economy than a larger share of an economy that’s barely moving. We learned that lesson decades ago; until we remember it again, we’ll be stuck in the Great Recession.

MOSQUE BUILDING OWNERS NIXED $18M OFFER BEFORE TAKING $4.8M ONE: The original owners of the Ground Zero mosque site mysteriously spurned dozens of higher bids before selling the prime downtown real estate at a bargain-basement price.  The Pomerantz family, which had owned the building since the late 1960s and fielded offers after the patriarch died in 2006, rejected at least one bid that was nearly four times what prospective mosque builder Sharif El-Gamal eventually paid.  El-Gamal did offer what could be viewed as a sweetener to his $4.8 million bid in July 2009 — a job as a property manager for a son of the family, Sethian Pomerantz.

OBAMA READIES ECONOMIC PACKAGE: President Obama heads to the Midwest for an economy-related tour with less than two months until congressional elections: He speaks at a Labor Day rally in Milwaukee Monday and plans an economic speech in Cleveland Wednesday. He is scheduled to hold a news conference at the White House Friday. Late last week, Obama said at the White House that “new ideas” to boost the economy and help increase job hiring are on the way. Armed with the “positive” news that private payrolls climbed 67,000 in August, according to the Labor Department, the president will be promoting his policies in Wisconsin and Ohio. “I will be addressing a broader package of new ideas next week,” Obama said, adding that job numbers are still “not nearly good enough.” On top of these new measures, the president is asking Congress to help small businesses by passing legislation that includes $12 billion in tax breaks and $30 billion worth of aid to free up credit.

ANTI-WAR GROUPS LOSE MOMENTUM: Anti-war activists are struggling to mobilize, exhausted and disillusioned with the very president they catapulted to victory. Prominent anti-war activists are having difficulty raising money and convincing people to turn out for events, despite the increase in public opposition to the Afghan war. One reason for such a tepid movement is quite simply fatigue: “I was totally exhausted,” said United for Peace and Justice founder Leslie Cagan, “I have a long history of anti-war activism—about 45 years—but the last eight or nine years have been totally intense. In a post 9/11 world, it’s just nonstop.”

TROOPS OWED $324M IN BACK PAY: For many veterans, the prospect of free money from the government just seems too good to be true. Around 145,000 troops who were kept on duty beyond their original discharge date due to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks are eligible for cash bonuses totaling $324 million, but no one seems to want to collect them. Under a measure passed last October, military personnel who were forced to remain on duty because of the “stop-loss” policy, are eligible for $500 in back pay for each month of involuntary service — the average sum owed is between $3,500 and $3,800. Thousands of veterans, however, have ignored the letters reminding them to file the paperwork to collect their checks. “It is unusual, and because it’s unusual maybe that’s why some people are questioning whether this is legitimate,” said the Pentagon official in charge of enlisted personnel management.

LBN-HEALTH WATCH: US researchers say the severity of multiple sclerosis (MS) may change with the seasons, citing brain scans of patients showing higher levels of disease activity in the spring and summer. It is not clear why changes in weather should have this sort of effect, but it does have significant implications for researchers studying effectiveness of drug treatments for MS. Clinical trials assessing a new medication’s effectiveness often last between six and 12 months. Thus, with medications for MS, the time of year in which such a trial is carried out may impact the results.

ADULT SERVICES CENSORED ON CRAIGSLIST: Online classified service Craigslist’s decision to censor its adult services section could be a model for other websites, a leader in the fight against prostitution ads said Saturday. “This step is very much in the right direction,” said Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who spearheaded a letter from 17 attorneys general who recently banded together to urge Craigslist to discontinue its adult services section.

‘MACHETE’ OPENS WEEKEND AT #1: As summer film season officially ends, the crime film Machete pulled in $3.9 million on Friday at the domestic box office, just beating George Clooney’s latest The American, which took in $3.8 million. Last weekend’s top earner, Takers slipped into third place, while Warner Bros latest from the department of syrupy romantic comedies, Going the Distance opened fifth, raking in just $2.3 million.

Ashtiani will receive 99 lashes for purportedly appearing in the photo without her hijab. Her son Sajad Ghaderzadeh has appealed to the Vatican to intervene in her mother’s death sentence, which was temporarily halted in July following an international outcry. LBN-COMMENTARY By MAUREEN DOWD: Even in the thick of a historical tragedy, Tony Blair never seemed like a Shakespearean character.  He’s too rabbity brisk, too doggedly modern. The most proficient spinner since Rumpelstiltskin lacks introspection. The self-described “manipulator” is still in denial about being manipulated.  The Economist’s review of “A Journey,” the new autobiography of the former British prime minister, says it sounds less like Disraeli and Churchill and more like “the memoirs of a transatlantic business tycoon.”  Yet in the section on Iraq, Blair loses his C.E.O. fluency and engages in tortured arguments, including one on how many people really died in the war, and does a Shylock lament.

LBN-COMMENTARY By DAVID LETTERMAN: Tiger Woods’ divorce is final and he bought an apartment in New York City. It’s making New Yorkers forget about the whole mosque thing.

LBN-COMMENTARY By DOUG GILES: The Slum Lord Millionaire: Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf Man, it was hard picking an op-ed mark this week because the chum slick was so thick with fresh chunks of juicy lunacy from Islam and our pals on the left.  Here’s what I ping-ponged back and forth on Friday: Should I write about James Lee, the whiny and pathetic wannabe mass murderer? Y’know Mr. Lee, don’t ‘cha? He’s the radical pro-abortion, Al Gore ogling tree humper who got thumped by SWAT after grabbing hostages at the Discovery Channel. That’s a possible target of interest for a column (no pun intended) because liberals, not conservatives, it seems, are the ones who’re snapping lately.

LBN-COMMENTARY By MORRISSEY: We’re all lonely, but I’d rather be lonely by myself than with a long list of duties and obligations. I think that’s why people kill themselves, really. Or at least that’s why they think, ‘Thank heaven for death.’

LBN-COMMENTARY By ROBERT G. ZUCKERMAN (International Photographer): Should a Muslim employee at Disneyland be allowed to wear a headscarf at work? Well, if they are in costume as Mickey Mouse then no, but remember that Disney profited greatly from Aladdin and many Arabian characters, many of whom wore traditional head dressing and other garb. So in this instance, absolutely yes and in any other non-Disney character position, absolutely yes!

LBN-COMMENTARY By LIZA LEWIS: A Muslim employee at Disneyland should not be allowed to wear a headscarf at work.  Absolutely not!!!  “Give an inch, take a mile”!  I am so sick and tired of this politically correct crap.  It’s Disneyland’s policy, pure and simple.  It wasn’t too long ago that we had that idiot woman in Florida trying to have her picture taken wearing a veil concealing her face at the DMV!  I say the buck stops here.  We are not the UK!

U.S. TO EASE UP ON CORRUPTION FIGHT:  Corruption may be rampant among Afghan officials, but for the time being, dealing with it will not be a priority for the United States. Military commanders are shifting to a strategy which would see them look the other way on some corruption because they are worried about creating power vacuums for the Taliban to exploit. “There are areas where you need strong leadership, and some of those leaders are not entirely pure,” said a senior defense official. “But they can help us be more effective in going after the primary threat, which is the Taliban.” Until now, the U.S. had taken a hard line on graft in Afghan government, which seemed to reach all the way up to President Hamid Karzai’s senior aides—one of them was recently arrested (and later determined to be on the CIA’s payroll). The strategy has been developed primarily by the military and it is unclear how far the White House and State Department are willing to back it.

OBAMA TO OFFER TAX CUTS TO SPUR HIRING: President Obama says he’ll offer a new package of tax cuts and other incentives for businesses to hire people, as the unemployment rate rose to 9.6 percent in August. That’s the first time the jobless rate has risen since April; last month, about 54,000 new jobs were lost. Obama plans to outline his proposal Wednesday, when he discusses the economy in a speech in Cleveland. New incentives include: extending research and development tax credits, boosting spending on infrastructure including highways, and keeping the part of the Bush tax cuts that help the middle class. With only eight weeks till the midterm elections, there’s not enough time for the president’s plan to help the economy much before voting begins. No massive stimulus plan will be offered.

BERNANKE SAYS HE FAILED TO SEE FINANCIAL FLAWS:  Ben S. Bernanke, who told Congress in 2007 that the subprime mortgage crisis was “likely to be contained,” said Thursday that he had failed to recognize flaws in the financial system that amplified the housing downturn and led to an economic disaster. Under pointed but polite questioning from members of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, Mr. Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, signaled that the central bank was eager to embrace its expanded powers under the Dodd-Frank financial regulatory law that President Obama signed in July.

GROWTH IN JOBS BEATS ESTIMATES, EASING CONCERNS: American businesses added more jobs in the last three months than originally estimated, calming fears of a double-dip recession. Yet the pace of growth signaled that the wheels of the economic recovery were still spinning in place.  The private sector added 67,000 jobs in August, with some of the strongest gains in health care, food service and temporary help, according to the Labor Department. That was higher than consensus forecasts, and the government upwardly revised its numbers for June and July, suggesting that job creation was slightly stronger over the summer than originally reported.

BP REPLACES BLOWOUT PREVENTER: BP replaced the busted blowout preventer on the well that leaked for months into the Gulf of Mexico, another step toward killing the well. No oil leaked while the old equipment was removed or the new one was installed. The new blowout preventer is needed to keep the oil from leaking during “bottom kill,” in which thick drilling mud and cement are pushed in from the bottom. That operation will probably begin next week.

SYRIA’S SOLIDARITY WITH ISLAMISTS ENDS AT HOME:  This country, which had sought to show solidarity with Islamist groups and allow religious figures a greater role in public life, has recently reversed course, moving forcefully to curb the influence of Muslim conservatives in its mosques, public universities and charities. The government has asked imams for recordings of their Friday sermons and started to strictly monitor religious schools. Members of an influential Muslim women’s group have now been told to scale back activities like preaching or teaching Islamic law. And this summer, more than 1,000 teachers who wear the niqab, or the face veil, were transferred to administrative duties.

LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***Comic Robert Schimmel, a frequent guest on Howard Stern’s radio show, has died after suffering serious injuries in a car accident. He was 60. Schimmel’s spokesman says Schimmel died Friday evening in a Phoenix hospital. Schimmel was a passenger Thursday in a car driven by his 19-year-old daughter Aliyah.  Aliyah Schimmel swerved to avoid another car and the vehicle she was driving rolled to the side of the freeway. She is hospitalized in stable condition.

WIESENTHAL WORKED FOR ISRAELI SPY AGENCY, BOOK ALLEGES:  Simon Wiesenthal, a Holocaust survivor who gained worldwide fame for decades as a one-man Nazi-hunting operation, was in fact frequently on the payroll of the Mossad, Israel’s spy agency, a new biography asserts.  The assertion, based on numerous documents and interviews with three people said to be Mr. Wiesenthal’s Mossad handlers, not only punctures a widely held belief about how he operated; it also suggests a need to re-evaluate the standard view that the Israeli government took no interest in tracking down Nazis until the 1960 capture in Argentina of Adolf Eichmann, and little thereafter.  Mr. Wiesenthal died in 2005 at the age of 96 in his Vienna home.

LBN-HEALTH WATCH:   ***According to researchers, teenagers who sleep less than eight hours a night on weeknights eat more fatty foods and snacks than their better-rested peers, particularly if they are girls. It is unclear why sleeping less might prompt teens to have poorer eating habits, but it has been shown that getting too little sleep lowers the body’s production of the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin, which can make a person feel hungrier and fuel cravings for high-calorie snacks. Over time, these bad eating habits can lead to weight gain and obesity.

One interesting note: a documentary film crew has been following Breitbart for months, and he’s working on an investigation of government treatment of black farmers that he calls a “huge scandal here that is going to upset the status quo in America.”

LBN-COMMENTARY By BILL O’REILLY: One of the most underreported ongoing stories around is the war in Mexico between the government and the drug cartels. Here are the grisly stats: More than 28,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence since 1996. In Iraq, 4,421 Americans have been killed. In Afghanistan, 1,141. The truth is that Mexican drug merchants are even more deadly than al-Qaida. They have more firepower and more money and are just as willing to kill civilians as are the homicidal jihadists. Yet, we Americans know little about the chaotic situation south of the border. The reason is that the drug cartels don’t seem to threaten us directly. But, of course, they do. Illegal narcotics from Mexico wind up in almost every community in the United States. The FBI estimates that about 70 percent of crimes from coast to coast are drug-fueled.

LBN-COMMENTARY By RABBI STEVEN LEDER (Author and Senior Rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles): A Muslim employee at Disneyland should be allowed to wear a headscarf while at work just as a Jew should be able to wear a kippah or a Christian a cross on a necklace.  Outward expressions piety, humility, modesty and faith ought to be not only tolerated but embraced as one of the great freedoms afforded to us as Americans.

LBN-COMMENTARY By BOB GRANT: Of course a Muslim employee should not be allowed to wear that absurd head dress.  This case illustrates why their way of life is incompatible with ours.  They want Sharia law?  Well, let them go back from whence they came and they can have Sharia law all they want.  Why do they come here to be with us infidels?  I am sick of our catering to them out of fear!

U.S. ECONOMY LOST 54,000 JOBS IN AUGUST; JOBLESS RATE ROSE TO 9.6%: The unemployment rate rose in August for the first time in four months as weak hiring by private employers wasn’t enough to keep pace with a large increase in the number of people looking for work. The Labor Department says companies added a net total 67,000 new jobs last month, down from July’s upwardly revised total of 107,000. Overall, the economy lost 54,000 jobs as 114,000 temporary census positions came to an end. State and local governments shed 10,000 positions. The jobless rate rose to 9.6 percent from 9.5 percent in July

LITTLE PROGRESS ON PEACE TALKS’ FIRST DAY: Aside from setting a schedule for the reopened peace talks, Israeli and Palestinian leaders ended the first day without much progress. The stakes are high when they meet again Sept. 16: Israel’s partial moratorium on new settlements in the West Bank is due to expire on Sept. 26. Jewish officials are largely opposed to extending it, but if construction resumes, the talks threaten to break down entirely. Any discussion of the settlements is usually bitterly fraught, with the sides unable to even agree which ones are at issue. “Talking about the settlement blocs without a detailed map is like playing chess with yourself,” one Israeli official said.

DEPOSITORS PANIC OVER BANK CRISIS IN AFGHANISTAN: One of the principal owners of the Afghan bank at the center of an accelerating financial crisis here said depositors had withdrawn $180 million in the past two days. He predicted a “revolution” in the country’s financial system unless the Afghan government and the United States moved quickly to help stabilize the bank. Khalilullah Frozi, one of the two largest shareholders of Kabul Bank, said reports indicating that the institution had lost as much as $300 million were overstated. But he predicted that if Afghan depositors continued to withdraw their money at the current rate, Kabul Bank would almost certainly collapse, undermining confidence in the nascent financial system the Afghans have been trying to build with American help.

BLASTS KILL 43 AT PAKISTAN RALLY:   A bomb blast at a rally in the city of Quetta, Pakistan killed 43 people and wounding over 100 on Friday. The attack follows three bombings in Lahore earlier this week, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility. Friday’s attack took place at Shi’ite rally in which people gathered to express support for the Palestinian people. Alongside disease, crop destruction and homelessness, a major aspect of the fallout from the floods that have devastated the South Asian nation is its Army’s inability to contend with Taliban attacks.

HURRICANE EARL BATTERS THE EAST COAST: Rain and winds from weakening Hurricane Earl, now a Category 2 storm, still packed a wallop when it hit North Carolina’s Outer Banks Thursday night. Hurricane conditions are expected to persist through Friday for North Carolina’s coast. According to the National Hurricane Center, which issued an advisory at 2 a.m. EDT on Friday: “On the forecast track the center of Earl will pass near the North Carolina Outer Banks tonight will approach southeastern New England on Friday night.”

BP: NO MORE OFFSHORE DRILLING, NO MORE FUNDS: BP claims that if Congress passes legislation barring the oil giant from getting new offshore-drilling permits, it may not have enough money to pay for the damage caused by the Deep-water Horizon oil spill. A ban would also stunt the company’s ambitious restoration efforts, they argue. “If we are unable to keep those fields going, that is going to have a substantial impact on our cash flow,” David Nagle, BP’s executive vice president for BP America, told The New York Times. Another overhaul bill, passed by the house July 30, concerns BP because of an amendment that would bar companies with 10 or more fatalities on onshore or offshore drilling facilities from Outer Continental Shelf drilling permits. “If BP needs to sell assets to meet its financial obligations, that’s a decision they have to make,” said Daniel Weiss, chief of staff for Rep. George Miller (D-CA), who wrote the provision. Meanwhile, BP announced Friday that the cost of the cleanup has risen by another $2 billion over the last month to a total of around $8 billion.

NUMBER OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN U.S. FELL, STUDY SAYS: The number of illegal immigrants in the United States, after peaking at 12 million in 2007, fell to about 11.1 million in 2009, the first clear decline in two decades, according to a report published Wednesday by the Pew Hispanic Center. The reduction came primarily from decreases among illegal immigrants from Latin American countries other than Mexico, the report found. The number of Mexicans living in the United States without legal immigration status did not change significantly from 2007 to 2009. Some seven million Mexicans make up about 60 percent of all illegal immigrants, still by far the largest national group, the Pew Center said.

FBI AGENT SAYS AMANDA KNOX IS INNOCENT: FBI Special Agent Steve Moore, who once claimed that Amanda Knox was guilty of murdering her British roommate, now says there’s no doubt she’s innocent. “When Amanda Knox gets out, if she needs a roommate, I’ll send my daughter over,” Moore told Good Morning America. “The evidence is completely conclusive.” After independently researching and analyzing Knox’s case for the past year, having obtained the crime scene video, autopsy photos, and legal documents, Moore said his opinion has quickly changed. “There is no DNA evidence. What they’re saying is that whoever killed Meredith cleaned up in Amanda’s bathroom. That’s all they say,” Moore said. “They found Amanda’s DNA in her own bathroom? Astounding.” Since her November 2007 arrest, Knox has spent about three years in an Italian prison.

NEW YORK POLL FINDS WARINESS ABOUT MUSLIM CENTER: Two-thirds of New York City residents want a planned Muslim community center and mosque to be relocated to a less controversial site farther away from ground zero in Lower Manhattan, including many who describe themselves as supporters of the project, according to a New York Times poll.  The poll indicates that support for the 13-story complex, which organizers said would promote moderate Islam and interfaith dialogue, is tepid in its hometown.

REPUTED BIN LADEN ADVISER GETS LIFE TERM IN STABBING:  A reputed former top adviser to Osama bin Laden who stabbed a federal jail guard in the eye with a sharpened comb in 2000, leaving the guard with severe brain damage, was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.  The defendant, Mamdouh Mahmud Salim, was a founding member of Al Qaeda and helped manage Mr. Bin Laden’s businesses, prosecutors have said. He was arrested in Germany in 1998 after the bombings of two American embassies in East Africa, and extradited to the United States, where he was awaiting trial on broader terrorism charges at the time of the assault.

YOUNG VOTERS ABANDONING OBAMA:  American youth’s crush on Obama is cooling. Though many young people are still passionate about liberal social issues, a weak job market and faltering economy has led many to lose confidence in the Democratic Party. According to a new Pew survey, compared to 2008, far fewer 18- to 29-year-olds today identify as Democrats. This shift has serious implications for the upcoming midterms; the youth vote’s ability to upend the results in November and hand back a majority to Republicans can certainly compromise Obama’s agenda.

A SUCCESSOR IN NORTH KOREA?: To the experts following North Korean politics, the country’s upcoming Worker’s Party gathering looks like déjà vu. It is eerily reminiscent of the gathering 30 years ago that saw Kim Jong Il come to power and speculation is swirling that he is preparing to pass the mantle to his youngest son, Kim Jong Un. South Korean activists believe that the party congress will begin tomorrow and last through the weekend, with “the reorganization of its leadership structure” topping the agenda. The elder Kim, whose health is believed to be deteriorating, has already made two trips to China this year, possibly to earn an endorsement for his son. Kim Jong Un is a mysterious figure and little is known about.

LBN-COMMENTARY By Michael Levine: Curtailing entrepreneurial freedom with high taxation is a bad play for America because our gamble is (and it’s been our gamble for well over 200 years) that the explosion of energy that we arouse by allowing everyone to pursue happiness creates such enormous creativity that it downs the more disciplined efficient systems of centralized dictatorship.

OOPS—-PARIS OWNS PURSE THAT APPEARS IDENTICAL TO ONE SHE CLAIMED WAS BORROWED NIGHT OF COCAINE ARREST:

A photograph posted by Paris Hilton more than a month prior to her drug arrest in Las Vegas could blow up her claim that the purse she was carrying — which contained cocaine — did not belong to her, RadarOnline.com is reporting.

In mid-July, Paris Tweeted a photograph of a purse and wrote: “Love My New Chanel Purse I Got Today :) ” That purse appears to be identical to the purse she was carrying when arrested on cocaine possession charges in Las Vegas last weekend.

MUSLIM CLERIC CALLS FOR BEHEADING OF DUTCH POLITICIAN:

A well-known Australian Muslim cleric has called for the beheading of Dutch anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders, a newspaper said on Friday.

Wilders’ Freedom Party scored the biggest gains in June 9 polls and is currently negotiating to form a new minority government with the Liberals and Christian Democrats. Polls show Wilders would win a new election if one were called now.

Wilders demanded to know why he had learnt about the threat from the newspaper and not from Dutch authorities who are guarding him after a film and remarks he made angered Muslims around the world.

De Telegraaf, the Netherlands’ largest newspaper, led its front page on Friday with a story on the speech by Feiz Muhammad.

BUSH TAX CUTS ON RICH MAY STAY: Democrats in Congress are on the verge of going against their president and supporting the extension of Bush era tax cuts, set to expire at the end of 2010. While Obama and congressional Democrats agree that the tax cuts should be extended to individuals earning less than $250,000 a year, the president would like to see those who make more start paying pre-2001 rates. But moderate Democrats are balking. The idea of raising taxes, even on America’s richest individuals, is proving a tough sell at home. “The economy is very weak right now. Raising taxes will lower consumer demand at a time when we want people putting more money into the economy,” said Departing Sen. Evan Bayh, Democrat of Indiana. Bayh is joined by fellow Democrats Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota in opposing what would be an increase on top-payers from 33 and 35 percent taxes to 36 and 39.6 percent.

EAST COAST WAITS FOR HURRICANE EARL: The East Coast is nervously watching Hurricane Earl—now a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 M.P.H.—as it pushes northward, as any shift in its trajectory could threaten millions of people. North Carolina tourists packed up on the gorgeous day that often precedes a hurricane, turtle nests were moved to a safer place, and the USS Cole hurried home to Norfolk, Virginia, a few days early after finishing a mission in Somalia.

COAST GUARD SAYS OIL RIG EXPLODED IN GULF OF MEXICO: An offshore oil rig exploded on Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive oil spill, the Coast Guard told the Associated Press. Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said that the blast was reported by a commercial helicopter company on Thursday morning. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats are en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.

CHILE HIDES BAD NEWS FROM MINERS: Government officials in Chile have instructed family members to keep bad news out of any letters they write to the 33 miners trapped there. The officials have also decided to censor the news reaching the men, cutting out crime stories which might disturb them. Hot food arrived Wednesday for the first time for men who have been stuck thousands of feet underground for nearly a month. Not everyone agrees with the decision to censor the information reaching the miners. Said one psychiatrist, “I would not screen anything; if you start to do that you are setting up a base for mistrust. The miners will then ask, ‘What else are they hiding from me?’” Others worry that announcing that five of the men are suffering from depression may have been a bad idea. Many also say that the best interests of the men may be at odd with the desire of the Chilean government to bolster its image.

MAKER OF BOTOX SETTLES INQUIRY: Allergan, the maker of Botox, agreed on Wednesday to pay $600 million to settle charges that it illegally promoted and sold the drug through 2005 for unapproved uses like treating headaches.  That settlement, the latest in a continuing Justice Department crackdown on off-label drug promotion by pharmaceutical companies, comes with an unusual postscript. In recent months, the Food and Drug Administration has been seriously weighing approval of Botox for treatment of chronic migraines, a remedy that has been cited as beneficial in new studies and which was ratified last month in Britain.

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***Former Lehman Brothers head Dick Fuld said the Federal Reserve should not have let his bank fail in September 2008, saying that as the financial crisis began, the Fed expanded access to its credit facilities to other banks but excluded Lehman. In his testimony before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, Fuld blamed other banks for insisting on billions of dollars in cash against loans to Lehman, and that Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs would have collapsed without the aid of the federal government.   ***Many leading executives of the Starbucks Corporation read the LBN E-Lert daily.   ***A new study says that young, single, and childless women under 30—who live in cities—make more money than their male counterparts. But if any one of those factors changes—for instance, married women, or women who don’t live in a city—they end up earning less money than men. James Chung of Research Advisers, who spent more than a year analyzing Census data, said education, is the reason for salary increases for women. Those with college degrees tend to earn more than those without, and more degrees are awarded to women than men. Even though some cities did not hold true on the trend, those cities tended to have industries that were based more on male-dominated industries, such as software development or military-technology contracting.

DISCOVERY GUNMAN’S ENVIRONMENTALISM: The suspected hostage-taker at the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring, Maryland, was shot and killed by authorities after a four-hour standoff. Police aimed and shot when the gunman, James J. Lee, pointed his handgun at one of the three hostages. Lee, a radical environmentalist, had a long history of conflict with the Discovery Channel, and a manifesto he posted to a website proclaimed that “Humans are the most destructive, filthy, polluted creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture.” Lee was arrested in 2008 for creating a disturbance outside Discovery and evaluated by state psychiatrists at the time, though they “couldn’t find anything wrong with me,” Lee said at the time.

FRANCE AWAITS CARLA BRUNI SEX TALES: France is eagerly awaiting “explosive revelations” about the love life of French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy as this month sees the release of a book so controversial publishers haven’t even leaked the title. Author Besma Lahouri is said to expose Bruni-Sarkozy’s secret lovers, plastic surgeons, and obsession with fame and money. Lahouri, author of a popular biography of French soccer player Zinedine Zidane, is in hiding while security guards protect the book. The first lady, whose ex-boyfriends are already known to include Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, declared just before her marriage to French President Nicolas Sarkozy that “monogamy bores me.”

LBN-INVESTIGATES: Many U.S. Presidents have been college educated, and the college with the most alumni in the Oval Office is Harvard, but of the 43 men to have served as president, eight never went to college: George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Grover Cleveland (who was both the 22nd and 24th president).

CATHERINE ZETA-JONES ANGRY AT DOC & DOUGLAS’ CANCER:  Catherine Zeta-Jones is mad — at the cancer that threatens hubby Michael Douglas’ life, and at the doctors who didn’t catch it sooner. She told People magazine, “It makes me furious they didn’t detect it earlier .  He sought every option and nothing was found.” Zeta-Jones said she fears witnessing Douglas lose energy during his arduous treatment: “I know maybe I should be stronger, but emotionally I just don’t want to see that the hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired.”

In his new book, “The Grand Design,” the British scientist says unraveling a complex series of theories will explain the universe. In an extract published Thursday in The Times, Hawking wrote that it was “not necessary to invoke God.”

LBN-HEALTH WATCH: Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to help promote heart health by preventing the formation of blood clots and reducing the risk of coronary heart disease, however, a new study suggests that low doses of omega-3 fatty acids do not provide additional benefits to heart attack survivors taking standard medications for their heart conditions. The patients in the study given a margarine enriched with omega-3 oils had the same risk of a second heart attack as those who did not supplement their diet with added omega-3s.

LBN-SPORTS INSIDER:   ***Andy Roddick failed to make it out of the second round at the U.S. Open as the American tennis star fell to the 44th-rank Janko Tipsarevic in four sets. At times, Roddick seem to come undone during the raucous night match at Arthur Ashe Stadium Wednesday, pacing the baseline after being called for a third-set foot fault. “In the moment, I was just stupefied,” Roddick said of the linesman’s call. The moment recalled a worse meltdown when Serena Williams threatened at lineswoman at last year’s U.S. Open. Thursday’s matches include second-seeded Roger Federer and the 14th-seeded Maria Sharapova.

LBN-COMMENTARY By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF: The salmonella outbreak underscores that this industrial model of farms as meat and egg factories can be a health hazard. (Read more on the LBN Blog)

LBN-COMMENTARY By JERRY LEWIS:  I would smack her (Lindsay Lohan) in the mouth if I saw her I would say, ‘You deserve this and nothing else – whack!’ And then if she’s not satisfied, I’d put her over my knee and spank her. The same thing with Paris Hilton – those children are begging for help. What they’re doing is saying ‘Can you please help me?’ When people who have celebrity give nothing in return, they need a spanking and a reprimand.

LBN-COMMENTARY By PETER BART (V.P. of Variety): The battered denizens of Wall Street confront an array of challenges as they return to work next week. Not only will they have to clean up their act, they’ll also have to tidy up their language. Which leads me to wonder: Will Hollywood be far behind? The mandates issued from Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and their brethren are clear-cut: When texting colleagues or clients, skip the expletives and excretive or face the firing squad. All communications must be conveyed in “professional, appropriate and courteous language,” as Morgan Stanley’s hierarchs put it.

LBN-COMMENTARY By NANCY GRACE:  I will never forget the moment in court when Laci’s mother described Laci being buried with the remains of her unborn baby boy. I would have liked to personally have prosecuted Scott Peterson.

LBN-COMMENTARY By HARA ESTROFF MARANO (Author & Editor at Large of Psychology Today): If Disneyland doesn’t have a dress code forbidding the wearing of headscarves (for any reason), then yes, a Disneyland employee should be allowed to wear a headscarf. Lots of people wear many different kinds of head gear. A more troubling question would be what about the wearing of a full burqa, including face covering (niqab). There is something fundamentally incompatible with such covering, which is required of only one gender, and democracy, including our belief in equality of personhood.

OBAMA TEAM WEIGHS NEW STIMULUS: You can hear Senate Republicans preparing their filibuster already: The Obama team is mulling additional economic stimulus, though there is apparently debate whether it should take the shape of tax cuts to small businesses, which would presumably attract Republican support, or ideas that will likely have more economic impact but encounter GOP resistance, like state aid and infrastructure spending. Among the ideas being floated is a cut in the payroll taxes used to fund Medicare and Social Security—an ideas Republicans support.

OBAMA DECLARES AN END TO COMBAT MISSION IN IRAQ:  President Obama declared an end on Tuesday to the seven-year American combat mission in Iraq, saying that the United States has met its responsibility to that country and that it is now time to turn to pressing problems at home.  In a prime-time address from the Oval Office, Mr. Obama balanced praise for the troops who fought and died in Iraq with his conviction that getting into the conflict had been a mistake in the first place. But he also used the moment to emphasize that he sees his primary job as addressing the weak economy and other domestic issues — and to make clear that he intends to begin disengaging from the war in Afghanistan next summer.

ISLAMIC CENTER IMAM: Fight Could Shape Future Of Muslims In America: The imam leading plans for an Islamic center near the site of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York said the fight is over more than “a piece of real estate” and could shape the future of Muslim relations in America. The dispute “has expanded beyond a piece of real estate and expanded to Islam in America and what it means for America,” Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf told a group Tuesday that included professors and policy researchers in Dubai.

BLAIR THROWS BROWN UNDER THE BUS:  The one man whom Brits seem to dislike more than Brown, his predecessor Tony Blair, says in his new memoirs that he knew Brown would be a disaster. “It was never going to work,” Blair writes in A Journey, which is published in Britain on Wednesday. He calls Brown “maddening” and says that Brown threatened to bring him down over the cash-for-honours scandal. Blair says he was so distraught that he turned to drink. “The difficulty is when he was my number two, in sense, the chancellor to my prime minister, people may be overestimated his capacity to be prime minister,” Blair says in an interview set to air on Wednesday.

BLOOMBERG FOR TREASURY SEC?: We wouldn’t exactly recommend getting your political news from Page Six, but it’s still a fun rumor: New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg may be being wooed to join the Obama administration’s economic team, the New York Post reports. Bloomberg and Obama played golf for four hours Tuesday, and the mayor said the main topic was the economy. “Whispers,” the Post reports, say Obama asked Bloomberg to replace troubled Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. The tabloid says the mayor would be a bold choice that would add credibility before the midterm elections. Bloomberg has been trekking to Iowa and New Hampshire to give speeches on national problems—a major sign of 2012 president ambitions. Though he would likely have no chance to win the presidency, he could really hurt Obama in New York and Florida. So Obama has several incentives to bring him onto his team.

HOTTEST SUMMER EVER FOR NEW YORK CITY: This 95-degree forecast for September 1 isn’t making things any better: New York City endured the hottest summer on record this year, according to the National Weather Service, with an average high of 77.8 degrees. The summer, defined by the weather services as June through August, was worse than the 44-year-old record of 77.3, and worse than the 2006 heat wave that caused a days-long blackout for 100,000 New Yorkers. There was more than a month’s worth of 90+ degree days. About 80,000 pounds of ice cubes were used on the first day of the U.S. Open. And 17.2 million visited beaches in the city—Coney Island alone saw three times more people than in 2009. One dry ice company has been sending out delivery trucks to desperate ice cream stores as much as 15 hours a day.

LBN-COMMENTARY By TINA BROWN: Despite Obama’s moving speech, Bush will get the credit for Iraq—while 44 bogs down in Afghanistan, with little chance for similar redemption.

LBN-COMMENTARY By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN: President Obama is embarking on something I’ve never seen before — taking on two Missions Impossible at the same time. That is, a simultaneous effort to heal the two most bitter divides in the Middle East: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Shiite-Sunni conflict centered in Iraq. Give him his due. The guy’s got audacity. I’ll provide the hope. But kids, don’t try this at home.  Yet, if by some miracles the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that open in Washington on Thursday do eventually produce a two-state solution, and Iraqi Shiites and Sunnis do succeed in writing their own social contract on how to live together, one might be able to imagine a Middle East that breaks free from the debilitating grip of endless Arab-Israeli wars and autocratic Arab regimes.

LBN-COMMENTARY By MAUREEN DOWD: If we had wanted earth tones in the Oval Office, we would have elected Al Gore.  (Oh, yeah, we did.)  On the night we were reminded that George W. Bush ended up in the White House and heedlessly, needlessly started the war with Iraq, President Obama did his Mission Relinquished address from his redecorated man cave.  The Oval Office was done over by the chichi decorator Michael Smith, who was previously paid $800,000 for his part in refurnishing the lair of the former Merrill Lynch C.E.O. John Thain (a $1.2 million project featuring the notorious $35,000 antique cabinet, or commode).

LBN-COMMENTARY By HOSNI MUBARAK: It’s been 10 long years since the Palestinians and Israelis last came close to establishing a permanent peace, in January 2001 at Taba in Egypt. During my career in the Egyptian Air Force, I saw the tragic toll of war between the Arabs and Israel. As president of Egypt, I have endured many ups and downs in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Egypt’s decision to be the first Arab state to make peace with Israel claimed the life of my predecessor, Anwar el-Sadat. Ever since the day in 1981 that I witnessed his assassination by extremists, I have tried to turn the dream of a permanent peace in the Middle East into a reality.  Now, after a nearly two-year hiatus in direct negotiations, we are opening yet another chapter in this long history. Many claim that this new round of talks — which begins with meetings between President Obama; Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel; the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas; King Abdullah of Jordan; and myself here on Wednesday — is doomed to fail like all the others. (Read more on the LBN Blog)

LBN-COMMENTARY By JOHN STOSSEL:  You own a business, maybe a restaurant. You’ve got a lot to worry about. You have to make sure the food is safe and tastes good, that the place is clean and appealing, that workers are friendly and paid according to a hundred Labor Department and IRS rules.  On top of that, there are rules you might have no idea about. The bathroom sinks must be a specified height. So must the doorknobs and mirrors. You must have rails. And if these things aren’t right — say, if your mirror is just one inch too high — you could be sued for thousands of dollars.  And be careful. If you fail to let a customer bring a large snake, which he calls his “service animal,” into your restaurant, you could be in trouble.  All of this is because of the well-intentioned Americans With Disabilities Act, which President George H.W. Bush signed 20 years ago.

LBN-COMMENTARY By HOWARD LAPIDES:  I’m always looking for the angles. There is an angle for everything. From religion to your dry cleaner. Has anybody seen God lately? And, what is one hour Martinizing? I was at my weekly lunch with the guys We normally go to one of the Deli’s in LA—pick one—they are all crap except Langer’s downtown. Last week we tried a new Chinese joint in Studio city. I ordered diet coke. Finished it quick and the waiter politely asked if I wanted another. Finished it. Mr. Polite then asked if I wanted another one—and added—we charge for refills. I said, “what is this 1988?”. He said—its policy. It cost them three cents to refill my diet coke—by charging me 7 dollars for two refills—is bad will. 3 cents for good will. Dammit, that’s how they get ya”

ANOTHER GOVERNMENT FAILURE; 8-FOOT TALL PILES OF MANURE AT EGG FARMS Manure piled eight feet high, dead maggots squishing underfoot, and live mice and birds were found inside the massive Iowa egg farms thought to be responsible for the nationwide outbreak of salmonella. Federal investigators inspected Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms, which together have had to recall 500 million eggs in less than a month, and found several instances of unsanitary conditions. The salmonella bacterium is found in the feces of mice, birds, and other animals. The Food and Drug Administration found buildings to have holes or gaps in their walls, which make infiltration by pests easy. One hen house’s walls were warped by manure. The FDA said the two farms—which it had never inspected before—looked to be in violation of egg safety regulations that have been in place since July 9, as well as industry standards. Wright County Egg promised to fix the problems by mid-September.

MEXICO NABS DRUG LORD CALLED ‘THE BARBIE’: Mexico has caught “the Barbie,” a drug lord allegedly responsible for smuggling tons of cocaine and a horrifically violent turf war marked by decapitations and dead bodies hung from bridges. Texas-born Edgar Valdez Villarreal got his nickname from his fair complexion, and he’s the third major drug lord nabbed by Mexico in less than a year. Mexican President Felipe Calderon tweeted that Valdez was “one of the most-wanted criminals in Mexico and abroad,” and police released a photo of the drug lord on his knees with a policeman’s hand on his shoulder. In May, Valdez was charged in U.S. District Court in Atlanta with smuggling thousands of pounds of cocaine from 2004 to 2006, though Mexican authorities haven’t commented on extradition. While struggling to wrest control of the Beltran Leyva cartel from the brother of its founder Arturo Beltran Leyva, who was killed in a firefight with marines last year, Valdez led an assassination squad that spread drug violence across Mexico.

JOHN BOLTON: OBAMA WRECKED IRAQ: In his second Oval Office address, President Obama is addressing the nation tonight about the end of combat operations in Iraq. But John Bolton, the former ambassador to the United Nations under George W. Bush, argues on The Daily Beast that in less than two years in office, Obama has abandoned much of the international policies he advocated during the campaign, but it’s not enough. Many criticized President George W. Bush for attacking the wrong country—that Iran was the real threat, not Saddam Hussein, who had served as a check on the Persians. But, Bolton says, Iran was still bankrolling terrorism, and Saddam’s threat was real. He had used chemical weapons on his own people and threatened Kuwait and Israel. And now, those same critics who said Iran was the real threat are supporting Obama’s policies of using sanctions to stop Iran’s nuclear program and a swift withdrawal from Iraq—exactly the policies that will strengthen Iran.

GOP HAS RECORD LEAD BEFORE ELECTIONS: A new Gallup poll shows the GOP leading the Democratic Party by 10 points in a “generic ballot” test, which asks whether the voter prefers a Republican or Democratic candidate. That’s the GOP’s largest lead in the 68 years that the generic-ballot question has existed. Should Democrats panic? Well, a Newsweek poll showed voters split evenly 45-45 on the generic ballot. Pollster.com says the average lead according to polls for the GOP is 5.2 percent; still, some experts say a 2-point GOP lead would translate into a pickup of 50 House seats.

CLIMATE SKEPTIC CHANGES TUNE:  Bjorn Lomborg, the self-proclaimed “skeptical environmentalist” who is perhaps the world’s most famous climate-change skeptic, will declare climate change “undoubtedly one of the chief concerns facing the world today” and a “challenge humanity must confront” in an upcoming book. Lomborg has never denied that manmade climate change exists; rather, he has typically argued that it does not present much of a threat to mankind and that our resources would be better spent on other problems. In the book, Smart Solutions to Climate Change: Comparing Costs and Benefits, Lomborg calls for a $100 billion annual investment to fight climate change.

LBN-COMMENTARY By DAVID BROOKS: Though Iraq’s achievements remain fragile and incomplete, its progress must be acknowledged.

LBN-COMMENTARY By THOMAS SOWELL:  The proposed mosque near where the World Trade Center was attacked and destroyed, along with thousands of American lives, would be a 15-story middle finger to America. It takes a high IQ to evade the obvious, so it is not surprising that the intelligentsias are out in force, decrying those who criticize this calculated insult.

LBN-COMMENTARY By LINDSAY LOHAN: I’ve never abused prescription drugs. I never have—never in my life. I have no desire to. That’s not who I am. I’ve admitted to the things that I’ve done—to, you know, dabbling in certain things and trying things ’cause I was young and curious and thought it was like, O.K., ’cause other people were doing it and other people put it in front of me. And I see what happened in my life because of it.

LBN-COMMENTARY By ARIANNA HUFFINGTON: As a senator, Barack Obama spoke eloquently of Americans deciding that “their work, their possessions, their diversions, their sheer busyness, is not enough.” But the hunger for a larger purpose in public life remains unfulfilled. And the big turnout at Glenn Beck’s rally on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is more evidence of this unmet yearning. Beck delivered a speech noticeably devoid of partisan rhetoric — talking instead about values and morals and God and the power of individuals to change the world.

LBN-COMMENTARY By NORAH O’DONNELL (Chief Washington Correspondent, MSNBC): Make no mistake: what you feed your baby now will affect the rest of their lives. Babies who eat fresh fruits and vegetables grow up to be children who eat nutritiously.

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Her youth, her absent father and her own poor choice of role models led Lindsay Lohan astray, the actress admits in a revealing interview conducted last month, shortly before she began to serve her jail term and stint in treatment.  “I was irresponsible. And I’m not making excuses,” Lohan says, according to USA Today and the New York Post, quoting the 24-year-old from a new cover story in Vanity Fair.   ***It was a pretty little wedding for Pretty Little Liars actor Chad Lowe and his longtime girlfriend. Lowe, 42, and film producer Kim Painter, were married Saturday in front of family and a small group of friends in an Oceanside ceremony at Terranea Resort in Los Angeles.   ***Jim Carrey, long prone to bouts of depression, has come down with a major case of the blues after his ex-girlfriend Jenny McCarthy found love again and moved in with a super-buff former fitness model. Now pals fear the funnyman’s downward spiral may prompt a return of the condition that once forced him into treatment for mental health problems. “Jim isn’t himself these days – and he hasn’t been ever since he and Jenny split,” a close friend told sources.   ***Farrah Fawcett’s elderly father has died — just a few weeks after the one-year anniversary of the passing of his beloved daughter.   James Fawcett passed away at his home in Houston, Texas, last Monday, RadarOnline.com reports. He was 92. A funeral service was held on Friday.   ***Slash has filed for divorce. According to legal docs just filed in L.A. LBN-INVESTIGATES: Burger King’s Double Whopper with cheese contains 923 calories. A man would need to walk for about nine miles to burn it off. Adding french fries and a large cola brings the total calories to an amazing 1,500 calories (2/3 of an adult man’s recommended daily caloric intake).

MAD MEN, MONDERN FAMILY TOP EMMYS: Television’s most-glamorous night has wrapped in Los Angeles, with its share of predictable winners (Jane Lynch for Glee) and surprising upsets (Bravo’s Top Chef, which upset perennial favorite Amazing Race in the reality category). A flustered Edie Falco picked up an award for lead actress in a comedy for her role on Nurse Jackie, calling her win “the most ridiculous thing that has ever happened in the history of this award show.” In the drama categories, Bryan Cranston was “humbled and amazed” to pick up his third consecutive Emmy for Breaking Bad (his costar Aaron Paul also won), but Mad Men trumped the AMC show for Best Drama. For dramatic actress, The Closer’s Kyra Sedgwick finally nabbed an award after five nominations and thanked her “one and only love, Kev.” (That’d be Kevin Bacon.) Jon Stewart’s Daily Show trumped Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show, taking home its eighth consecutive trophy for best variety show. Veteran Al Pacino won for his role in the HBO Kevorkian film You Don’t Know Jack, Temple Grandin swept several TV movie categories, and Tom Hanks took the stage to accept the Best Miniseries award for The Pacific. Modern Family topped the list for Best Comedy, beating out the season’s other breakout hit, Glee.

BREWER CONDEMNS U.N. REPORT:  Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has attacked the State Department for including its legal challenge to Arizona’s immigration law in a report to the United Nations on human rights. Brewer called the inclusion of the Arizona law in the report “downright offensive” in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “The idea of our own American government submitting the duly enacted laws of a state of the United States to ‘review’ by the United Nations is internationalism run amok and unconstitutional,” Brewer wrote. A federal judge blocked the most controversial portions of the Arizona law earlier this summer. The language in the State Department report to the U.N. reads, “A recent Arizona law, S.B. 1070, has generated significant attention and debate at home and around the world.

OBAMA NOT WORRIED BY MUSLIM ‘RUMORS’:  President Obama addressed a recent poll that showed 18 percent of Americans think he’s a Muslim in an interview with NBC News on Sunday night. “It’s not something that I can, I think, spend all my time worrying about it,” he said. Asked why he thinks the misinformation about his religion persists, Obama said, “There is, a mechanism, a network of misinformation that in a new media era can get churned out there constantly.” He also addressed the birthers too, saying, “I can’t spend all my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead.” And he reiterated his support for the Islamic center being built near Ground Zero. “If you can build a church on that site,” he said, “if you can build a synagogue on that site or a Hindu temple on that site, then we can’t treat people of the Islamic faith differently, who are Americans. Who are American citizens. That is central to who we are.”

FEDS INVESTIGATE TENN. MOSQUE FIRE: The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are investigating a fire at the construction site of a Murfreesboro, Tennessee, mosque that has been the subject of many protests in the area. Four items of heavy construction equipment were covered with accelerant and one was set on fire. The feds are not yet officially calling it arson and are asking locals for tips. Essam Fathy, chairman of the mosque’s planning commission, was giving an interview to cable news when several people heard five or six gunshots.

IRAN: CARLA BRUNI A ‘PROSTITUTE’:  An Iranian state newspaper called French First Lady Carla Bruni a “prostitute” over the weekend after she signed a petition calling for the release of an Iranian woman accused of cheating on and murdering her husband. Iranian state television, meanwhile, accused Bruni of “immorality.” Bruni also penned an open letter to the imprisoned woman, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtina, last week. “Why shed your blood and deprive your children of their mother?” she wrote. “Because you have lived, because you have loved, because you’re a woman, and because you’re an Iranian? Everything within me refuses to accept this.”

LBN-HEALTH WATCH:   ***The number of people with diabetes mellitus in the US is increasing, as is the number facing diabetic retinopathy, a diabetes-related eye disorder. Nearly 30 percent of US diabetics over the age of 40 were found in a recent study to have diabetic retinopathy, and four percent were affected severely enough that their vision is threatened. The rate of patients affected with the disorder was nearly 40 percent higher than estimates dating back about two decades, while the rate of those with vision-threatening cases was more than two and a half times higher. It is unclear whether the new data indicate a rise in prevalence or simply improved diagnostic methods.

EIGHTEEN PEOPLE DIE PICKING MUSHROOMS: An early and prolific mushroom harvest in Italy has so far resulted in 18 deaths in 10 days. People have been flocking to Alpine valleys to collect mushrooms, but many of the fungi-cravers have lacked the proper footwear to navigate the woods and forests or have become trapped in adverse weather conditions, ultimately falling into rocky crevasses and gorges. “Lots of people go to areas which are easy to access, but there are always a few people who want to search out remote bits of woodland which no one else knows,” said Marco Biasoni, a mountain rescuer from Bolzano, in the north of the country. Seven people have died in the Lombardy region, while Piedmont, on the border with France, and Trentino-Alto Adige, adjacent to Austria, have also reported deaths. Most recently, a 65-year-old woman fell 40 meters down a steep rocky slope to her death in a forest near the Swiss border.
