LAST NIGHT, LBN READERS WIN: Last night Arizona Sen. John McCain claimed a significant victory in South Carolina’s Republican primary, coming out on top in the state where his first bid for the White House foundered in 2000. The 233,000 LBN E-Lert readers got the news BEFORE…..The New York Times or The Washington Post. Smart people want to be the first to know!

OVERSEAS INVESTORS BUY AGGRESSIVELY IN U.S.: Last May, a Saudi Arabian conglomerate bought a Massachusetts plastics maker. In November, a French company established a new factory in Adrian, Mich., adding 189 automotive jobs to an area accustomed to layoffs. In December, a British company bought a New Jersey maker of cough syrup. For much of the world, the United States is now on sale at discount prices. With credit tight, unemployment growing and worries mounting about a potential recession, American business and government leaders are courting foreign money to keep the economy growing. Foreign investors are buying aggressively, taking advantage of American duress and a weak dollar to snap up what many see as bargains, while making inroads to the world’s largest market.

GIULIANI ON ATTACK IN FLA.: Girding for battle as the rest of the GOP field descended upon Florida, Rudy Giuliani challenged them for the first time by name. “Do they agree that you should have a national catastrophic fund?” he said in a Saturday tour of the Everglades. “I support it–I was the first one to support it. Now let’s find out where the others–John McCain and Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson–let’s see what their position is on this.”

LBN-SNAP:…Jacqueline Bisset, the 63-year-old “Nip/Tuck” beauty resurfaced at a Beverly Hills art opening on Thursday…

LBN-MEDIA INSIDER:   ***American’s favorite television presenter is paying a painful price for her intervention in the US presidential campaign last month. Oprah Winfrey has been dubbed a “traitor” by some of her female fans for supporting Barack Obama instead of Hillary Clinton. Winfrey’s website, Oprah.com, has been flooded with a barrage of abuse since the queen of daytime chat shows joined Obama on a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina in mid-December.

MOBILE PHONE RADIATION WRECKS YOUR SLEEP: Radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion, according to a new study. The research, sponsored by the mobile phone companies themselves, shows that using the handsets before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them, interfering with the body’s ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

LBN-COMMENTARY BY JON VOIGHT: In Hollywood, just like in Washington, a lot of people talk. For Rudy Giuliani, talk is cheap. At the end of the day, results are what really matter. Rudy transformed New York City from the crime capital of America into the nation’s safest large city. Prior to Rudy, New York was the welfare capital of the country, but Rudy knew that it’s better to give people a hand up than a hand out. With his leadership, the city was able to reduce welfare rolls by 640,000. He cut taxes 23 times and cut unemployment in half. In a city of 8 million people, Rudy got the job done. Rudy will keep us on offense in the Terrorists’ War on Us. He is committed to a policy of victory in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rudy will end illegal immigration and secure our borders. He will send Congress the largest tax cut in American history to stimulate the economy and create new jobs. And he is the only candidate who can make health care more affordable for all Americans because he knows the solution lies in the free market. Rudy has the right strategy, the executive experience and the bold vision to win this race and lead America into the future.

LBN-COMMENTARY BY MAUREEN DOWD: When President Bush finished doing his sword dances and Arabian stallion inspections, when he finished making a speech in Abu Dhabi on the importance of freedom that fell flat, when he finished lounging in his fur-lined George of Arabia robe in the Saudi king’s tent, he came home. Or he came to what was left of home. A Washington Post cartoon by Tom Toles summed it up best: “Great to be home,” W. enthuses on Air Force One, heading toward the East Coast. “Anything interesting happen while I was gone?” Hanging on the skyline of New York is a sign reading: “U.S.A. Now a Wholly Owned Subsidiary of Foreign Investors.” Wherever he went, W. seemed dazzled by the can-do spirit of the J. Pierrepont Finches of the new Middle East. “It’s important for the president to hear thoughts, hopes, dreams, aspirations, concerns from folks that are out making a living,” he told Saudi entrepreneurs.

LBN-PRESIDENTIAL BACK ROOM:   ***New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who says he’s not running for president, chose delegate-rich California Saturday from which to deliver a scorching assessment of Washington for failing to keep up with the need for new airports, roads, water systems and bridges across America. While China and other nations are investing heavily in ports and high-speed trains, “Washington doesn’t have a plan” to address crumbling U.S. infrastructure, Bloomberg said.

LBN-NOTICED:   ***Dustin Hoffman and Jason Bateman cooing over newborn Zoë Giselle (Perrine) at Ivy on the Shore in Santa Monica while her proud parents, Best Life Editor-in-Chief Stephen and journalist Jennifer Wolff, looked on. Bateman’s advice to the happy couple? “Save your marriage - get TiVo and a night nurse”.    ***Javier Bardem with Penelope Cruz at the Tower Bar in LA while Sharon Stone dined with “La Vie En Rose” director Olivier Dahan.

LBN-COMMENTARY BY DOUG GILES: Barack Hussein Obama (or B-HO, as I like to call him) charismatically and emphatically denied reports this week that he is a closeted Muslim and instead declared candidly and with youthful verve that he believes in Jesus Christ. Brian Williams and Mark Cuban, both carrying parasols, were sitting in the crowd during that news conference, and it has been reported that when B-HO gave this statement regarding his faith that they let out a shriek, threw their panties at him, and then swooned. I think the video of Williams’ and Cuban’s show of affection is on YouTube. Check it out.

LBN-A DIFFERENT VIEW…..Freaky pacifier…..

LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Adrien Brody has never been accused of being a gentleman, but he took his cavalier act a little too far last week when he wordlessly walked away from his girlfriend at a party and left her wondering where he went. Brody was at the GM Style event in Detroit squiring his Versace-clad girlfriend, Elsa Pataky, around when he decided to bolt for no apparent reason. Our spy said, “He left through the back door of the tent and didn’t return. She didn’t know where he went.”   ***TV wife Suzanne Pleshette died at her home in Los Angeles last night at age 70, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Just last September, while undergoing treatment, she appeared at a 35th anniversary event celebrating “The Bob Newhart Show.” Suzanne was married in 2001 to “Newhart” actor Tom Poston, who died in 2007.

DID YOU KNOW?  ***7 million tons of textiles and clothing are thrown out annually. Out of this, only 12% is used again or recycled.  ***Early sewing machines were destroyed by mobs of workers who felt their jobs were threatened by automation.***More than $1 billion is spent each year on neckties in the United States.  ***Silk was developed in China where it was kept a secret for more than two thousands years. Anyone found trying to smuggle silkworm eggs or cocoons out of the country was immediately put to death.  ***Some silkworms can spin cocoons that contain more than two miles of silk.

LBN-QUOTE: “This is a phenomenon that could be called the growth of state capitalism as opposed to market capitalism. The United States has not ever been on the receiving end of this before.” –JEFFREY E. GARTEN of Yale School of Management, on the purchase of American companies by investment funds controlled by foreign governments.
